My obsession with coffee has grown over the past few years, fueled by working from home at strange hours during the lockdown. I've been in the market for a while for a good starter espresso machine and am really happy with this one.Fist off, it's an attractive machine. It takes up little counter space and fits nicely under a cabinet with plenty of room to open the bean hopper on top. There's also a small, non-heated pad on which to store a couple cups or a frothing pitcher. The sizable water tank is on the right side but pulls out straight from the front. This is great because you can set this near another appliance and don't need to move it to refill the water. Since espresso is usually small in portion size the water tank lasts a long time between refills. It should be noted there is no included water filter. Since coffee in general is affected by water quality I use filtered water from my fridge and would recommend doing so.This is also the first time I've used whole beans to make coffee and it couldn't be simpler. Just fill the top with your espresso of choice and the machine does the rest. The lid on the hopper has a nice rubber gasket to keep the beans fresh and dry, too! I noticed it even shakes the beans gently to make sure they flow into the grinder smoothly. In the front of the hopper is an opening in which you can put a scoop of ground coffee if you want to switch to something else or just make a cup of coffee rather than espresso. I tend to drink iced coffee, so I haven't tried that yet.On the front is a series of buttons, each with 1-3 small lights. Pressing the espresso button, for instance, selects between a single or double shot. The size button toggles between three different levels. The LEDs are a little small and kind of cheap looking for such a nice machine. One neat feature is that the drink dispenser slides up and down to accommodate different size cups. I much prefer this over what most machines do where you have to flip down a platform for smaller cups or pull out part of the platform for larger cups. There are dual nozzles so you can make a single or dual cups in one shot.To make espresso just put the cup under the dispenser, press the espresso button and hit the start button. The machine does the rest, grinding the beans, tamping down the espresso internally and brewing. The resulting drink is outstanding. I've never been a fan of expresso from the pod type machines because it just tastes like burned coffee to me. This, on the other hand, has a rich flavor that I really enjoy. The machine produces an attractive looking espresso with that nice light brown top layer and looks like something you would get from a coffee bar. My wife, who is not a coffee drinker, has been requesting lattes from me, so that should say something! This is my first foray into steaming milk and while it takes some practice I'm starting to get better at it, It should be noted that there is no included frothing pitcher, which you will need. I got an inexpensive stainless steel one and it works well. The first few tries my milk came out foamy, but I'm starting to the get hand of angling the pitcher just right to create some rotation and get that nice, creamy micro-bubble texture. Watch a few online videos and you'll get the hang of it in no time. There are other machines that use a container of milk to automatically froth, but I actually prefer to do it this way since it gives me more control over the finished product. It's simple enough to just pour a little milk into a pitcher. The milk wand pops on and off easily for quick cleaning. I give it a good rinse in the sink immediately after using it and pop it right back on, easy peasy. That's pretty much all the maintenance needed, other than dumping out the drip tray and internal bin where the machine drops the used espresso. There's a way to get into the internal brew system for further cleaning by taking out the tank and opening the side, but I don't force doing that much.I couldn't be happier with this as a first espresso maker and its dead-simple operation. I look forward to getting better at my barista abilities and trying out all kinds of new espresso drinks!

