Due to Hoka's 30/60 day policy, I ordered and ran extensively in all 3 newer Mafate's. The Evo, the Evo Mafate 2 and the Mafate Speed. I thought the Speed had almost everything! Laces with grommets which should be on all shoes for fast n ez lacing, great grip, decent weight for a large comfort oriented shoe made to take on technical trails. A great upper and overall comfort with zero blisters, aches etc. I am 72 and run 3-5 miles almost every day. I have 2 runs, a steep uphill, very rocky, dry and exposed and an easier but varied lake roundabout with soft earth, redwood trees, brush roots and ups n downs plus a few creeks to cross when water is low!I have a weak back and need the plushest shoe to do my thing. When I used my old inserts in the Mafate Speed 2, they worked a lot better. My size 10.5. but all the Mafates I own and the new ones only fit me with size 11.As a side note, I just did two runs in the Altra Olympus 4. They looked cool, had some neat sounding tech but were a real disappointment for me and confirmed after years of running with Hoka One One, there's no shoe yet to take their place on my feet! The Altras are going back tomorrow!

My only issue was the smaller toe box. I will not shoot down this shoe, because everything else about it is perfect and other people seem to like it. Maybe it just did not work for me and that is okay.DETAILED REVIEW: Why is this review not zero stars if I decided to return the product? Well there is some nuance about the Mafate Speed 2 that I will discuss here.Pros:1. The "true white" color is beautiful. I hope Hoka decides to transition to this true white color, instead of using the "faded lavender" looking kind of white that you may find on their Bondi model.2. ... MoreBACKGROUND: I ran on the Mafate Speed 2 for about a week in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range and put down 50 miles on it.BREVITY REVIEW: I did not like the Mafate Speed 2, but I really wish I did. I have heel pain and I don't need to change special inserts for this issue. I am comfortable using this pair. However, need a whole day of usage to stretch the width. It wasn't painful but a tiny bit tight on my right midsole. After that it's all good. This pair has some reflector strip. Btw, this colorway is stylish and cool.

I'd had the Mafate on my wish list after reading some positive reviews and, when my Hoka Challengers fell apart just days before a trail race, I knew exactly what I was after and Northern Runner had the best price albeit in a slightly odd colourway. I ended up running the race pretty much out of the box and got away with it, although unsurprisingly I had a few hot spots around my toes and they do seem to need a little breaking in. As for the design, it looks absolutely fine in the flesh and is very practical. The shoes are heavier than my Challengers (332g vs 286g for a UK 9½) and the cushioning is firmer than other Hokas I've had. That said, I'm mostly going to be training off road in these so that's fine. That said, I'm mostly going to be training off road in these so that's fine. Grip is provided by 5mm Vibram rubber lugs; like many runners I have some road to negotiate to get to the trails, but the cushioning and the type of rubber combine to make that reasonably comfortable if not quite as smooth as a dedicated road shoe. Hokas are famous for having a narrow toe box and I do struggle with certain brands for that reason. These are a bit broader and will suit a wider range of runners. There is a firm heel counter that is well padded inside and I had no problems with slippage. Also, a small loop at the back to help with removal - a welcome aid after a hard, muddy run no doubt! The uppers of my Hoka Challenger ATRs ultimately shredded, albeit after a good many miles; the Mafate seems to be far more robust with what seems to be a plasticised covering over potential contact points leaving bare mesh over the toes for breathability. The tongue is thin but gusseted to keep out debris. The laces are flat and some reviewers have had issues keeping them tied; however they are identical to my previous Hokas and I simply tuck the ends down and through the lacing on the front of the shoe and they don't shift. It also reduces the likelihood of a loop of lace catching on undergrowth. My first proper run was a 10km trail race on hard baked and rutted trails, a bit of tarmac, some grass and with three streams to cross. They felt stable on the uneven terrain and coped with the rest well enough but didn't feel as responsive at race pace as my old shoes because of the extra weight and slightly dead feel. Since then we've had nearly a week of rain, whilst not enough for serious mud, it has given me a chance to try them on different surfaces. On soft ground, the 5mm lugs bite well and I never had any qualms when descending fast over a mix of mud, wet pebbles and tree roots. When walking yesterday in my Salomon hiking boots (which also have Vibram soles), I had no grip on wet tree roots; not so the Mafate which means that you can run faster with far more confidence.Whilst I've only done a few runs in the Hoka Mafate Speed 2 so far, these seem to be a good purchase. First and foremost, the outsole is phenomenal and can cope with pretty much anything on or off the trail. The broader fit is welcome and the construction looks like it will cope with a bit of rough treatment. If you want a responsive shoe for shorter trail races, then these are possibly not the right product, but for longer runs and races they're a great buy, especially at this price.
