I purchased the first HP Sprocket a few years ago for my then 16-year-old daughter. Although she was the user, it impressed me so much that I decided to write one of my first reviews ever. I loved the fact that it was so easy to use that I did not have to be her IT support as I usually am. We both loved the fact that the picture quality was very good for its size and the printer was so small and light that she could carry it in her purse everywhere she went. Battery lasted a long time and there was no ink to worry about. The same features that we loved are still in this new model, the Sprocket Select. One of the few complaints we had was that the picture were a bit too small. This model fixes that to an extent. It is not as big as I would want but it is not tiny anymore. My daughter thinks the size is perfect. I believe I just have to accept that dads look at it from a different perspective but I might admit that I really like it.The app allows you to add text, stickers designed by artists, and frames. They are so easy to use and fun. We quickly figured out that texts and stickers would rotate using two fingers or move using one. A huge range of colors and types are available for texts. After editing your pictures (optional), you can either print or share them online to Instagram, Facebook, or Google Photos. You can also tag your pictures and the app will automatically queue them up to print. My daughter, now 19, had a lot of fun with those features and I have found myself playing with them too. I’m not into journaling or collage but she is and her satisfaction is obvious and so is her 10-year-old sister that can now play with the older Sprocket.Printing takes about 1 minute and 15 seconds. Not especially fast but in my opinion, it is perfectly acceptable for this type of printer. It uses thermal papers, which means you don’t have to worry about ink or any other type of cartridge. Once you add the special paper, you’re ready to go. In my experience, this is much better than any Polaroid-style camera although the latter is more a retro preference and I cannot argue with that. One cool thing that we noticed is that the color of the LED that indicates power can be changed to a color that you like. Who would have thought of that? It has a beautiful design that most women and many men will like. Another cool feature is that by scanning the printer lid within the app, it will show battery status and connectivity in AR.While you can get better picture quality from a bigger printer, you probably won’t be dissatisfied. I love photography and all things considered I am happy with what this little thing can produce. Light and convenient, even for traveling, and it can be paired to more than one device/users, which HP calls party mode.I would easily buy it (I got this one for free) just like I did the first model simply because I truly like it and so does my daughter. It does deserve five starts and my recommendation.

Certainly great for photobooks & other projects.

Wow this is a cool little well designed product from HP. HP Sprocket is lightweight and easy to use without a doubt but also is very convenient when you need it. It’s small enough to throw into a bag and go.HP Sprocket allows for you to print photos directly from your phone that uses Zink paper. Zink paper is fairly cheap and the most common. The images come out clean and clear, perfect saturation and glossy. I honestly can’t believe something this small and can print this quality of images. But have to keep in mind that it’s still a mini photo printer but it does the job of printing fantastic 2x3 paper. The real magic here is the HP Sprocket app where all the features are contained, things like exclusive stickers that’s seems to be co-designed by artist. There are also photo frames giving you a significant amount of frames to choose from. You can also select the LED color on the front which my significant other loved and enjoyed. This little device have my favorite feature... Photo collages. You break images up into 4 parts and 9 parts so you can setup multiple images as one. This will allow you to connect those into one big image to make a poster at will. Another feature is a “Photo ID” feature that allow you to print out headshots better. Party mode is nice if you are going to meet with friends, take photos and they can connect to your printer to print things out. (Up to 3 people can connect.) “Tag” feature just prints out everything in the social media that you tag your photo with.I guess some of my downsides to this version maybe two things I encountered. First: The app needs a few improvements as it was a little slow to respond to touch; ended up printing out one image twice. Another thing is they really only start you off with only 10 Zink paper sheets, once you getting use to the mini printer it’s almost out of sheets before you get started. HP should have at lease put in 20 sheets to get the consumer to really enjoy their purchase. So I recommend buying Zink sheets along with this device. My partner loves it, and I happen to enjoy it as well. It print out dare I say “cute photos” the stickers are nice as well as provide a good stickers to choose from. I’m sure will be updated over time. This could also serve as a great gift to a partner, child, family member, or friend who just want a easy no frills way to print with a smartphone. The app enhances the features of the device without a doubt and I would recommend this to many families if I could. HP I would have to say designed this with humans who want accessibility in mind.

