I have a few of these locos now this one had a knackered axle gear which I replaced along with the worm and now it runs ok once again.

I myself did not buy this model but my company bought it for a little model railway in our shop, Christmas Tree Farm Chesham. Due to us buying more locos that fit in with the whole fact we sell Christmas trees our Smokey Joe sat in the engine shed for a good 2 years collecting dust and this led me to find it last month and try running it, it did not work but with the help of a wheel cleaner and the Hornby/Humbrol maintenance kit I could get it working again. After all that it ran like a dream when lubricated with the Hornby servicing oil and a wheel clean.

Great little engine for anyone starting out with a Analog 00 gauge layout like I am, study and cheep enough that it can be knock about a bit. Looking forward to seeing on the layout I'm building.
This was bought for my 94 year old father who is building a hornby train set. The train arrived as expected and was in excellent condition.
A new factory-fresh model would likely have worked, but the second-hand locomotive that I purchased had a break in the wiring that has prevented it from operating. I have tested the motor and it does work, so the job at hand is solely to rewire a connection from the wheels to the motor. I bought the locomotive purely for the mechanism, and have already removed the shell (boiler and cab casting). I am holding off buying a new shell (On30 scale) on eBay to replace the discarded HO scale shell until I get the electronics repaired.
This stalwart of the Hornby range, characterful though it is, also forms a prefect base for conversion to other prototypes. I have DCC fitted and reliveried mine as a fictitious NCB example (see pics below if they upload correctly) to work on a coal mine scene I am developing. The motors on these 0-4-0s seem to have considerably improved in the last few years so now you get more control than stopped or warp speed (as traditionally experienced with this multi-purpose chassis) which DCC improves further. Overall the price is right and there actually is a lot of detail in the cab which really sets the model off if you pick it out with careful painting. For me a winner.
This is a small loco with an 0-4-0 wheel spec. It is useful as a small shunter. I have had one converted to DCC and this was a difficult and complicated job but it can be done and is worth it. It looks the part
Stunning little loco but finished top of the class .Regards,NEIL Davies.
