My size 10.5. but all the Mafates I own and the new ones only fit me with size 11.As a side note, I just did two runs in the Altra Olympus 4. They looked cool, had some neat sounding tech but were a real disappointment for me and confirmed after years of running with Hoka One One, there's no shoe yet to take their place on my feet! The Altras are going back tomorrow!

The first miles (warm-up) was down the entrance into the park, a large gravel road. In true to Hoka form, the cushion made the large gravel seem nonexistent. Once on trail, I immediately went straight to undulating and challenging paths. I'm prone to rolling my ankles due to Supination and wearing a high stack shoe often compounds the effect. In my last shoe test, I had a couple occurrences that concerned me but with the Mafate Speed 2, not only does this shoe control that issue, it had my laughing a bit as I run when I noticed that the forefoot platform actually helped assist in correcting the issue! I had so much fun on this test run that I had to cox myself into stopping at 10 miles! < 3

As expected-- game & life changing functionality.

Best trail running shoe I have used
7 July 2020

Excellent all around shoe. I typically run 40-60 miles per week on all terrain from smooth road to knobby technical trails. I find the shoes comfortable, responsive, and supportive in all environments. I'm a 6 foot 170 pound runner and find these are perfect for me at all times. I'm currently on my 4th pair of Mafate Speed 2s and typically get ~600 miles out of a pair before retiring them for good. They hold up well and are comfortable with sweat and rain (where I live it rains 300 days per year), and have performed well in races from marathons to 100 miler trail races. Further they look great and I get tons of compliments on the shoes-which is kind of a novel experience. In summary I love these shoes. Mafate Speed 2 Mens CUSHIONED Trail Running Shoes

I'd had the Mafate on my wish list after reading some positive reviews and, when my Hoka Challengers fell apart just days before a trail race, I knew exactly what I was after and Northern Runner had the best price albeit in a slightly odd colourway. I ended up running the race pretty much out of the box and got away with it, although unsurprisingly I had a few hot spots around my toes and they do seem to need a little breaking in. As for the design, it looks absolutely fine in the flesh and is very practical. The shoes are heavier than my Challengers (332g vs 286g for a UK 9½) and the cushioning is firmer than other Hokas I've had. That said, I'm mostly going to be training off road in these so that's fine. That said, I'm mostly going to be training off road in these so that's fine. Grip is provided by 5mm Vibram rubber lugs; like many runners I have some road to negotiate to get to the trails, but the cushioning and the type of rubber combine to make that reasonably comfortable if not quite as smooth as a dedicated road shoe. Hokas are famous for having a narrow toe box and I do struggle with certain brands for that reason. These are a bit broader and will suit a wider range of runners. There is a firm heel counter that is well padded inside and I had no problems with slippage. Also, a small loop at the back to help with removal - a welcome aid after a hard, muddy run no doubt! The uppers of my Hoka Challenger ATRs ultimately shredded, albeit after a good many miles; the Mafate seems to be far more robust with what seems to be a plasticised covering over potential contact points leaving bare mesh over the toes for breathability. The tongue is thin but gusseted to keep out debris. The laces are flat and some reviewers have had issues keeping them tied; however they are identical to my previous Hokas and I simply tuck the ends down and through the lacing on the front of the shoe and they don't shift. It also reduces the likelihood of a loop of lace catching on undergrowth. My first proper run was a 10km trail race on hard baked and rutted trails, a bit of tarmac, some grass and with three streams to cross. They felt stable on the uneven terrain and coped with the rest well enough but didn't feel as responsive at race pace as my old shoes because of the extra weight and slightly dead feel. Since then we've had nearly a week of rain, whilst not enough for serious mud, it has given me a chance to try them on different surfaces. On soft ground, the 5mm lugs bite well and I never had any qualms when descending fast over a mix of mud, wet pebbles and tree roots. When walking yesterday in my Salomon hiking boots (which also have Vibram soles), I had no grip on wet tree roots; not so the Mafate which means that you can run faster with far more confidence.Whilst I've only done a few runs in the Hoka Mafate Speed 2 so far, these seem to be a good purchase. First and foremost, the outsole is phenomenal and can cope with pretty much anything on or off the trail. The broader fit is welcome and the construction looks like it will cope with a bit of rough treatment. If you want a responsive shoe for shorter trail races, then these are possibly not the right product, but for longer runs and races they're a great buy, especially at this price.

