A small step up is always nice

Honestly I felt underwhelmed when seeing the mach 5 for the first time. I've been running in the mach 4's for about 8 months now and totally loved it. Couldn't imagine the shoe getting much better than the 4, except for possibly a grippier outsole on the bottom that holds up better to high mileage or trails, but it is a quick road shoe so what can you complain about. The profly+ foam added on a nice step up in cushion to the shoe, and it responded a little more snappy than the 4. A little stiffer of a rocker launches and responds to power, and leaves the shoe with a great overall feeling. They also changed the tongue to my liking, and made it more form fitting. Nice and light shoes. They are slightly bulky especially towards the heel but they are Hoka's. Great for training and daily runners. Wide is great even tough I don't use wide. But I recommend them for a better base and toes should splay out. Laces are thin but work great and are comfortable. Tongue is also thin but also comfortable and no issues while running. Not sure how I feel about the rubberized EVA. I have another pair who the EVA outer soul. The traction is not as good as the other Hoka's shoes but I only buy trail shoes. The EVA seems to slip on wet smooth surfaces and wear out faster than other outer souls. Still recommend them. Great for walkers.

Comfort, Spring, and Durable
22 September 2022

I personally have been critical of Hokas shoes in the past. I didn't like the overall stability of the models I had previously tried. I also did not like the soft feel of their daily trainers. On top of that, I'm a big fan of the Saucony Endorphin series and did not want to switch. All that said, while searching for new Endorphins, there were no stores that had those shoes in my size, so I was talked into trying the Mach 5s. From the moment I put them on, I fell in love. My first run was very light and slow just to feel them out and I was shocked at the stability, weight, and comfort. Since then, I've increased my distance and added some tempo in to my training runs. These shoes did NOT disappoint! I'm a firm believer and can't wait to keep running in them. Great shoe!

Excellent Running Shoe!
19 August 2022

As a triathlete, I run variety of distances during the week and at different times during the trading cycle. Sometimes it's a stand alone 3-6 miler, or 3-6+ right off the bike, or simply a long run day 10-12 miles. Like many athletes, once you find gear that works and you tend to stick with it. For me, I tend like flat (not minimalist) trainers without a lot of cushion and action going on under my foot, so I've been using a low profile shoe for quite some time, and no issues or injuries. However, as a 6'0" - 190 lbs. guy, I just kept thinking "I may need a little more shoe under me, especially for the longer runs." I tried several brands, some of which I've used in the past with some success, and also tried the Hoka Mach 5. I tried several brands, some of which I've used in the past with some success, and also tried the Hoka Mach 5. Many of these brands, including Hoka have big/thick soles a "rocker" effect. I felt like I was falling forward over the toes of the shoes. Perhaps that's the idea, and I simply don't get it, but it was an awkward feeling for me. The Mach 5 has a larger (and squishier) sole/feel than I am used too, but not the "rocker" feeling. So, I decided to give them a try. And rather than a couple of runs on the treadmill, I decided to commit and just started running outside with them. (No return). I must say that after a few runs I got used to feel and now I really enjoy the shoes/ride very much. I've raced triathlon in them recently, and have another IM 70.3 coming up in September, and I'm looking forward wearing my new Mach 5's for the 13.1 run. Thanks Hoka for producing this product, and making it easy to access them. Cheers!

Favorite shoe with 1 caveat

Easily the best shoe that I've ever run in for my mechanics, particularly for faster paced efforts. I have flat feet so use these in conjunction with the Currex runpro low profile arches (the large fits perfectly in the size 10.5 regular width shoe) to get even more support in the midfoot. Incredibly comfortable right out of the box and settle in nicely after the first 10-15 miles or so in terms of the balance between squish/responsiveness of the foam. My only issue with them is that as a 170lb runner, they die out pretty quickly for how much they cost. I am on my second pair and the first pair started giving me issues shortly after 200-215 miles or so. Despite this issue, I will continue to buy these because I havent found another shoe that feels as good under my ... MoreEasily the best shoe that I've ever run in for my mechanics, particularly for faster paced efforts. Also, i struggled with the narrow toe box of the mach 4, but the wider toe box in the mach 5 worked great for me.

GREAT daily trainer for me
7 January 2023

I recently switched to Hoka because I wanted a lower heel drop and frankly I wanted to see what all the fuss was all about. I started my Hoka journey conservatively with the Clifton 8 initially. While I liked how soft the shoe was, it was too squishy and lacked any real energy return, especially on my tempo or interval days. That being said I liked them for my long, slow runs. After reading the rave reviews for the Mach 4 I purchased the Mach 5. I received them yesterday and immediately strapped them on today for an 8 mile tempo run. All I can is WOW! These shoes are exactly what I was looking for in a daily trainer or even race day shoe. I was little worried when I first put them on because it felt very soft, especially in the heel. However, once I started running these shoes felt great with the right amount of softness and energy return. I actually found myself running about 30 seconds faster than my target pace in these shoes. For me, these are the ideal non-plated speed/daily trainer/race day shoe.

Most Comfortable Shoe (maybe ever)
25 February 2023

I honestly believe this is all because of the Pro Fly midsole in this shoe and hope they never change this. I do think this is one of the most comfortable shoes ever! My first purchase from Hoka consists of this shoe, but I did try 6 other Hoka shoes in a store. This shoe has the best squishy, bounce back feel under your foot that causes an energetic step. Instead of just cushion and energy dispersement, it pushes back up against your foot unlike anything else I have ever felt. The upper is thin, breathable, and hugs the foot perfectly in the right places. I took my wife shoe shopping a week later and after 8 shoes, she also chose the Mach 5. We only wore Brooks for the last few years. For a nurse working 12+ hour shifts this seems to be an exciting experience on ... MoreI honestly believe this is all because of the Pro Fly midsole in this shoe and hope they never change this. They accommodate my needs as well as I can find

I have short, wide feet. I over pronate. My lower legs have a slight twist which makes my feet point about 20 degrees outward naturally, and due to a career in ballet, bone spurring on both big toes have greatly limited my flexibility and pushoff. I used to wear ASICS, but I've found that HOKA work far better for me. The early stage rocker relieves almost all the pain I used to endure because of my limited flexibility with my big toes. That's taking me a little getting used to. I've been playing around with adjusting my stride. With these shoes I prefer to land more toward the balls of my feet. By comparison, The Clfiftons I wore previously, I landed midfoot. I've also had to adjust my natural turnout. As I said, my feet naturally rotate outward, but i have quite a bit of room to adjust just how much I choose to rotate - a benefit of all those years of ballet. Doing so has helped me relieve knee pain. Over the years, I've had physical therapists and doctors tell me that I won't be able to keep running. But I have two great PTs now who are very good at analyzing my running style and correcting me as I need, including helping me choose the correct shoes. They both agree that the HOKAs are a good choice for me.

I ran 5.5 yesterday and I was shocked how unresponsive these were. I'm not sure if I need to break them in more or if they are defective but there is zero energy return and the shoe forces you to land on the middle of you foot. And as someone who likes to land on the forefront of my stride I was really struggling. My ankles and knees were worn down by the end of my run which is something that I never struggle with. I plan on returning them and getting the peg 40s with that credit. Again, these shoes 100% could've been defective because I felt as if I was running with no shoes on and the foam was almost requiring me to exert more energy opposed to helping me with my run and supporting my joints. I'm not sure if anyone has recommendations or if I should give another Hoka shoe a chance.