Among its best-known consumer products are Norelco grooming devices, Sonicare oral health products, Magnavox & Philips audio and video products, Philips kitchen appliances and personal healthcare. Saeco, based in Bologna, Italy developed the first completely automatic espresso machines in 1985 and became a unit of Philips in 2009.Here is a summary of the key features of this superb device:⢠Philips 1200 Series Fully Automatic Espresso Machine (Model: EP1220/04)⢠Produces coffee, espresso, hot water, steam on demand⢠Thermal flavor extraction technology brews at a precise temperature⢠Electronic touch controls with LEDs for all settings⢠15 bars of pressure for coffee/espresso extraction⢠61 ounce removable water reservoir with auto-metering⢠AquaClean water filter can be added to water reservoir (not included)⢠Three individual cup brew sizes for coffee and for espresso⢠Three brew strengths for both coffee and espresso⢠Ceramic burr-type bean grinder with 12 fineness settings, 20,000 cup capacity⢠10 ounce coffee bean storage capacity on top of unit⢠Aroma seal bean cover to maintain coffee freshness⢠Can also use pre-ground coffee (poured into separate flap in bean storage area)⢠Cup warming tray area on top of machine⢠Twin coffee dispensers adjustable in height from 3.4â to 5.8â above drip tray⢠Milk frother with easily-cleaned, removable two piece pannarello⢠Adjustable water hardness setting⢠Adjustable water temperature setting-⢠Automatic descaling mode and cleaning-needed warning light⢠Drip tray with water level sensor is easily removed for cleaning⢠Waste container holds grounds from at least 12 servings, easy to empty⢠Removable brew group for easy cleaning⢠Color: Glossy Black and Matte Black, chrome highlights⢠Includes full instructions and trouble-shooting guide⢠1400 watt heating unit⢠Cord length: 40 inches⢠Dimensions: 14.6 inch height, 16.5 inch depth, 9.0 inch width⢠Weight: 16 pounds⢠Two year warranty on parts and laborWhen you unbox the Philips 1200 Automatic Espresso Machine you should be very impressed by the elegant design and the quality of construction. It is a beautiful combination of glossy black and matte black surfaces, accented by chrome dispensers and features a full, but very intuitive control panel on the upper part of the front, angled slightly upward for maximum legibility. Below the control panel, on the left side of the coffee dispensers, is a classic pannarello for steam and hot water. On the right side is the slide-out 61 ounce water reservoir. Below the dispensers is a large drip tray which easily slides out for cleaning. It holds a massive 24 ounces before it must be emptied. In the center of the drip tray is a compartment for holding used coffee grounds after brewing. That container will hold the grounds for more than a dozen large cups of coffee and it is easily emptied and cleaned. Note: Although the instructions suggest that the removable plastic parts are dishwasher-safe, do not take a chance! The high temperatures of most dishwashers can easily damage or warp these parts and replacement would be very costly. A quick rinse and some light had-washing is all that is required! To start using the espresso machine, you simply fill the water reservoir and add coffee beans to the top tray. The unit will hold 10 ounces of coffee beans and has a nice, sealing top which protects the freshness of the beans. There is also a flip-up section to allow you to add ground coffee to prepare your drinks. A nice option if you have a preference for pre-ground coffee!Next, just press the on/off button and wait. The unit will go through a cleaning cycle and run some hot water through the lines. This takes about 60 seconds and then you can select your drink type (espresso, coffee or hot water. Once you make your selection, you can adjust the strength and quantity of your drink by pressing two adjacent controls. Then press the start button to activate the process. You will hear beans being ground in the ceramic grinder and the brew group will extract the maximum flavor from those grounds using 15 bars of steam pressure from the boiler. The liquid is dispensed through twin nozzles into a single larger cup or a pair of smaller cups. The nozzles can be raised or lowered to match the height of your cup â a handy feature if you use tall travel containers for your coffee. How good is this super automatic espresso machine? I have a good perspective to judge it since I previously owned a classic Saeco Magic Comfort Super Automatic Espresso Machine that I purchased for over $1,600 about twenty years ago. It was widely regarded as one of the finest automatic espresso machines ever made. (See photo) As I noted above, Saeco was acquired by Philips in 2009 and its designs form the basis for all of the Philips Automatic Espresso Machines. This Philips model 1200 is clearly a direct descendant of my great Saeco machine. It has all of its features as well as the same general layout of parts. But the new Philips 1200 has been improved in many important ways.First, the unit is more compact and takes up less counter space. It fits nicely under kitchen cabinets and the access to the bean storage is much better. The water tank arrangement is far better. One issue with automatic espresso machines is the need to refill the water reservoir frequently. The news Philips design provides a much larger reservoir and it is much more accessible for refilling it. The controls are much more intuitive and provide more flexibility in customizing the drink produced. The drip tray and the waste grounds receptacle are far better. When you use an espresso machine frequently you really appreciate every design element which enables easier maintenance. This Philips 1200 certainly gets an A+ in all of these seemingly mundane, but vitally important areas. The quality of an espresso machine really comes down to taste of the drinks produced, consistency of output and ease of use. I give this Philips 1200 the highest marks in all of these areas. The espresso always has the thick, rich crema you expect from a good coffee house and the aroma is superb. The machine has outstanding consistency in quality, so you can expect the same fine result each time. The steam from the pannarello is strong and hot, which facilitates