Every great watercolor has its particular personality, and in our view, Holbein's best features are its unparalleled high-chroma colors and its transparency. One glance at Holbein's color chart reveals that these colors are all about intensity and light, with numerous botanical pinks, stormy deep blues, and fewer neutrals than you'd expect. Because the pigments are so intense and finely milled, Holbein outperforms other watercolor in thin, transparent applications. Every Holbein watercolor dilutes smoothly to create a wide range of values, from ultra-dark to subtle and light. Its bright pigments and advanced formula allow you to color more water, more evenly, with a very small amount of paint. In general, Holbein colors are less granulating and more uniform in texture and flow than the classic European watercolors on which they were based in Holbein's early days. They are also generally brighter. Even in Holbein's range of earth pigments, you'll find surprisingly bright colors, particularly in the intense gold and red undertones. 15 mL tube. Made in Japan. After years of dabbling in student-quality watercolors, Holbein are the first artist-quality watercolors I've had the pleasure to try. I was surprised at how forgiving these paints are. I can rework them with ease and the colors don't get muddy. They mix and blend smoothly too. You can adjust opacity by layering the paints and thin them out again with a wet brush. Shading is a simple, pleasurable experience. Also, I really appreciate is that these paints are said to contain no animal by-products which is why I purchased them. There are too many products out there that are made in cruelty, making it difficult for me to fully embrace my creativity with conscience, so I am thankful I am able to continue doing what I love, guilt-free, and I hope to the stars that never ... MoreAfter years of dabbling in student-quality watercolors, Holbein are the first artist-quality watercolors I've had the pleasure to try. Okay, what I have been trying to find is the basic three primary colors in watercolor that are pure colors. Cyan, Yellow, and Magenta. From these you can theoretically make all colors. Holbein has clean, bright, pure colors. I only used Holbein Yellow, Quinacridone Magenta, and Pthalo blue, (yellow shade) in the picture I included. For the cat only I used Cobalt Violet light. You can see from the picture the secondary colors of Green, Purple and Orange. I am happy with the secondary colors. No gray Purples or Olive Greens or brown Oranges. Just clean colors. Also, when I get Holbein watercolors. I get the advantage of painting in the Japanese non- dispersive color style, or by adding some Ox Gall I can paint the standard dispersive style where the color blooms out. ... MoreOkay, what I have been trying to find is the basic three primary colors in watercolor that are pure colors. I started working in watercolor 2 years ago. I bought Windsor&Newton professional watercolors and would watch videos on YouTube to learn various techniques. I could never figure out why they could achieve results so quickly and I couldn't (I've sold art done in acrylics, but I'm completely new to watercolors). Then it dawned on me that maybe I need to use a different brand... and that was it. I researched on line and decided on Holbein. I bought a couple tubes to try and needless to say..... I'm hooked. Now I have to learn how to use LESS paint! Colors are vibrant, theyre-wet very nicely, lifting is a dream yet layering is easy with less layering to achieve the final result, dried color is extremely close to wet color. Super nice quality pro watercolor paints! Vibrant, and they disperse well in wet. Saturated too, the Cobalt is amazing. The clarity is lovely on these paints and for the most part the colors are nuanced rather than overly bright or cartoonish looking. They set up very well in a DIY pan. I like this brand just as well as Daniel Smith. Daniel Smith has a more engaging and helpful website that makes it easier to locate full specs, and if you're a big fan of granulation, DS has more (and more inventive) options in that category. But Holbein seems to have a better selection of non granulating paints. They make some interesting paler and pastel colors too, none of which are in this set, except for Chinese White which is a great paint because it can dupe the effect of ... MoreSuper nice quality pro watercolor paints! I am such a big fan of Holbein Watercolours. It really is the only brand I use. To create orange I use either my carmine red or opera pink and mix it with either Indian yellow or gamboge yellow. For my purples again I will use either carmine red or opera pink with peacock blue. Very happy with the results!
Having tried many of the premium brands of aquarelles, I have finally settled on Holbein for most colors. They offer crisp, intense, consistent, brilliant color in a wide selection of colors. I find that I do not have unexpected color mixing issues with combinations that I do not frequently use, as in other brands. I therefore assume that Holbein uses fewer pigment mixtures in their preparation. While not inexpensive (most fine things are not inexpensive), these paints offer good value and the service from Dick Blick (outstanding to say the least) makes it even better...........HIGHLY RECCOMENDED!
This is my first Holbein watercolor, I own a number of their gouache colors, which are gorgeous! This is a beautiful natural green, just perfect :) I love the caps on Holbein, they rarely get stuck and are easy to take off and put back on. It's the little things!#sweepstakes
I normall do not write reviews let alone about higher type products especially in the art department. My sister and I have been watching many You Tube channels regarding various watercolor and other forms of art material. I decided to jump the fence and buy some Holbein watercolors, a big undertaking for me. i had found a bag of old paints and low and behold, my Aqua Duo oils were Holbein. Imagine my surprise. I purchased them as part of my art class at junior college had to pack away most of my supplies and forgot I had them. Those are great. However to get back to Watercolors. My learning curve with watercolors so far is limited. In learning i kept wanting to use them like acrylics or oils. Not a good idea I found. However to get back to Watercolors. My learning curve with watercolors so far is limited. In learning i kept wanting to use them like acrylics or oils. Not a good idea I found. Then I decided several days ago to jump in feet first and give it another try and opened up the box of Holbein again. I absolutely loved the colors which are bright and clean. I found I could mix colors together without fear although I can still muddy the waters so to speak. But it is easier. I now have several projects to water color that will Hopeflly get me better at this form of art work. Would I order Holbein again? Absolutely., My sister has ordered some of their product and I also ordered their Acryllic 12 paints. Have made my color swatch but not painted with them yet. That's one of my next projects in a day or so. However, from what limited time I have used them, they are like butter in consistency to use. Anyhow, sorry this is so long.
It is a brilliant pigment. Holbein's pigments I know to be fine. The Aureolin is outstanding. It moves as necessary; you can lift it, but it can soar next to a compliment !Also, Blick's site was easy to use, easy to buy and it arrived within a very reasonable timeframe. I will purchase from them again too.
