Gave me Plantar Fasciitis

These sadly did not work out for me. My Sky Toa's were starting to show some wear in the uppers so I decided to get a new pair of Hoka hiking boots. Unfortunately the Sky Toa's seem to be discontinued so I ordered the Otter/Black Anacapa's. Out of the box, they were pretty to look at and true to size. I tried them out on a 6 mile hike and nothing rubbed but I noticed some heel pain which is unusual for me when wearing Hoka's. There was also more than the usual amount of trail debris in the shoes and it you don't tie them just right, the eyelets rubbed on my ankles, but hey they are pretty! Unfortunately by the end of the second hike the pain in my right heel was really bad and I realized that I had plantar fasciitis which ironically I haven't had since I started wearing Hoka's. We were on a hiking vacation so that was not an ideal situation. I switched back to my Sky Toa's (and upped my mileage as I didn't have a choice) and the plantar fasciitis resolved itself. I'm not sure what in the design of the Anacapa's caused my feet to fall differently but having been sidelined in the past with Plantar Fasciitis I'm not going to risk it with these shoes. I'll stick with my Sky Toa's until they fall apart and hope that Hoka brings them back.

I bought the Anacapa Mid hiking boot to have a cushioned boot that doesn’t put pressure on my forefoot when laced. I have had bunion surgery on both of my narrow feet and my thick orthotics fit in these with room to spare. There aren’t any laces or pressure points to hit the screws in my feet, and even though I prefer a wide motion control shoe to have enough room for my orthotics & different socks (like the Hoka Arahi 6 in wide, or Brooks Ariel in wide), the Anacapa Mid has plenty of forefoot room and I don’t feel like I pronate.I wear an 8.5 Brooks Ariel, and I ordered the Hokas in a 9. This gives a thumb width at the end of the toe for when feet get hot.Although these boots have allowed me to hike for the first time in three years without being constantly ... MoreI bought the Anacapa Mid hiking boot to have a cushioned boot that doesn’t put pressure on my forefoot when laced. Some days I get it right & others I’m constantly adjusting. Also, I find wearing any socks other than knee socks seem to sneak down around the heel.I did buy the light blue, as it was the only color in stock that seemed wouldn’t clash with most things, but I’m not crazy about the blue.Lastly, I have had the Hoka Kaha boots in an 8.5 for three years and find the Anacapa to have a softer cushion (Kaha does not have the cushiony softness I was looking for at all) and more roomy forefoot - likely due to its thinner material (think sneaker vs boot) and lacing configuration.

LOVE all things HOKA... but these aren't durable
8 June 2022

I am a huge HOKA running shoe fan, so naturally I looked to their hiking boot for my week long hiking trip to Utah (day hikes). I took these boots through sand, down rock walls, through streams, you name it- my feet were comfortable and dry the entire time. I had minor pinching near my pinky toe where the shoe bends, but nothing that caused blisters etc. HOWEVER. I will say that these boots are not as durable as some of their competitors. The leather beneath the lace hook is already ripping/ becoming detached from the shoe- and this is after only 1 week of constant wear. For comparison, my fellow traveler wore a pair of competing brand's hiking boots through the exact same terrain on this trip- her boots look entirely unscathed, while mine are beginning to look like ... MoreI am a huge HOKA running shoe fan, so naturally I looked to their hiking boot for my week long hiking trip to Utah (day hikes). Yes, adding only that your $180+ investment may not last as long as it would had you invested in a competing brand's hiking boot. (Personally, I still love them... and may have to replace them sooner rather than later)*I am a 8.5 in hoka running shoes but sized up to 9 in these boots.

Nice alternative to a typical boot, but...
13 December 2022

I have been a postal worker for 22 years, and i have never been able to find the perfect winter boot. For the most part, they are comfortable (except for a slight ankle rub, even with socks and long underwear as a barrier). No blisters though, even after wearing them for the first time. They are very structured (no turning my ankle!), but it is a very tight fit to get on and off. The quality is very good, and the blue colour is lovely. The grip is also good, although i have not tried them on ice yet. The biggest problem for me, though, is they are not warm enough. As long as i am walking and moving around they are fine, but once i am standing in one spot for any period of time, my feet are cold. These would NOT be ideal for someone waiting for a bus or watching ... MoreI have been a postal worker for 22 years, and i have never been able to find the perfect winter boot. ORDER A HALF SIZE UP
17 December 2022