quickly making properly steamed milk for cappuccinos and other lattes. It is flexible, so you can put your milk container next to the coffee machine, rather than on the drip tray. But keep in mind the old computer saying: GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out)! The quality and taste of the beans you use will be the biggest determinant in the quality of your coffee drinks. If you are not happy with the taste of your coffee or espresso, try another brand of beans or experiment with various roasts until you find one that suits your taste. The problem of bad tasting coffee/espresso will almost certainly be traced to the beans, not the fault of this fine machine! There are only a few negatives I can note about this device. First, the water reservoir is designed to accommodate an AquaClean water filter but none is included. These cost about $35 for a pair (or you can buy a generic equivalent for about $17/pair) and its omission is hard to understand. If you trust your water source you really donât need the filter, but itâs a small price to pay for peace of mind. Second, the instructions, while pretty thorough could certainly benefit from a nicely illustrated quick start guide. I urge you to go to the Philips website and view the videos available there (and on YouTube) which demonstrate the correct operation and maintenance of the device. Finally, while the machine does have a space designated as a cup warmer, it is really not very efficient. If you like warm cups, better to just run them under hot water for a few seconds. But these are relatively minor issues. When you add up the superb aesthetics, the delicious taste of the coffee and espresso produced and the fine design and technology features of this appliance, the Philips 1200 Automatic Espresso Maker has certainly earned a full five stars and my strong recommendation.

I finally get it set up, complete the water test, set the water hardness and make a drink - not even a little bit tasty! To be expected, there is a warning to brew a few before actually making one to drink. I had some cheap coffee in the pantry so I used that up to make a few cups then I switched to some wonderful beans that my son had roasted. I absolutely love the ability to make the drink straight from the beans instead of having to use grounds and Iâd highly recommend using this option - I tried grounds a couple times and ended up with a mess inside the machine and grounds all in my cup.I canât seem to get the steam wand to make any froth, all I ever get is just hot oat milk. Iâm not a big fan of the foam anyway, and my coffeehouse orders always ask to leave it out but I decided to give it a couple tries and have never been able to make it happen. I do like the way the milk steams though, I get the perfect temp every time. I think my teenage son has used this more than I have because it makes hot water so fast, heâs been making hot cocoa for himself every morning.I am by no means a coffee connoisseur so this machine does the job. Iâve been able to make my own drinks each morning and skip the trips to the coffeehouse, but I donât feel that what Iâm making at home is the same quality as what I get from there. However, I do like saving the money so thatâs plus. I wish the water tank was bigger so we didnât have to refill it as often and I wish it had come with the water filter. If youâre looking for a fancy espresso machine this is definitely not the one for you, but if you are a regular joe like me just wanting to save on the trips to the coffeehouse this will get the job done. The customizable features are really convenient and much appreciated.

The Philips Automatic Espresso Machine is pretty good, the machine helped to clear up some space on our counter. Originally we were using one machine for coffee another for espresso. The nice thing with this is you can brew espresso or coffee. There is the container up top that you place coffee beans in, however there is also a small little compartment in the middle up top that you can place a scoop of pre-ground coffee. The beans can be used to brew espresso or coffee. There is a lot of programmability, there is the simple brew settings on the face such as amount of grounds or water, in the grounds container there is a grind knob. In the manual there is also a few other programmable options such as water temperature and a larger amount of water for example. The manual definitely gives a lot of information, but there is a couple things you may skip over based on your machine, since there are several options available but they use the same manual for each. I do wish they give a little more information in terms of setting up the grind settings based on yours, I know the machine is set to adjust after a few grinds, but telling you espresso beans light roast is good between these grind setting, medium roast between these settings and dark roast between these settings. Give you an idea what is in the ballpark for what you are brewing. I looked up a couple videos on line to give me a better understanding to dial it in. Could help some individuals in terms of setup.Once I got everything dialed in I have enjoyed the machine. There is a little compartment that catches the grounds that you can easily remove to dump the grounds. The water container slides out from the front so it is easy to remove, refill and place back in the machine with the location of this container. I mostly drink iced beverages myself, I do occasionally steam my milk, but I don't do any fancy art. The wand was fine, easily removable to clean, which I can say the same for the brew group. You can easily remove it from a panel hidden by the water tank, you can simply take it out rinse under the tap.Overall this is a good automatic brewer, which can definitely get better the more you understand it. Taking a little time to understand the tool you are working with can help to create a better beverage, I do think opting for the milk frothing cup would be the better option unless you really want to get fancy with your milk, but if you're looking for an automated machine, just opt for the additional options. But with what this machine is, it's great, I would just suggest into opting for a couple options to make it more automated.