Pretty Good So Far

Hit 200 miles in these today and figured I'd give my 2 cents. First pair of HOKAs. I mostly run 10ks on rough, rocky, rooty, technical trails in the Northeast USA as my everyday runs, with longer (25k+) weekend runs on similar terrain. PROS: Super comfortable. I have a wide-ish forefoot and these were fine for me, although I did size up .5 US from my regular casual shoes. Cushioning is awesome over rough terrain while still being sensitive enough so you can feel what's going on underfoot. Lugs are super grippy on every surface I've encountered. Upper is light yet the material is very tough and breathable. CONS: As others have mentioned, there can be a lace-bite issue. Mine occurred on my inside left foot, lower two / three eyelets. The eyelets would dig into the top of my foot causing a pretty annoying pain, especially on descents. I initially thought it was a design flaw in the tongue being too narrow. Upon further investigation it turned out the tongue was actually folded over itself and creased in that fashion. Once i discovered this I began to be deliberate about unfolding the tongue as I put my foot in the shoe. This has completely fixed the problem but it is slightly annoying to have to be so careful about putting the shoe on. A minor thing, really. Durability-wise, the toe rubber on the left shoe is just starting to delaminate. Otherwise everything has held up just fine. Hoping to get at least another 200 out of them.Nice to find a pair of shoes I like that do what they are supposed to do and fit me in the process. Cool colors to choose from too. Will definitely be picking up a second pair.

Probably the best shoes I've ever had
3 February 2021

My first pair of Hoka's. After years of running with Asics, Mizuno, Saucony, Salomon and much more I decided to give Hoka a try. Why so late? I've never been a fan of the Hoka design. The shoes look like orthopedic shoes and seemed to be heavy. But how wrong have I been? As from the first kilometers I felt how natural they run. Their shock absorption is just .. amazing and one of the main reasons I wanted to try this brand. I can run longer runs again without injuries and although these are not the lightest shoes, I run about 15 to 20" less per kilometer so my speed increased. I'm more than convinced and this might be my first pair of Hoka's, it will certainly not be my last pair...

The Lace Grommets are Painful - Returned the Shoes
5 September 2020

I wore these out for a 10-mile trail run to break them in, and at the end my foot had been torn up from the shoelace grommets. The tongue is situated between your foot and the grommet, but the shoe is such a tight fit it doesn't matter. I gave them a week off and went to try them again, but had to stop mid-run and change into another pair of shoes. I've decided to return these and will try a different pair of Hokas that don't have these grommets in them. Can't believe they thought these were a good idea - hard pointed metal on the inside of the shoe where people's feet are going to rub.I will say, I did give it A singular star because other than the extreme pain from the grommets, they did feel good at really ripping into the trail, providing strong traction both ... MoreI wore these out for a 10-mile trail run to break them in, and at the end my foot had been torn up from the shoelace grommets. This is my favorite trail shoe!
23 July 2017

I have no history with this shoe but I do own ATR3, Speedgoat 2, and now the Mafate Speed 2s. I love my new Speedgoats and have total confidence in them but as you may have heard they are really tight in the toe box. I was looking for a shoe with more toe splay while maintaining good mid foot fit and stability. I also wanted deeper cleats due to the heavy snow still in the high Sierra where I like to go.This is it.I have a low to medium arch, and low volume foot. It's a tad loose for me but if you are a D width or greater and medium volume, this is your shoe.Great ground feel. Really sticky sole on granite rocks (I did a scramble straight up a hill that was really challenging) super comfortable right out of the box. Love them!

Works for me...
13 September 2020

I fast hike and trail run a few times a week in Phoenix, AZ. Running downhill is what gives me pleasure, and I mean running not jogging. I haven't tried the TenNine yet, because Mafate Speed 2 serves me well for this purpose. Actually so well that I have a cache of 10 new pairs waiting patiently for their turn. Yep, I like them that much. Not cheap, but they seem to last much longer than the regular Hoka shoe despite the really abrasive rocks of Phoenix mountains. Vibram soles make a difference when it comes to running downhill, they have a very good grip. I also like Carbon X for running uphill, however I prefer running downhill in Mafate Speed 2. Ideally I'd like to go uphill in Carbon X, then attach securely the Mafate Speed soles to the Carbon X and fly downhill. Maybe Deckers will come up with a solution...