This review is not about the HP Sprocket, but about the case that is part of the bundle. The whole point in getting the Sprocket is to have a compact printer and the only reason to get the bundle is to have a matching compact bag. The bag that was delivered with my bundle is for a digital SLR and is at least 3 to 4x bigger than it needs to be. To take the bag back, i have to return the all three items and wait for my replacement bundle to be delivered. I recommend buying just the printer and then buy the case separate so you know what you are getting. So ridiculous!!!

So, imagine a chill night at home or a small get-together. A few of y’all can have fun printing some pretty cool photos of your evening/event.Simple to use, all you have to do is download the HP Sprocket app on your smartphone and go through a super-quick setup process. The printer connects via Bluetooth 5.0, so it’s wireless. The app connects to the camera roll on your phone, and you can select photos to print as-is, or make simple adjustments like brightening/darkening, color filters, or applying special graphics like borders and other cool stuff. Press print and voila! With the app, you can also connect your Instagram, Facebook, and Google Photos accounts to print your photos from those platforms. There are some gripes I have about this printer, though. The app is very basic when it comes to photo-editing. In fact, it’s not that great. You would be better off adjusting the brightness, color, etcetera from your phone’s default photo app or through something more advanced like Adobe Lightroom before printing via the Sprocket app. Also, the overall image quality of the final prints isn’t that great, but for what this device is – and what it can do instantly – it’s fine. The bottom line is the HP Sprocket Select is a great photo printer to print fun-size photos easily and quickly. I highly recommend for someone looking for something simple without a lot of fuss.

Fun for parties
4 October 2019

This little pocket sized printer is a great thing to have around for gatherings, especially if you have teenaged girls like I do. I got the Sprocket a couple of days before our annual end-of-summer blowout and decided to let the girls try it out. They had an absolute blast and I was glad I had the forethought to pick up extra paper because they burned through all I had and kept asking for more. It's super-easy to connect and up to three people can be connected at once. That was a great bonus since several kids were snapping pics they wanted to print. I got worried about the battery life since it was running pretty much nonstop the whole afternoon so I plugged it in using the included micro USB cord but I think it would have been ok if I hadn't. I got worried about the battery life since it was running pretty much nonstop the whole afternoon so I plugged it in using the included micro USB cord but I think it would have been ok if I hadn't. I just didn't want a bunch of upset kids who couldn't print their funny pics to take home as souvenirs of the day. The prints aren't cheap at around $.65 each and the quality isn't like a true photo printing service, but the ease of use, ability to ad borders, words, and whatever else, and being able to have them ready to go before everyone left, upped the fun factor and made for good party favors. Since then, I've played around with printing from social media and that works as easily as tagging a photo and hitting print. Easy-peasy. I'd suggest stocking up on paper at first since you are likely to use this little printer a bunch just playing around. The ink is embedded in the paper so there's no worrying about running out in mid-print which is an added nicety. Only thing to note is that this is most definitely not a speed-demon, so if you're using it at a party be sure to allow plenty of time to let it do its thing.

Good, not great print quality. Fun with many uses.

I got this device mainly for making fun pictures for my kids that they can use as stickers for their enjoyment. However, because of the many features built into the Sprocket app, I’ll be using it for an upcoming birthday party as a photo booth option for our guests. Until then, we’ve been printing pictures with fun borders and designs so my kids can use them in school projects, as well as to decorate their stuff. They love that each picture can be turned into a sticker too.The picture quality of the printer is good if you’re not expecting high quality prints (such as those from high resolution photo printers). This is the only area that may be an issue for some people, hence my overall score of 4. If you get one of these knowing its limitations in print quality, like I did, then you’ll be satisfied with its capabilities. For example, see the attached pic that shows a printed version of a color grid. The original image is shown on the phone, and the printed version is right next to it. The printer for the most part was able to print most of the colors well. When viewed by itself, and not next to the vibrant phone’s screen, the printed version of the color grid had good color separation. And if you’re thinking of getting this little portable printer for fun projects, crafting, or for parties, the print quality is perfect for these situations. One tip I noticed was that if you want to adjust a picture’s features, such as lighting and color, it may be best to do this in the Sprocket app itself. I was adjusting my pictures on my phone’s native photo app, then printed them on the Sprocket printer, and many of my pictures were over saturated. When I made similar adjustments within the Sprocket app instead, the printed images came out much nicer. My guess is that the Sprocket app is designed and fine-tuned for the printer. It seemed to handle my adjustments to match the capabilities of the printer. Makes sense, since the printer and app are designed for each other.Overall, this is a great little portable printer that can be used in many creative ways. I really like the fact that these prints are stickers. In my opinion, it’s what makes this printer unique.