The taste and aroma are consistently excellent, no matter the chosen drink.
Itâs not the fastest espresso maker but it can make a good latte. One thing that bothered me immediately is that it doesnât come with the filter that it says to use, I just didnât install one and its worked good so far, but it didnât say it was optional so I feel like the instructions should say it is optional or the filter should be included in the box.The bean grind has a setting 1-12 and it says you should use it for a few months before adjusting it as they believe it is set to the bet setting, so I trusted them and when I set the âbean strengthâ to 3 lights and the water level to one light the strength comes out just perfect.I prefer americanos so I tried the coffee button with three lights on the bean setting and three lights on the water setting; I have a ... MoreItâs not the fastest espresso maker but it can make a good latte. One thing that bothered me immediately is that it doesnât come with the filter that it says to use, I just didnât install one and its worked good so far, but it didnât say it was optional so I feel like the instructions should say it is optional or the filter should be included in the box.The bean grind has a setting 1-12 and it says you should use it for a few months before adjusting it as they believe it is set to the bet setting, so I trusted them and when I set the âbean strengthâ to 3 lights and the water level to one light the strength comes out just perfect.I prefer americanos so I tried the coffee button with three lights on the bean setting and three lights on the water setting; I have a 6oz coffee cup that fits this just right, otherwise I need a larger coffee mug and run it twice. This makes a nice strong cup of coffee that I find quite tasty. There is also a pre ground spot that you can put one scoop in for a cup of coffee, serving decaf makes the most sense for this. It likes to have the beans and water tray emptied when you first turn it on and wont run until you do. The water reservoir lasts for a bit but will stop right in the middle of making your shot or espresso if it needs more versus know if it can finish the shot before. So Iâve gotten into the habit of checking the water before I start anything. The frothier is nice, if slow. I really like ability to steam the milk, I wish when you clicked the steam it would prepare it and then when you hit the play button it would start the steam but instead you hit play and it takes 10 seconds to start steaming and so you kind of just have to hold the milk there waiting for it to start.Overall, this makes a great latte, americano, coffee, or whatever other drink you want, it is a little slow but it gets the job done and at home isnât necessarily where I need speed.
The Philips 1200 Series Espresso Machine is a great entry level coffee machine for individuals interested in something other than single serve coffee makers. The machine setup is pretty much plug and brew with only a small amount of setup required. The instructions provided are very through and I would suggest reading completely prior to use. The manufacture website referenced in the manual is also a great resource for the product as it contains videos on using as well as maintenance. One thing to advise is the 1200 series does not come pre-packaged with a AquaClean filter cartridge, so that may be something you would like to purchase with the machine. One thing to advise is the 1200 series does not come pre-packaged with a AquaClean filter cartridge, so that may be something you would like to purchase with the machine. Once setup the machine will cycle up and you are ready to brew your first cup of espresso. You will need to brew 5-10 cups of espresso to season the machine upon initial setup. Brewing espresso and coffee is as simple as the touch of a button. You can select from a single cup of espresso, or coffee or you can brew two espressos at a time or two coffees at a time (you have to swap in a different cup in between). Once you have selected you beverage to brew you can adjust the strength and cup size, which is remembered for future brews. The machine will grind the beans and brew your chosen beverage type in only a few minutes. For those who like a latte the attached milk frother is easy to use and simple to clean. The entire machine is actually easy to clan the drip tray and grounds bin are dishwasher safe and nicely designed for ease of use. The internals are also easy to access and disassemble quickly for easy clean up. The one thing that I would have preferred would have been a more sturdy material used for the water reservoir as it is a little too flexible when transporting from the machine to the sink and back. Overall this is a great entry level espresso machine.
