Awesome for hiking, slightly better than my SG 4s

I think it would add stability and a hint of extra comfort.Compared to my Speedgoat 4s, the fit is extremely similar. With my Speedgoat 4s, I did have an issue with dirt and small rocks getting into the sneaker, so for the first time ever I started wearing low gaitors with my trail runners. But somehow, with the 5s, I haven't had the same issue.Works for me!

Exceptional but don't expect them to last long

Let me start with saying - these are incredibly comfortable. I've walked/hiked over 100 miles in them over the last 1.5 months. As a testament to their comfortability, last weekend on a fairly technical 9 mile hike, my feet were sore but I had no blisters or unique pain. In comparison, my friends who had fancy broken in hiking boots both ended up with blisters and unimaginable foot pain! So these really take the cake. However, after 100 miles, the soles are showing pretty noticeable wear and the cushion is beginning to flake off. I am pretty bummed because I love these, but they just aren't all that durable.

Good shoe, but very short-lived

I don't write product reviews very often, but specifically logged in just so I could review this shoe. The Speedgoat is an excellent shoe and served me well for ~70 miles of backpacking through Washington on my latest trip. No blisters, no pain, great traction and great support. BUT after these 70 miles, it feels like this shoe is literally already falling apart. Already!! The bottom foam is starting shred and peel off. The traction looks disproportionately worn out. These shoes look like I have used them for years. I am aware trail runners don't have excellent longevity but I literally bought these less than 30 days ago and it already looks like it needs to be replaced. This shoe is way too expensive to only last one hike. I am super disappointed and would not buy ... MoreI don't write product reviews very often, but specifically logged in just so I could review this shoe. Great support...TERRIBLE soles
22 April 2024

I have been wearing HOKA speedgoats as my primary walking shoe for several years. I wear them for daily walks and do all of my hiking and backpacking in them. I absolutely love the cushion and support but I just can no longer keep buying them. The Vibram soles just do not last. My last two pair have worn to the point of needing to be replaced (just to have decent traction) in three months. While I am a daily walker, I am not putting a major mileage on these shoes. I am so disappointed and do not anticipate buying another pair.

Hoka Speedgoat
10 October 2024

I have both the Clifton 9 and the Speedgoat. The Speedgoat is slightly narrower and ties lower on the foot. It also has more "bounce" than the Clifton. These are the only shoes I can wear all day long and like them both. If I had to choose one over the other, I would take the Speedgoat only because of a nerve I have on the top of my foot and it is more comfortable. So glad I found Hoka! I am not a runner, but do walk a lot. Very comfortable!

Love these
7 November 2023

These were my first pair of trail runners and I loved them so much I bought a second pair! I used to hike in heavy soled Merrill's or OC hiking boots and while these are good shoes, I like how light and comfortable these are. They require very little, if any, break in period. I bought originally to hike a Mammoth March (20 mile hike in under 8 hrs challenge) and they were amazing, I had no issues with my feet at all that day. I have even started to do a bit of trail running since I got these and I love how stable my feet feel in these with the wide sole.

Poor and declining quality.
12 August 2024

I've loved my Hoka Speedgoats over the years, but have noticed they continue to go downhill (pun intended) in quality each time I buy a new pair. Sometimes the fabric tears easily, within 30 miles of buying them. Sometimes the sole or parts of the tread start to peel away. Or they're just done within 80-100 miles. Once, I took them on a 10-day, 100-mile trek and wound up with a badly infected blister within a callus on my outer heel that wept green goo for days. I try very hard not to overuse REI's return policy, but I'm pretty sure my eternal optimism around Hoka trail shoes has cost REI money. I'm on my last pair and need to find a new setup. That said, the high-top hiking boots tend to be sturdier and equally as comfortable. I'm glad to see these shoes coming ... MoreI've loved my Hoka Speedgoats over the years, but have noticed they continue to go downhill (pun intended) in quality each time I buy a new pair. For the most part, they are deliciously comfortable though... I wish they were better quality. PS: my partner has had the same issue.

Support rails dont work for low arches or flat fee
31 December 2023

Normally wear women's size 9.5 or 10 in running. Shoes. 9.5 and 10 were too long. Got size 9, and 9 wide. I have low volume foot. Mid foot striker, neutral gait. Low arches/flat feet. Run mixed terrain, r I cky, sandy, cinders, boulder outcrops. Narrow gullies that were trails, with varying steepness, distance varies.Size 9 wore around house for about 30 minutes and arches felt like i was getting poke stabbed by something hard in the shoe. Looked at my arch area and bc of flat feet it layed over side of show slightly and was getting poked by the decorative sidewall, or perhaps the raised mid foot area is supposed to be a support rail(?). Anyway im guessing if my arh was higher it wouldn't have been laying on top of the rail thing. So i tried the wide, and Basically ... MoreNormally wear women's size 9.5 or 10 in running. Cushion was excellent, and it i thiught it would be a good running shoes, i had Goat 2's which were great. Unfortunately, i have to return both. I don't think these work for low arches or flat feet. Same issue with other Hokas i tried after these. So bummer i have to keep looking for 4mm/5 mm drop trail shoes.

Traction is Awesome!
27 July 2024

I needed shoes for hiking and HOKA is a highly rated brand so I thought I'd give them a try. My shoe size is 8.5 and my foot runs a little wide and the salesperson suggested I get a 9 wide. This has to be the most comfortable sneaker I've ever worn. However, as I was hiking on the trails, I noticed that my foot would turn a little, so think it's either too wide or too long. I'm thinking a 9 regular or 8.5 wide might've done the trick. If you're looking for a comfortable shoe for hiking that has a great grip, these HOKA Speedgoats did the trick for me and hopefully, will for you too!! :)

Very cushioned, comfortable and stylish trail runner
12 August 2024

These shoes are my new faves! I bought them as they were a highly recommended shoe to wear while walking the Camino de Santiago and I’m so glad i gave them a try. They were a little strange getting used to them at first as they tend to lean towards the midline but this became a non issue after a couple of long walks. I haven’t had any blisters yet and they feel very cushioned. A little getting used to the wider base, but all of this is worth it. Love love love this shoe! They are a bit pricey at over $200, but i managed to get them on sale. Even still, I would have bought them—foot health is important!
