They finally did it. There's a sizable constituency that have been sewing avy pockets on the outside of porter packs for the last 10+ years, so it's nice that Hyperlite finally did it themselves. Awesome execution, and the avy pocket also fits a pair of skins or hardboot bindings, so all the snowy things can be kept outside the main compartment. It's also pretty convenient to be able to expand the Headwall to accommodate extra stuff beyond a minimalist touring kit.

Used this to hike Section H of the PCT this summer. The bugs were horrible but the pack was a dream. Super light weight and carried everything I could ask for and more.

Fits everything you need a multi day ski tour. The seperate avi kit pocket is key and hard to find on larger volume packs. Can also use on single day tours.

This is the bag I've been waiting for. I used to ski with the Prism having my avy gear inside (less than ideal) but it was my favorite fitting and functionality pack I had ever used. No with the HW55 it takes this to another level needing to make no sacrifice and more room.
I used the headwall this season for some overnight trips to the Cascades and day trips in Colorado. Super impressed! I've found a pack to last many years. What I like: It's simple, and comfortable! I can fit days worth of winter gear for objectives requiring glacier travel and steep snow climbing, including carrying skis/board/boots on the pack. I was around 60+ lbs for the approach on multiple days and never had shoulder or hip pain. The pack compacts really well for day/peak tours and fits tight to the back for good maneuverability on the ski out. I have had 11 days with this pack in all weather conditions and it had held up really well, and I really don't take it easy on my gear. What I don't like: Access to the internal compartment takes a tad longer, ... MoreI used the headwall this season for some overnight trips to the Cascades and day trips in Colorado. One solution is to plan your layers wisely and carry a small water bottle on the exterior. Definitely not a deal breaker, especially when considering how weather resistant the packs are.The Fit: I am a large and have a 20+ ish torso. When it arrived, it seemed just a touch big, but when loaded its just right. Remember that these packs are meant to be overloaded relative to their size, so a 55 will carry more than you think. Trust the chart, give HMG a call if you have questions.100% would recommend to friends, family, and any mountain enthusiast.
Amazing design, carry, comfort, etc. Very much looking forward to day trips and bigger missions into the seasons to come. Nice work team. Bring on the snow!
I was looking for a dedicated pack for back country in the San Juan’s. This pack dies just that. The external pocket fits my probe and shovel with room to spare. The difference in weight is amazing. The reduction in weight doesn’t sacrifice any features.
It's still too early to ski with it and test it out properly, but the pack seems awesome so far. Plenty of room, great construction, and thoughtful features for it's in use cases.Only two things stand out that leave me wanting:* There's a whole lotta straps! Excellent for big missions and when it's loaded up, but they can be fluttery when not in use or at the far lengths of their extension. Would be nice to see some included strap management in the form of them being removable. Some elastics will do the job though.* The attachment points on the sides for the roll top to clip to are pretty high up - if the pack isn't full it probably makes more sense to clip the roll top to itself so it's not flopping around, but having more adjustment on where the sides can ... MoreIt's still too early to ski with it and test it out properly, but the pack seems awesome so far. It's likely this will get upgraded to 5 stars after actual use.
everything I could want and more. So far it has only see rock climbing trips and a few alpine days. It just soaks up gear like crazy. It could be the one pack to end all packs. Love love love love love it. Can not wait for winter
Bought this pack for multiway backcountry tours this winter with the plan being to get two or three trips in with it. Super stoked to find out how versatile it is - with the roll-down top and side compression straps, it's ALSO a great pack for single day missions! Took it up yesterday for a six-hour trip and it was an absolute pleasure to carry. LIGHTweight and the fit is perfect. I measured at 19" (which is right on the border between Medium and Large) and went with the recommendation to size up. I was nervous that the city would be off, but it's just right.Overall, very happy with this pack.