While the Philips 1200 Series Fully Automatic Espresso Machine can definitely brew a cup of coffee, I found the machine lacking in many areas that, essentially, keeps me going back to my previous machine. To begin, I spent about 15 minutes after opening the box and putting everything together trying to find the water filter that goes in the water reservoir. I couldn't find it and figured there must have been some packing error. When I went online to try and chat with or email someone at Philips, I could only find a phone number and, at 5:30 PM central time, their customer support line was no longer open (missed it by a half hour). When I went online to try and chat with or email someone at Philips, I could only find a phone number and, at 5:30 PM central time, their customer support line was no longer open (missed it by a half hour). As I was reading through the instructions (more on that later), I stumbled upon the first page, which folded in on itself (unlike the rest of the document, which was formatted like a regular booklet). in that page, I found a packing list that compared the various Philips machines and, lo and behold, this particular model does not ship with the water filter. Aargh. Luckily, I found one online for next day delivery, but considering the cost of the machine, I found it very odd that it did not include the filter that it tells me to install in the initial setup directions.Speaking of the directions, the initial setup instructions were all in graphical icons without any words or descriptions. Additionally, those icons were rather small and hard to see. Essentially, I had to search online to find a video that demonstrated how to initially set up the machine. The video was from Philips itself and it was well done, so kudos for the online directions. The printed booklet, however, was pretty much useless for me, though. The initial setup was a little more convoluted than I was used to, but as this is my first cappuccino/espresso bean grinding machine, I suppose that may be normal. I thought it was pretty neat that it included a test strip for me to determine the hardness of my tap water to program the machine appropriately. Not sure how much of a difference that makes in brewing coffee, but it did make me feel as though the machine has something figured out that I would never have even asked about. Beyond that, the operation of the machine is not too difficult, but again, I had to refer to an online video to figure things out as the instructional manual really was of little help.As far as the actual brewing is concerned, the machine works well and is kind of slick, for lack of a better expression. One annoying thing I noticed, however, is that every time I turn the machine on (it has a power saving feature that turns itself off after a given period of time), it feels compelled to spit out a bit of water from the spouts. Not a lot of water, mind you, and there is a basin that catches it, but I still found that kind of annoying, especially if I already had my cup under the dispenser as it winds up having some plain 'ole water dumped in it first.Compared to the machine I currently use with pre-packaged plastic cups of ground coffee, this machine seems to take longer to brew the coffee. Additionally, even at the largest cup setting, the machine only brews just barely a half cup. Maybe my coffee cups are a lot bigger than what the machine was initially designed for, but I found myself having to brew twice in order to reasonably fill one standard coffee cup. There is an option to program the machine to the maximum brewing serving, but I never made it that far. Serving/brewing temperature was appropriate for me. Given the double spigots, the machine can brew two cups at once, but I am hard pressed to figure out how that would benefit me. It's more of a novelty feature than anything I would actually use on a daily basis. The frothier seemed to work just fine.At the end of the day, as much as I thought this was going to be really neat with grinding my own beans (thus producing "fresher" coffee drinks), the implementation was simply not there for me with this machine and I found myself going back to my previous machine because it brews faster and actually fills up my cup without me having to do any special programming. If someone is looking for a machine that grinds your beans and makes an awesome cup of coffee, I am not sure this is the best machine. As this was my first machine like this, however, I have no point of reference, so I am not sure if all espresso/cappuccino machines are like this or not. Regardless, I still prefer my older instant brew machine for making coffee and other specialty drinks (as my current machine has a frothier as well). If grinding fresh beans becomes a must for me, I am thinking I would try a different machine to see if the implementation is any different or better.
