The Spedgoat 3, 4, and now 5, are my go to day hiking shoes. I hike in woods 5-6 days week, not long, 4-7 miles say. As I carry no heavy loads, am out for the exercise and birding Speedgoats work great. I prefer the GTX versions as I bird near water and occasionally get in the wet stuff. Not sure the 5, (new to me) is an improvement over the 4. Seems "girthier". I have skinny feet so am concerned I may have to go through figuring out what to stuff in these to make the fit optimum. Lacing system doesn't seem as tough. Hopefully the 5 will not delaminate some of th Vibram sole components as my last 4 has. That said lugs work supremely well. These not great for pavement, trippy, but awesome in the woods.

My Wife and I bought these sneakers as we were planning a trip to hike in the Grand Canyon. I got the SpeedGoat 5 GTX in Black and she wanted something a little more fashionable so she got the Torrent 3 in Grey/green. We hiked Bright Angel Trail on Saturday, going all the way down to the Gardens and then back up. It was over 9 miles and 3,000 feet in elevation! We were like Zombies the last mile back up, but we made it! Both sneakers gripped the dusty rocks like we had octopus on our feet. Not to mention the super cushioning and bounce to our step. My wife has a Vertigo and a fear of heights so there were some sections where she hugged the edge of the canyon. But without the comfort of knowing her shoes weren't going to slide and lose her grip, she was confident in ... MoreMy Wife and I bought these sneakers as we were planning a trip to hike in the Grand Canyon. She had to mention at least 20 times how great the sneakers gripped the trail. We hiked in Sedona the next day (more casual, less stressful) but again after 25,000+ steps and amazing views (Devils Bridge/Birthing cave) our feet felt refreshed...our calves, not so much !! These Hoka's are definitely the required gear for the trails....(and we saw many others on folks we passed along the way) Well Done Hoka Family!!

I have been trying to make these shoes work with different insoles. I had my feet scanned at a running store and bought the recommended insoles. I notice blister pain in my arches around halfway though a 3 mile run. I have two other pairs of shoes and they don't hurt my feet in this way. Today I ran 4 miles with the original insoles that came with the shoe and the pain was slightly worse. I'm gonna go out and buy one more set of insoles and if that doesn't work I'm gonna return these shoes. Horrible shoes for running. Also the color is not at all how it appears in the pictures. It shows red but the shoes are coral in real life.