I'll start by saying that the reviews are correct; size up for a better fit. I'm a women's 7.5 usually and I ordered an 8. They fit perfect with a little extra room for socks if you know what I mean. These shoes would have been too small if I ordered my regular size.Everyone says Hokas are the most comfortable but I'm serious when I say these are like clouds straight out of the box.The toe box is slightly wider than average which makes for lots of room for toes and socks.Laces stay tied, tongue only digs into your ankle if you lace them super tight. My feet stayed put and did NOT slide forward in the shoe like some other reviews mentioned.I'll also say this, my feet are small and these shoes make my feet look MASSIVE ! Perfect for day hikes!
18 April 2023

I was looking for a day hiking shoe with more ankle support than my running sneakers but not as stiff/heavy as the clunky Asolo boots I wear backpacking. Enter the Anacapa!! They run small and narrow, especially if you plan to wear with hiking socks consider sizing up. I have narrow feet and liked how they hugged my arches so went tts. Overall these are exactly as advertised- theyre a really comfy sneaker with some boot-like features (namely the ~light~ ankle support). To me, these definitely feel like a sneaker first and are not a replacement for a true hiking boot. If you’re prone to foot/knee issues like me, they’re probably not suitable for backpacking bc they’re a little on the flimsy/soft side (or at least I prefer a stiffer boot to keep my floppy ankles in ... MoreI was looking for a day hiking shoe with more ankle support than my running sneakers but not as stiff/heavy as the clunky Asolo boots I wear backpacking. Runs Narrow, very sad about it.
10 March 2023

I could tell these would be the best hiking boots ever if they weren't so narrow!I have slightly wide feet (more high volume than wide), but I have never really "had" to buy wide shoes unless the shoe runs very narrow. This is definitely that shoe... they visually LOOK narrow. I wore them around the house for an hour or so and my feet went numb. I could feel the edges of the sole at the ball of my foot, and my foot definitely felt pinched. It's really important that I can spread the ball of my foot out during my 20-mile hikes otherwise my feet cramp up and my tendons aren't stretched out as they should be. There NEEDS to be a wide option for this hiking boot because otherwise, I LOVE IT. The toe box width was fine but just extremely narrow at the ball of the foot where the foot is typically the widest. The ankle support is amazing, I have never stepped into a boot that so perfectly supports my foot pronation. There were no edges digging in or weird pulling/tension in the boot with nearly ZERO give at all when I relax my foot. It's like the pronation never existed! They are super lightweight yet still feel durable and reliable. So if you have narrow feet, these are for you! Please make some wide options, or suggest a similar boot that may work for my high volume feet!

Wife and I both got Hoka Anacapa Mid, and here’s our take
2 July 2022

She got the womens in salmon color, I have the mens in blue. Here is what we love: roomy toe box, snug for everywhere else. Very light. Great grip. Works as a walking shoe and boot hybrid. Good waterproofing, works in light snow OR on a warm day hike. After hiking, the only part of my body that didn’t feel tired or sore was my feet. Same for my wife. Cushion is very, very plush BUT not sloppy. It rides the line between extreme cushion and too much very well. You don’t want to lose control which can happen if the cushion is overly ridiculous. I am not 100% loving the way it looks, but the performance is incredible for day hikes (short or long) in nearly any situation. These are the cushiony comfort that you'd expect from Hokas. No breaking in needed, and it felt like I was walking on a pillow of clouds. I have wide feet, and I stuck to my normal size and still felt comfortable, even as my feet swelled up. (I wear a 6.5 / 7 in Womens, and I got a size 7) I live in the Eastern Sierra and do a lot of hiking and backpacking, which is what I purchased this for. After just 100 miles of use on these shoes, they're already wearing out (as much as my Vasques did after about 300 miles). This included some scrambling up granite rocks, coming down shale fields, etc. There's a tear starting on the top toe-side, the bottom of the shoe is starting to separate on both shoes, and a small part of the bottom treading of one of the shoes is already ... MoreThese are the cushiony comfort that you'd expect from Hokas. These would work fine and hold up well if all you're doing is going on dirt trails. FYI - Hoka has a weak 1-year warranty, where you have to pay for return shipping and it's a 50/50 chance you'll get accepted for the warranty claim. They apparently just go through a checklist of things to see if your warranty is valid or not.