I primarily use these in the gym (stairmill, elliptical, treadmill, HIIT). I started with Cliftons and Bondis, and while the comfort was there, I did not like the look of either. I decided to try the Mafate 2's after seeing my sister's gorgeous pair. I had no idea that trail running shoes would work just fine, if not better, in the gym. I absolutely LOVE these. I now have them in all but one color. Not only is this the first shoe that hasn't required my custom orthotics for plantar fasciitis, but it is also the most comfortable and most gorgeous shoe I've owned. I ended up buying a few speed 4s. While they are equally comfortable and supportive, they are not nearly as cute as the 2s. Please keep making these! They are so uniquely gorgeous. ****True to size is true ... MoreI primarily use these in the gym (stairmill, elliptical, treadmill, HIIT). Hit 200 miles in these today and figured I'd give my 2 cents. First pair of HOKAs. I mostly run 10ks on rough, rocky, rooty, technical trails in the Northeast USA as my everyday runs, with longer (25k+) weekend runs on similar terrain. PROS: Super comfortable. I have a wide-ish forefoot and these were fine for me, although I did size up .5 US from my regular casual shoes. Cushioning is awesome over rough terrain while still being sensitive enough so you can feel what's going on underfoot. Lugs are super grippy on every surface I've encountered. Upper is light yet the material is very tough and breathable. CONS: As others have mentioned, there can be a lace-bite issue. Mine occurred on my inside left foot, lower two / three eyelets. Upper is light yet the material is very tough and breathable. CONS: As others have mentioned, there can be a lace-bite issue. Mine occurred on my inside left foot, lower two / three eyelets. The eyelets would dig into the top of my foot causing a pretty annoying pain, especially on descents. I initially thought it was a design flaw in the tongue being too narrow. Upon further investigation it turned out the tongue was actually folded over itself and creased in that fashion. Once i discovered this I began to be deliberate about unfolding the tongue as I put my foot in the shoe. This has completely fixed the problem but it is slightly annoying to have to be so careful about putting the shoe on. A minor thing, really. Durability-wise, the toe rubber on the left shoe is just starting to delaminate. Otherwise everything has held up just fine. Hoping to get at least another 200 out of them.Nice to find a pair of shoes I like that do what they are supposed to do and fit me in the process. Cool colors to choose from too. Will definitely be picking up a second pair.
Wonderful shoe. Great grip and well made. Future wish would be for these to be GTX or more water repellant. The color of the shoe changes when damp and seeps water in pretty easily. Definitely not a performance shoe for that reason only. I give 4 stars because of the colors and aesthetic mostly as well as the traction. Otherwise- I would recommend taking a half size up from your normal Hoka shoe and do not buy if you have wider feet. Definitely not disappointed with this pair but there is lots of room for improvement, especially at this price point.
I really wanted to love these because of the color. What a beautiful neutral with just a pop of fun! I thought that being "all gender" would mean decent width, but these were just weirdly narrow and long. I'm almost always a women's 7, very rarely a 7.5, and have feet that are medium width bordering on wide with medium arches and a slightly high instep. I ordered these in M6/W7 and returned them for the width issue. Sizing up for width wasn't an option because they'd be uncomfortably long. For reference, the Speedgoat mid in size 7 is my go-to speed hiker (2 pairs now), and after this disappointing experience I raced to my computer and bought a backup pair of those in case they stop making them.
I have worn the Bondi, Stinson, Clifton, Rincon, and the Mafate (all of these in various versions) and these Mafate Speed 2 definitely work best for me for outdoor walks/runs. I have continued to get calluses on the outside of my big toes with Hoka's. I have never had this problem with any other brand of running shoes, but I think I finally figured out that it is because there is too much toe room (something I never thought I'd complain about, as I like to wiggle my toes and have slightly wide feet). These are wide enough, but not so wide like many of the others are. The traction on these is great too, which keeps me sure-footed (important, as I'm klutzy). These seem to last longer for me than many of the other models, so hopefully they will keep my feet comfy and moving for a very long time.