I bought these at Eastern Mountain Sports 2 months ago after going through 2 pairs of Hoka Speedgoat 4's over the past few years hiking in New Hampshire. I loved the 4's so much, I didn't hesitate to buy the new model 5. What a disappointment. Please, please, please bring back the 4! The water-proofing membrane on these 5's is akin to wearing a colander on your feet. The 4's waterproof membrane lasted for at least a year and half. The other unfortunate problem with the model 5 I bought is how awful they smell and retain that smell after use. My 4's never smelled like these. My family walking by them when they are on the ground even comment on the stench. Please bring back the 4!
I've never been a big fan of waterproof trail runners. Sure, they keep moisture out, but they also keep moisture in, and can lead to hot, soggy, uncomfortable feet. During shoulder season, though, the temptation always grew. Plunging into a patch of snow at the beginning of a hike/run and having cold, wet feet for the remainder of the day is pretty miserable. My typical trail runners don't come in a waterproof option, so I decided to give these a shot, and I am glad I did. These are lightweight, have great traction, and do not cause excessive sweating for my (typically warm) feet. I find that they are particularly great on the downhills--the cushioning is great without removing the ability to feel and negotiate technical trails. I'm a frequent ankle-roller, and even with the larger (than I am used to) stack height, they remain quite stable. I frequently pair these with Exo Spikes when things get icy and really love the combo. Both have helped to push my trail runningseason later into the fall and earlier into the spring.I haven't tried the non-GTX version of Speedgoats, so I can't compare the two, but I've been impressed to the point that I will probably pick up a pair this summer.
If you owned the original Speed Goat, you'll immediately notice that heel cup is completely different. I'm wearing a pair of the Original Speed Goats in black with gold trim as I write this review, and heel cup is much better than the new ones that I purchased. New model heel counter goes straight vertically from the sole and never actually forms a heel cup. There's really no comparison. The heel cup on the new ones pretty much does not exist. My older Speed Goats fit the whole foot front to back, with a great heel cup feel, the new ones just fit snug around the forefoot, no heel cup at all. I DON'T expect HOKA to redesign this shoe, because that would be admitting that they made a mistake. If you've been buying HOKAS for a few years, then you'll notice that their design is changing on many of their models to what I can only describe as a heel stop, unlike past years where there was actually a cup. If this design is what HOKA is moving to, then after years of buying literally dozens of pairs of HOKA, then I'm done with HOKA, I won't be buying anymore.
I love the ORIGINAL Speedgoat 5 - that was the shoe that convinced me to change from another shoe I've been wearing the past 15 years for hiking, walking, adventuring, working, etc. and after walking 50 miles in a week with a heavy backpack in Glacier NP. I'm a believer. I bought the Speedgoat 5 GTX shoe this week in "all black" because I need an all black shoe for work, the gortex is a plus. However, these are not the same shoes as the original speedgoat 5 shoes. They don't feel as comfortable, the back heel sits up a little higher than the front, feels real blocky, and my ankle area sticks out of the shoe more, meaning it doesn't fit INTO the shoe like the original. I can already tell I'm going to have blisters hiking by the way it rubs. I can already tell I'm going to have blisters hiking by the way it rubs. Would you please make a Speedgoat 5 shoe GTX without changing how the foot fits into the shoe, like the original? Make the exact same Speedgoat 5 shoe in GTX. It's such a successful shoe. Why would you change how it fits? Merrell has been successful with a certain shoe, they've basically sold the same shoe for the last 15 years and every year I would buy a few pairs, but the Speedgoat 5 changed converted me over to you. Also, you have 11 colors to choose from in the original Speedgoat 5, but NONE of them are in all black? Why? You only have an all black shoe for the GTX and it doesn't even fit the same. I love Hokas and have 4 pairs at home I bought in the last year, 2 solimar white for all around walking (very comfortable for everyday use), and 2 speedgoat 5 shoes. The GTX is a let down, but hopefully you can make an all black shoe in an original Speedgoat 5 and also a GTX speedgoat 5 that fits the same as the original. I would buy at least 2 per year for another 15 years. Hoka has something good going, and hopefully they can update this issue.
I have owned several generations of the Speedgoat starting with the first which were infamous for wearing out the sole as well as poor construction of the shoe itself. However, they were super comfortable which kept me returning to them. Shoe construction greatly improved and this latest is decent and they are extremely comfortable. However the sole has worn out faster than any Hoka (or any shoe) I have previously owned. After about 100miles of walking/hiking (New Hampshire White mtns) the lugs are down to about 1/4 of their original tread. I'm a small guy, 140lbs and only wear the shoes on hikes. Very disappointing.
I had a pair of Speedgoat shoes that I loved. They were finally getting worn out so I purchased another. These Speedgoat 5 GTX shoes are even better, wonderful! They are easier to put on than my old Speedgoats, with a well-designed heel that guides my foot easily into position. Once in the shoe they are super comfortable. I originally started wearing Hoka shoes on the advice of nurses I work with when I had developed plantar fasciitis. I had tried many things, but the Hokas saved my feet. I have stayed with them ever since. These new Speedgoat shoes are no exception. Super comfortable and feet feeling great after a long day on the move at work. Plus, they are great when I take my Labrador Retriever out to play. I splash through puddles and my feet stay nice and dry. ... MoreI had a pair of Speedgoat shoes that I loved. These have been great all-around trail runners, hiking, and indoor running shoes. I wanted the GTX waterproofing and it works great, but it does cause them to run a little warm while active which was to be expected. Breathability is impressive though, even with the GTX layer so no build-up of excess moisture, just temperature. The feel is great, the cushion is soft throughout which is nice as a forefoot striker. The tread is insane and a testament to the Vibram outsoles. They provide a certain rigidity to the shoe that was both surprising and also welcomed out on the trails.I've noticed a small amount of fraying on both shoes but I've been putting them through the ringer, even wearing them into the office some days! Overall, very happy with their performances.
