While this is a nice looking curling iron, it's quite cumbersome to use as it's not super light weight nor tightly compact. It's pretty rugged & solid in quality but it's not easy to use when you're in a hurry. It heats up decently & has dials to turn to get the correct heat setting but it doesn't clamp thin fine hair tightly enough to curl. Your hair will slip out too often to get your curls done in a adequate amount of time. If you have plenty of time to be extra careful while using this curling iron & able to constantly re-clamp slipped hair, only then you may achieve curls, highly doubt they'll be the curls you'll want but curls will form. In order for that to work, iron needs to be light & compact yet well heated with tighter clamps. This iron while aesthetically pleasing just wasn't functional for what I needed.

This is a curling iron, plain & simple. It heats up relatively quickly, in about 1 minute. It can be set on whatever degree of heat is desired with the dial beginning at 280 degrees & maxing out at 455 degrees. Where the cord attaches to the handle, it swivels so there’s no fighting with a cord that’s tangled. The end remains cool so it can be held while curling the hair. My hair is long, thick & coarse. I’ve not been successful with curling irons actually giving me a curl that holds. The first time using this, it’s recommended to try it at low heat. I did & my short sideswept bangs pretty much held after I sprayed them. The curl in the rest of my hair didn’t hold at the lower heat & I didn’t really expect it to. Later, I tried the iron after heating it to about 410 degrees & I got the same results as I do with any curling iron. What works on my thick, long, coarse hair is to curl it with a flat iron at 410 degrees which is why I chose that temp for the curling iron. I don’t know if it’s the flat surface grabbing more of the hair or what but I get a great curl that lasts with a flat iron. With a curling iron, I got more what I should get with a flat iron, relatively smooth with a little curl on the end. There’s nothing wrong with this curling iron. Good features are control of the degree of heat desired, a cord that swivels, a wand with a good hair grip & it turns off automatically after 2 hours. The downside for me is the cost. For me, this iron doesn’t do any better curls than any other one I’ve used, it’s features just might make things a little more convenient. I’ll stick with my flat iron.

I have to re-curl that hair section.I like the dial and indicator light and the cord is long enough for my needs. It seems I need a hotter temp than I'm used to using, but I have enough heat to meet my needs, without using the highest setting.I will continue using this iron and update if I have more to add.

Let me start with, I am HORRIBLE at curling my hair. On a 1-10 scale of hair curling skills, I am about a -1000. I have shoulder-length fine wavy hair, and I usually straighten it. Not because I particularly love straight hair, but because my hair looks like crap when it's wavy, and straightening is easy. I've watched some youtube videos on curling with a flat iron, and I've kind of been able to follow those, but I'm not the biggest fan of the curls that produces. I wanted the real deal - but every time I try, it's a total disaster. Those barrel-style ones just do nothing for my hair. And the clip-style ones, somehow, I end up with a crimp/line in my hair, or when I release it, I end up getting my hair tangled and I end up screaming in frustration and giving up. ... MoreLet me start with, I am HORRIBLE at curling my hair. And the clip-style ones, somehow, I end up with a crimp/line in my hair, or when I release it, I end up getting my hair tangled and I end up screaming in frustration and giving up. Like I said, no hair curling skills. To add salt to the wound, my hair never even holds a curl for longer than half a day unless I put so much product in, my hair is a frozen lump on my head.So fine, let me try this. It won't work, and I'll give it to someone else when I fail with it. Well color me fifty shades of surprised when this magical curling iron actually freaking worked!! The barrel is so beautifully smooth that my hair just falls right out of it when I release it - no more tangles or lines. The tip at the end is perfect to hold on to, so no more burned fingers. The swivel cord helps with my klutziness. And with the different heat settings I can protect my hair - 310 is recommended for fine hair (and for color treated/damaged hair like mine) - and actually gets my curls to set. And would you believe, less heat, works better! (This curling iron isn't digital, and doesn't have a mark for 310 - so the first set of dots after 280 is going to be the one you want!)

