WINNER OF THE NEWBERY MEDAL WINNER OF THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARDSELECTED AS ONE OF TIME MAGAZINE'S 100 BEST YA BOOKS OF ALL TIME Stanley Yelnats' family has a history of bad luck, so when a miscarriage of justice sends him to Camp Green Lake Juvenile Detention Centre (which isn't green and doesn't have a lake) he is not surprised. Every day he and the other inmates are told to dig a hole, five foot wide by five foot deep, reporting anything they find. Why? The evil warden claims that it's character building, but this is a lie. It's up to Stanley to dig up the truth. Witty, inventive and completely unique, this is a masterpiece of storytelling that combines sly humour with irresistible, page-turning writing.

'holes' was initially an unusual read! Aimed at 12+ year olds, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book as a 50 + year old. It was a happy, laughing story! The character's names and the plot of filling in holes and then digging out holes is amusing. The lesson learnt by Stanely is rewarding.

Every piece of information that the author gives in the telling of the story in the first half of the story starts to fall into place as the story progresses. A skilful writer and a story that will remain with you. If you've seen the film forget it! The book is so much better. All of the characters have something to add to the story. It's only as the story progresses that we learn that Stanley is more involved than we could possibly imagine. Much, much more than digging holes in a desert. A story within a story! Even the cover picture hides an interesting puzzle piece in the story. A really powerful story that everyone will love.

Such a good story. Entwines a story in the present, far into the past. Keeps you guessing and wondering and leaves you realising so much! Good moral story too. Suitable for children. One of the most enjoyable reads I've read for a while (I'm 47 lol).

The book is amazing. When I was in year 6 in primary I read this and I couldnt stop. Here is a bit about the book as I finished it all. Stanley Yelnats has been sent to a brutal camp because of his great great pig stealing grandfather in the middle of the dessert with him and his 5 amazing friends they have to dig 5ft long and 5 ft deep holes every single day.But maybe after all of this there maybe after all if this there might be a historical myth behind all of this
Great book for kids (my son read it at school in year 6 and enjoyed again in year 7). Enjoyed it myself too! Also bought the film, though we watched this after the book. Would recommend both.
My son read this for his school novel and loved it. I was interested in what he was reading so read it too. A great read, fantastic message about friendship and being your own person - highly recommend it.
Our Public School made us purchase this book as our child's text for this term (3rd class). We have seen the Disney movie based on this book and it was very good. Perhaps for children a little older than third class I would have thought, but I'm only a parent, I'm not a professional educator, that is just my personal opinion.
The product came in quickly! (especially considering what is going on right now 4/24/2020) The product is clean and looks new. The previous owner of the book did a great job taking care of this classic.
A great book, well written. Suitable for kids (9yrs & over) AND adults. It keeps you wondering what's going to happen next. Hard to put the book down once you start to read. Great book to get kids interested in reading, especially boys who are harder to motivate.
really good book, i wish i could have studied this in high school. highly recommend. delivered in great quality as always
