I have a very high arch and a narrow foot...and I have searched for YEARS for a running shoe that works with both. Last year, I finally found it – in the HOKA Clifton 8!! I have never found a more perfect running shoe. The shoes even completely cleared up my plantar fasciitis that I had been suffering from for over four years! I've worn my Clifton 8s almost every day since purchasing them, and it was time to finally get some new ones. I can't find the 8 in my size anymore (size 8) as they've been discontinued to bring out the Clifton 9, so I went with the Clifton 9, expecting the same great shoe. Boy, am I disappointed! The arch support is WAY off. It's placed too far back so it is more on my heel than my arch (which will cause all sorts of injury). The arch support is WAY off. It's placed too far back so it is more on my heel than my arch (which will cause all sorts of injury). The toe box is now huge and way too roomy for my toe area. My foot flops around inside the box. The top of the shoe is longer now so it digs into the top part of my foot (where the shoe meets my low ankle). I'm so very sad about this because after years of searching for–and then finally finding–the perfect shoe, now it's gone.

The shoe line I have been wearing for over 10 years has been the Asics Gel Kayano. However, with my arthritic knee, I wanted to try a shoe with better cushioning. I tried on both the new Asics Gel Nimbus 25 and the Hoka Clifton 9. The Hoka's felt more cushiony than the Gel nimbus (walking around the store), so I decided to give them a try, knowing that I had 90-days to see how well this worked for me. They felt great just standing in the shoes, but even on short, 2-mile, flat walks during the next 60 days I could feel pain every time I stepped. I was concerned that the heel to toe drop of 4mm might be tough to adjust to, especially coming from shoes that have a 10mm drop. I don't know if that was the source of the discomfort, but the pain never subsided. I returned ... MoreThe shoe line I have been wearing for over 10 years has been the Asics Gel Kayano. I think if you don't have any knee issues and are used to shoes with a 4-5mm drop, that these would work better for you. The cushioning was certainly very attractive in this Hoka shoe. It just didn't work for my knees.

I am not a runner. I only do occasional sprinting jogs but usually do past fitness walks. I am still searching for shoes that work best for me to avoid sore and achy feet/soles after lots of daily walking. As noted, loved the cushioning in the soles (felt like walking on pillows) but the Cliftons were too bulky for me. Can't the upper be reduced to eliminate weight? I don't know about other people, but I'm not looking for my foot to be encased in cushion, just looking for plenty of cushion under foot. I'd prefer minimal material for the upper part of the shoe. I returned these because although I loved the cushion I was not completely happy with them. I experienced a sprain injury to my 2nd toe while I was testing these out too. Iam a nurse who works 12 hour shifts and needed a comfortable and supportive shoe. Purchased pair clifton 9 two weeks ago. They have decent support which helped bottom of foot. However they are not soft and comfortable. They are very stiff and let me tell you they run small and narrow and purchased half soze larger than I normally wear. Typically shoes are big on my heel and upper foot but I need length. If your feet are wide at all these would not be for you. The shoes are rubbing too much against ankle and too of foot. Plus the toe is somewhat pointed leaving little room in the toe box. I am disappointed because I hear of many people who love their hokas. My husband too he wears the clufton 8. So clifton 9 was a mistake
I needed a new pair of walking shoes for the paved walking/bike trail in our town and the gym. I've had HOKAS recommended by several friends but didn't want to commit to the price point. REI was having a sale on these also I was able to use my member points to purchase my shoes so it wasn't such a painful price point. I've been wearing them about a week now and love them! They feel like walking on a cloud. I don't have to worry about sore arches after a long walk. I don't run so I can't speak to the comfort of running in them, but I could imagine that activity would also feel comfortable as well. The toe box is nice and roomie for my long toes, the arch is supportive of my high arches. Today I wore them to weight train legs. So far I'm pleased with their comfort and performance.
I’ll start this review with sizing. Other reviewers stated that the Clifton 9 was larger than the Clifton 8, so I was skeptical ordering my typical size. My typical size ended up working out and felt about the same as my Clifton 8. The toe box feels a bit more roomy in the Clifton 9, which is why I think some are saying to size down. I think you could be safe going TTS or a half size down, but I wouldn’t size down more than that. Comfort wise, these are definitely not as comfortable as the Clifton 8, but still much more comfy than other running shoe brands. I have relatively high arches and still feel good support from the shoe.I ended up opting for the Pale Mauve and Shifting Sand and am in love with the colors in person. I was super skeptical about getting these shoes at first. I work in healthcare and everyone raves about them but was still just weary about getting them and not liking them. The only mistake I’ve made was not getting them sooner! I am able to work an entire shift without the pains and aches I would get before with any other shoe. I suffer from chronic ankle pain and that seems to be resolved when I wear these shoes. I walked a 20,000+ step day at Disneyland and didn’t have one complain all day, on top of that didn’t get the usual blisters on my feet that I get from having a 12+ hour day. Bite the bullet and get the shoes!! They fit true to size but I could’ve probably sized down half a size for a snugger fit. I wear a size 8 for reference. I would order your normal ... MoreI was super skeptical about getting these shoes at first. I just bought a pair of these in the black/copper size 7 for my Mother’s birthday via Dicks, I received the shoes today and was impressed with the shipping and delivery time since I had just ordered them a few days ago on the 9th. Well… I opened the box to find used shoes with rocks stuck in the bottom soles and scuff/dirt marks on various areas of the foam. After paying $145 I am very disappointed and expected shoes that were actually new and in perfect condition. Yes, I talked to a representative online and they told me I could get a refund or do an exchange at a nearby store, but these are not in stock anywhere around me within 100 miles and my mother’s birthday is tomorrow. Nor would I want to risk having to order them again online without seeing them in person ... MoreI just bought a pair of these in the black/copper size 7 for my Mother’s birthday via Dicks, I received the shoes today and was impressed with the shipping and delivery time since I had just ordered them a few days ago on the 9th. Nor would I want to risk having to order them again online without seeing them in person to check the shoes condition. These should have never even been sent out, it is one thing to sell them in store where a customer is able to see with their own eyes the wear and tear on the sneakers, but to sell them to someone who ordered these shoes online and did not know the exact product they were getting is not acceptable. I have worked in retail myself and items like this should either be discounted or damaged out if severely damaged. Though not severely damaged, these shoes were not what I was expecting to gift to my mom. She was very excited to know I was getting her a pair for her birthday, as she works at a podiatrist’s office and has heard how great these sneakers are. We are both very dissatisfied with the quality of the product we received, and it’s sad that doing a return would just be more of a hassle for this particular situation and we will need to suck it up.