High Quality Prints out of a Pocket Sized Printer
3 October 2019

Full disclosure: I received this product for free in return for my honest opinion about it.With that out of the way, overall this printer is great for those who like to print out photos they take on their smartphone and want to share it with friends, family, scrapbook, or decorate your walls with them.Let's break it down:Quality:The quality of the actual printer is pretty good. The outer case is made of plastic which is one down side, I do wish it was made of aluminum or some other metal so you don't run the risk of cracking it when you take off the lid to change the paper. The print quality is fantastic for a printer this size. The pictures are about 2.5x3.5 in size, but the clarity and color in which it prints is amazing. I did not expect such high quality prints from a pocket device.Functionality:Set up was a breeze, scan the QR code included, download the app, pair it to the printer and voila, you're done. The app (Sprocket) connects to your camera roll, camera, Facebook, or Instagram allowing you to print pictures from basically any source you want. Printing from camera/camera roll was very easy and you can add filters, edit and tune the image, or add stickers too.. I did run into an issue where when I synced it to my Instagram, the app would complain that every picture was "low quality" and would not print well. Not sure why as all the IG pictures I have were taken in high quality fashion (portrait mode etc.) Another cool feature is you can take pictures of art work and turn them into stickers (the paper has an adhesive side if you want to turn them into stickers). This app also has an AR feature where you can look at your printer through AR and it will show you the battery life and print queue. Cool, yes, useful.... not in my opinion, it's a little gimmicky. One last feature I love is that you can create grids of pictures, so you can do a collage of 4-6 pictures on one picture which makes for fun exciting pictures to print, and it also has a photo-booth setting where you can do photo-booth style pictures with your friends and print them instantly.Maintenance:Charging the printer is easy, all you need is the provided micro USB cord and a USB outlet to charge from. Battery life seems to be a few hours after a full charge. Changing the paper is easy, the printer comes with 10 sheets and instructions telling you to put it face down, making it blatantly obvious with an orange sheet of paper how to do so. The only issue I see is the plastic cover is a little flimsy that covers the paper and I worry about it breaking. The price per print is a little expensive, 50-60 cents per print. But the fact you do not have to buy ink cancels that out as the ink is infused into the paper. I do wish HP gave you 20 sheets instead of 10 when you get the product as 10 is not enough to get started.Final Thoughts:All in all, this printer provides great print quality in a form factor that can fit in your pocket. The app is easy to use and you can seamlessly create fun pictures to share or keep for yourself, or make stickers out of them. The customization of pictures is endless, the fun you can have is endless and since it is app driven, it only adds the possibility of new features in the near future.

Super Fun Portable Photo Printer
26 September 2019

The HP Sprocket Select is a super fun way to print and edit photos on the go. Every time I introduce one of my friends to it they immediately ask where they can get one. The build quality is nice and compact, about as this as a DVD case and a little wider than my cell phone and it weighs less than half a pound. Inside the box there is the printer itself, a USB cable, a pack of zink paper to get you started and instructions. Everything was super easy to get started, just download the app, connect to your phone, install the paper and get printing. There are several options and fun things you can do with your photos. There are your usual editing tools, borders, text and stickers you can add to jazz up your photos. You can also add AR experiences where your photos are ... MoreThe HP Sprocket Select is a super fun way to print and edit photos on the go. You can also add AR experiences where your photos are geo tagged and then when you use the app to scan your photo a bunch of location info pops up and other details. You can also break up a photo into tiles and have one photo split into 4 separate pieces and stick them together to get a unique collage effect. I took off one star because i found most photos I would have to edit to make them a tad bit brighter as i found a lot of them would come out darker than expected and the color was not accurate as the original photo, but coming from such a small printer and the ink paper technology i did not expect 100% accuracy. Other than that this is a great little printer that anyone would enjoy using and it'll provide a lot of fun times and memories.

