The Hoya 46mm HD Protector Filter is a simple, clear filter with a 1x filter factor and is designed to provide general protection for your lens. This optically clear filter does not affect overall image quality while helping to prevent dust, scratches, moisture, and other substances from reaching or damaging your lens's front element. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, eight layers of anti-reflection coatings are applied to each side. This total of 16 coatings offers a high degree of protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean for longer than uncoated filters. Clear filter offers general protection for your lens. Does not require adjustments to exposure while in use. Eight-layers of multi-coating on each side to prevent internal ghosting and reflections. Multi-coatings promote effective cleaning with regard to water, oil, and stains. Creates no additional coloration or contrast. Thin, lightweight aluminum-alloy filter ring helps to prevent vignetting. Knurled front edges provide a more textured grip when mounting or removing it from a lens. 46mm front filter threads allow for use with other filters. Plastic case for storage and transport.

This HD Protector line is made in Japan compared to the Hoya UX UV line which is made in Philippine. Have both versions. It's double the price but not sure double the performance. In any case, this seller has the best price for this line and fast shipping.

I bought this Hoya filter as a front protection filter on a wide angle expensive principal lens. Some would argue that lower priced filters such as the Hoya HMC series, with about 98% transmission, are good enough for anybody. However, the principal filtering function of these protective UV filters, is NOT the increase in transmission from perhaps 90-92% for uncoated filters, up to 98% for the HMC filter. It is the reduction of the REFLECTED light from 8-10% down to 2% or less. This UHMC filter reduces that reflected light by another factor of three, and it is what the reflected light adds to one's pictures that is the deficiency of poor filters. One disadvantage of virtually all such fiters on wide angle lenses, is that the reflectance curve is angle sensitive. The only cure for this would be for the lens manufacturer to design a radially graded filter that matched each wide angle lens design. That would be prohibitively expensive for most of us.A simple sun reflection test of this filter versus the less expensive HMC demonstrates the lower reflectance of the UHMC.

I use Hoya filters on all my lenses because why spend big bucks for premium optics only to put a cheap piece of glass in the way of the image? Any high end filter is probably fine but I've never been disappointed with anything from Hoya so I've stuck with using their filters for 40 years. I always keep a UV filter in place to protect the front of the lens only remove it if using another filter instead.

I've learned the hard way that buying cheap filters is worse than false economy - it can ruin your photography, and cost you extra money! If you've spent the money on a lens that's good enough for you to want to protect its front element with a UV filter, that lens deserves a good one. So get one of these. You won't regret it. If you do buy a cheap filter, you can end up cursing your lens, wondering what's wrong with it, then end up buying the filter you should have bought in the first place. So don't go there. Just go straight for a good one.
Bought this to replace one that I accidently damages, better than the expensive lense it was attached to. I have been very happy with the Hoya HD's. I have a Sony A7R11, when I bought the first one I did a series of before and after pixel comparisons looking at resolution and fringeing effects. I copuld not detect any difference. As the lenses we have are relativley expensive i consider that using one of these fileters is a good insurance policy.
Highly rated by Ken Rockwell the revered and well known photographic expert and reviewer and I recommend photgraphers to investigate Kens opinions on the web. Their is a clear step improvement from this new to me at least Hoya HD nano range but check out Ken Rockwell on anything new or not so new for his advice, I do. Great range of filters from Hoya!
This is an older version of this protector, but it is nicely built and it has 16 Multi coat layers on it. I don't know if the newer one is better, but this one seems fine for the price reduction!
The difference between HD and Pro1 is optically impressive. Whether it's ultimately worth more than twice the cost is down to the end user, but for me, the better IQ and easier cleaning mean Heavy Duty is worth the extra outlay. It's still visibly less perfect than a good lens front element, so some may prefer HD3 with tougher and more effective nano coating, but you won't see difference in the images
This is the top-of-the-line Hoya filter. It is made of hard glass and is heavily coated. It really resists fingerprints. Although it is made of hard glass, I would use a less expensive filter if I were shooting in a hostile environment such as at the beach in high winds.