As an avid coffee drinker, itâs harder to get a good cup of coffee than one might think. Whether you go for the gentle smooth, almost silky cup of joe from Dunkin Donuts, or the specialty blends of the flavorful roasts of a Starbucks brand, itâs important to start ones morning off with a cup that motivates you to check the emails you left unread from the day before. So, when I was notified that the "Philips 1200 Series Fully Automatic Espresso Machine with Milk Frother" was on its way, I ran out and stocked up on a new supply of flavored creamers, milk, and grounded coffee, as I was preparing to sample everything this machine could do to make a holistic thorough review. First, Iâll start with the pros.Itâs a seamless addition to the stainless steel and black kitchen supplies I already own. It fits right into a nice snug space on my countertop. There is still room between the top of the machine and under the cabinets that allows me to insert the coffee beans and ground coffee as desired. I actually have kitchen appliances now that do not fit under that space, so this is a win in my book. The clean flat icons that light up when in operation makes the machine also easy to read, and less overwhelming to operate, similar to some new appliances when taking them straight out of the box. However, I was pleasantly surprised that after a quick flip through the instruction manual, and a 60 second YouTube video to ensure I was using the frother correctly, I was good to go and had my first espresso in hand. Now, the actual result of the quality of my brew has been different depending on the drink I am making. When brewing coffee, I made a few cups with whole coffee beans and then a few cups with ground coffee. The ground coffee actually gave me a bolder taste. This was surprising, as I assumed the beans would be stronger. However, the espressos tasted like that of my local coffee shop. I feel the milk frother makes all the difference. It's a great step up from the my Keurig, and was pretty consistent with every cup I made. Also, looking at the market price for this machine compared to others on the market, it's actually rather affordable for its features. I have friends with espresso machines who have expressed spending more money for theirs, and the Philips 1200-Series working just as well or superior in some areas.Regarding the cons, Iâll say that the machine is very loud. I didnât expect that when operating the frother. I literally would have to either shout over the machine to my family in the living room, or just repeat myself once it was finished frothing. In the mornings, I tend to close the bedroom door before brewing a cup to not wake my Wife, or just wait until the afternoon to avoid making so much noise early in the morning. Personally, itâs not a deal breaker but definitely caught me off guard when first operating the machine. I am also not used to a machine requiring so much maintenance. The instructions spoke about cleaning the machine weekly and cleaning the steam wand after every use. I usually get a cup of coffee on the go, so adding some time for maintenance within my regimen will take some getting used to. Another area I was a little confused by was that it did not come with a cup for the frother. I used a cup from another machine I own, which actually comes with a cup. It actually makes me wonder if this was just a miss during fulfillment, but I donât see a cup in advertisements, or images, so I am assuming this machine does not come with a cup. Not a huge strike against the machine, but a bit of an inconvenience.Overall, I think itâs all worth it. It will be a great addition to your at-home coffee corner with some noted adjustments. You'll need to play with the grinding settings to ensure your cups of coffee or espresso are resulting in a robust flavorful brew. You may also need to invest in a few espresso cups and a cup for milk frothing. With this Philips 1200 Series espresso machine, you can save some money on your daily coffee run and give the Baristas a break. Since I now have my own machine, Iâm very intrigued to see what other coffee based drinks I can stir up in my very own kitchen. For the convenience (and for my wallet), I can say my Mondays just got better!3.5/5
In the years I have spent as a product reviewer, I have developed a palate for espressos and the machines that can produce a good cup of one. I wanted a unit that I could have in my office to share with my coworkers or to help bridge those long hour days. The cubic space requirement from the 1200 would allow me to place it on my credenza without having a monstrous device hanging out. Whether on a cabinet or credenza, the Philips 1200 is a savvy sleek unit that screams distinguished. The button interface is user friendly and quite intuitive. That said, though, this Philips 1200 Series Espresso Machine is not, I repeat is not, super easy to use, to set up, or even to maintain. I would not recommend this espresso maker to anyone who minds being meticulous. If you do not mind being meticulous, the 1200 will produce a wonderful espresso. The ceramic grinder is nifty, and through trial and error, adjusting it will make and produce a superior grind that delivers well. The prep time and clean up are something that the user must factor into their schedule. The milk frother is honestly my favorite part of this machine. It is easy to use and clean up after. I rated this machine a four star, though, because I would have liked to see two additions. First, I read in other reviews prior to receiving it that the 1200 did not come with a filter, so I ordered one in advance, just more money on top of this. I am not sure if it will run without the brand specific filter, I will assess that in the weeks to come. Then the level of attention that I must dote upon this machine before, during, and after use put it out of contention for me to use in my office. I believe this is a wonderful device; it just needs to be for the right user in the right setting.