Previously, I reviewed the Hot Tools Gold Curling Iron and found it lacking on some key features. All these have been addressed with this Professional BLACK Gold iron. First, the barrel and clip do not stick with the use of my styling product. Next, the light flashes until the temperature setting is reached at which time it is steady until the iron is turned off. Lastly, there is an automatic shut off feature (the two hour shut off may be great for a salon, but for home it is a bit excessive). The cord is a bit long (9 feet) with a swivel attachment to the iron. (Again, the cord length may be a great benefit for salon use, but may be a drawback at home.)Overall, this is an attractive hair styling tool that gave me great curls, left my hair soft and had all the ... MorePreviously, I reviewed the Hot Tools Gold Curling Iron and found it lacking on some key features. The small dial that allows you to adjust the temperature setting is too easily moved. On several occasions it has been "reset" to a higher temperature just through routine handling of the iron for storage between uses. I must check the setting with each use now to avoid "frying" my hair. 4 stars.
I have never owned a curling iron but I always wanted one. This one was the perfect choice for me. It is beginner friendly having a temperature selection dial from 280 degrees to 455. It also has an on off switch so you can leave it plugged in. I like the kick stand so I don’t burn the countertop. The cord attached to the end has a swiveling end so the cord doesn’t kink up. I was concerned it would be heavy, I have a bad neck, two surgeries and a fusion and I have trouble holding things over my head because my hands go numb, this was not an issue this iron, it is feather light. Your hair stays put under the clip and curls around the wand with ease. I have very straight fine hair and this made my hair look thick and full of body. The tip is ample to hold onto without burning yourself. My hair still looked good the next morning! It heats up in seconds and has an indicator light to let you know you are at the temp you set. This is a wonderful curling iron even for a novice. I highly recommend you don’t wait until you are 55 to get one! I love this
I'm definitely not a pro when it comes to using various tools to style my hair. One thing I really like about this curling iron is that it's forgiving for the inexperienced person like me. I prefer curling irons/wands like this that have a hair clip grip to help hold the ends of your hair in place while you wind hair. My hair is held tightly, but not so much that it is painfully pulled on when I try to unroll the hair from the want. Heats up well and maintains heat well. Doesn't fluctuate between every curl so you end up going over some pieces of hair multiple times. I like that temp control is easy to read and isn't position in such a way that you bump the knob every time you touch the curling wand.I've been using this for several months now, and it's still a top ... MoreI'm definitely not a pro when it comes to using various tools to style my hair. No problems with heating up or staying at the temp you set it at. I wipe the barrel and clamp down after each use, so there's not been any trouble with buildup on the surface or with the paint/coating flaking off. Swivel base on the cord works great and hasn't come loose. Holds up to travel, too. Overall, I'm very happy with how well this curling iron has performed. It's gone through some rough packing for trips, a few unintentional drops, and some other bumps along the way, but it still works as well as it did the first day out of the box. For the price this is a well-made hair styling product.
My wife works in a professional office and is expected to carry a presence. She styles her hair every morning, and she considers herself to be a loyal customer of Hot Tools Curling Irons. This loyalty did not come easy, as she tried many brands before placing her trust in this company. To her, she does not have the time in the morning to waste with flimsy products. This model in the review has a 1 inch diameter for a tighter curlThis 1-inch model is the company’s “Black Gold” line and it is more expensive than the other ones that she haves (they have a white handle as seen in the picture). She likes the Black Gold’s handle more as it feels better in the hand. But she is a very practical person and she wanted me to share the below quote to those who are trying to decide on the right model.“Functionally, the black gold model is equivalent in performance as the lower priced Hot Tools model that she uses with the white handle and it is much less expensive. The black gold thermostat goes to 455 degrees, where the other model stops at 450, and that extra 5 degrees does not matter to me. All three of them get hot very fast, all of them have a thermostat for adjusting the temperature, and they have the swivel-cord-connector so the that power cord does not twist. All three have a comfortable grip, and a great amount of tension on the wand for holding the hair. You will be very happy with any of these models in terms of performance and function. To me, the only difference is in the color of the curling iron and that may be a reason to spend more on the black-gold model, or not.”So there you have it. She loves this curling iron, but she also loves the other HotTools curling irons that were much less expensive but not as pretty.
I actually really liked this curling iron. I have used quite a few in my life, but had given them up in the past few years, once the craze for the curling irons with no hair grippers started seizing the nation. This one grabs my hair firmly and keeps the ends in place while the rest of it heats my hair. I like the fact that you can heat it up to the temperature that you want (some of us have coarse hair; some, fine hair). The iron heated up quickly; like, two or three minutes. After that, since I was in a hurry, I did a speed curl of my hair, taking the bottom into four sections and quickly curling four large sections into a large curls.I was happy to see that all four sections curled easily, and what's more, they STAYED curled. I didn't have to go over and re-do ... MoreI actually really liked this curling iron. After that, since I was in a hurry, I did a speed curl of my hair, taking the bottom into four sections and quickly curling four large sections into a large curls.I was happy to see that all four sections curled easily, and what's more, they STAYED curled. I didn't have to go over and re-do the curling anywhere. The iron was hot enough (but not too hot; it's not like I smelled burning hair or anything), and I was able to accomplish this in under five minutes, as I was in a rush. I then brushed everything out and left it with just a little body and wave, as I like it.This was super easy, and the curl stayed put. My hair didn't get flat. It stayed full of body and bounce the entire day. The curl was perfect; giving just enough body to liven up the hairstyle, but not full-on ringlets. And staying until the next day.