The Sprocket is a must have for quick prints

Love this little printer, it's easy to set up with the app and makes zipping out prints from phone or tablet a breeze. I've connected it to my iPad and my iPhone XS Max and zipped out a few prints. Right off the bat first thing I noticed is the print quality is much improved over the old version that I have. It's definitely worth an upgrade that's for sure! The sticky prints are great for scrapbooking, doing collages or sticking on the wall (which I've done in my cubicle at work. It's perfect! It does work on its own battery and comes with a micro USB cable to charge it with. Unlike the prior model, it has a nice finish that looks great and fits nicely in my laptop bag. In my testing so far, I can't really find anything that I don't like other than things I wish it could do like taking non-stick paper or the ability to print the smaller or larger zink papers. The print size it does is great though. The App, which is probably the most important thing, does work well and enables you to create custom stickers, print photos and edit them before you print them. It really is much more than just an app to print the photos but instead helps you create just about anything with your photos and make your own stickers.I'd definitely recommend this printer to anyone looking for a tool to help with art/scrapbooking and collecting snapshots. If you have a prior generation, this is definitely one that's worth getting as it definitely prints far better than the original model that I have.

Would make a great gift!

This sprocket photo printer has been awesome so far. I do have experience using a small inkless photo printer like this from a competing brand and I have to say the HP might have a slight edge over the competitor. HP has done an outstanding job with the sprocket app. That is the best thing about this sprocket printer in my opinion. For starters, the app is very user friendly and easy to navigate and I have not noticed any glitching. Within the app there are so many different things you can do to your photos before printing them. I have personally used the small, sticker photos from printers like this for scrapbooking and it is very handy. The possibilities are nearly endless of what you can add to the photos from frames, stickers, filters, and even minor editing of the photos. The ability to add so many decorations or designs to plain photos is awesome and I think could be appealing to a very wide demographic. This printer is also very sleek looking and the design on the top is cool. Hard to believe something with this small of a footprint can print photos but it is awesome technology. This printer is also very easy to load to compared to the competitor. The one that I used from a competitor had to have the top slide up and then pulled off before loading, in my opinion posing a pretty big risk of breaking plastic tabs. But this hp sprocket printer just simply uses magnets to hold the top on so it is a simple pull up and set down to open and close the printer for loading. The magnetic design is excellent! In my opinion, those are all the strengths of the sprocket printer, however I think it slacks in print quality compared to the competitor. Now I know since this in an inkless system, one can only expect so much when it comes to quality, but since I’ve seen better from an inkless system like this, I know HP could have done better. The photos all have a strange, sharp/pixelated look to them, almost like you cranked up the sharpness on a photo all the way up on your phone. It is most noticeable on faces, and less noticeable on landscape photos. I also noticed all the photos come out with a purple/magenta haze to them, now this could probably be avoided by editing it before printing, of course it would look weird on screen but might print better. Lastly, I have also noticed when printing, that even if you do not move the photo in the print area, just simply select a photo and hit print, never touching the photo, the photo does not sit quite right on the paper. Almost all of my photos have come out slightly cropped, a little bit of all sides are missing but this is not the end of the world. But other photos have come out with a white line on top, like blank paper for the first more than ⅛ of and inch, despite on screen in the print area there was no white line nor was the photo touched or moved. Just a lack of consistency in printing is what I've noticed, however still impressive that photos can come out looking the way they do with no ink cartridges at all. Overall this is a great product that can have tons of uses and be appealing to many people, it would also make a great gift!
