Disappointed

I was really disappointed with this pack. I tore a pretty significant hole in it on a day hike in Canyonlands NP on the second or third hike I took it on. We definitely weren't doing any canyoneering or anything beyond what I would considered mild exploring between boulders, and the tear happened when I turned and rubbed against a rock, which is a pretty normal thing to have happen when outdoors. It is very lightweight, and I continued to use it on backpacking trips (after Tyvec taping the hole) and it worked great as a stuff sack that doubled as a day pack for side trips. I really love Hyperlite Gear and plan to buy more but this one was not up to par for me.

Extremely light.

The goal is ultra light which is achieved. Very very nice. I use this to fit my -40F sleeping bag as a stuff sack and for a summit pack. Here are some areas to improve function but would add weight.Top closer could be better, it tends to open up when full. A plastic edge would help.Adding a chest strap (sternum strap) which you can order separately.Adding a thin waist strap can sometime be nice.

Extremely not durable unfortunately

Bought this for a desert canyoneering trip that would require some waist-deep wading. Seemed perfect given the waterproof nature and the price was right. Prior to that trip, I used it twice for some light hiking (i.e., easy nature walking) in the desert. The night before my canyoneering trip I inflated the sack to ensure it was airtight. I spotted a tiny abrasion, so I patched it up. Then I spotted another, so I patched that up too. This happened for the next half hour and I realized there were far too many tiny tears in the delicate fabric to patch on my own with what I had. I really was excited about the product but the fabric is way too delicate. It was essentially useless for my canyoneering trip; I needed it to be airtight. Will stick to Hyperlite's classic ... MoreBought this for a desert canyoneering trip that would require some waist-deep wading. Seemed perfect given the waterproof nature and the price was right. Good, but useless without a chest strap
19 January 2020

This isn't a serious backpack. It doesn't carry much, or well. So it's hard to criticise it compared to a real pack, and that's expected---it's really a big stuffsack that can occasionally serve as a backpack. But it's simply useless without a chest strap: the shoulder straps just fall off my shoulders. Easy fix, but I think they really should include one, and I will knock off a star for that. I still like it, though---it's a great carry-on for airplane travel.

If you want a slightly smaller size
7 October 2023

I purchased it as an attack rucksack. It's very light yet sturdy. However, I think a slightly smaller size would have been better. There are limits to how small it can be with a roll top, and I want to be able to carry drinks and smartphones outside.

I have used Stuff Sack for grocery shopping, used it on hundreds of hikes and runs, and taken it on dozens of trips. Stuff pack is strong and dependable. I've trusted this backpack to carry camera equipment and also two laptops, using it as my carry-on. I've carried liters of water, milk, and other heavy groceries in it across town. It's so light you'll find yourself grabbing it to take along "just in case."Obviously, you put flat surfaces or soft items at the back. Pack it properly and the weight distribution achieved by the excellent design of the shoulder straps makes carrying even heavy loads comfortable.Whether you're carrying electronics or papers and books, waterproofness often more important than any other feature. To me, it's not worth losing a smart phone or camera because my bag isn't waterproof.Stuff pack is feather light, but more durable than daypacks weighing 10 times as much. The bag is solid in terms of its structure. Over time, like any material, the super lightweight cuben material will become worn in places, but unlike others materials, the cuben won't tear. Simply locate a worn spot, apply Tenacious Tape (Duct tape works just as well) from the *inside*, and you're good to go. In this way, you can infinitely extend the life of this bag without degrading its good looks. (I could could write a whole essay about the pack's good looks, but I'll leave that for another time.)Strength plus ease of maintenance plus ultra-lightweight plus waterproofness equals a pack that's a superior choice for travel.A great companion to the Stuff Pack is HMG's Summit Pack. In my review for Summit Pack, I explain how the two packs complement one another.

Perfect bag for essentialists
15 June 2023

This bag is discreet, light weight, versatile, and takes up no space when not in use. It is now the bag I use majority of the time. In conjunction with Patagonia Lightweight Black Hole duffle, my travel kit is now complete as well.

Perfect bag for side trips and summit scrambles
26 June 2018

I love using my stuff pack in town just as much as in the mountains! On outdoor adventures the most common time I use it is going to check out epic sunsets. I set up camp and then take the essentials (a camera, warm layer of clothing, headtorch etc.) in stuff pack...usually to scramble to a small summit or to a sweet viewpoint. When I'm in 'expedition mode' I use it to pack my sleeping bag or other warm layers of clothing for the evening. In town I often use it for food shopping and I've started using this as my carry-on luggage pack when flying. I wouldn't use it in heavy rain but it's awesome in really light rain and snow.

Hi,Hope you are well. Not long ago I bought the Metro Pack Black for my boyfriend for his birthday. It was the ultimate gift becausehe had one of those backpacks earlier and he used it nearly every day. He was extremely happy about it butit turned out that when it started raining the dye in the backpack stained his t-shirt.We were quite shocked because we are big fans of Hyperlite and we didn" t expect such a flaw. I have sent thebackpack to you and got a refund straight away - thank you for that.Do you think that it would be safe to buy the white version? I would still like to have this product but withoutworrying that it might ruin any more clothes. The other thing is that when I was buying the backpack I was visiting the US and now I am back in ... MoreHi,Hope you are well. Not long ago I bought the Metro Pack Black for my boyfriend for his birthday. Wondering about quality recently
20 July 2021

Ordered this Stuff Pack for a trek this summer, didn't arrive in time, so I may be a little picky.Looking at the pack, it will work fine for my primary purpose of storing gear inside my bigger pack. As a day pack, the closures clips on my bag were not even, and even with the adjustability built in to the clips, the closure clips are about an inch off center, is this standard or was this pack a"second" that slipped through due to high volume. (Not huge, but enough to be annoying, and at the price point I expected better.) I recommend the pods highly, but at this point I can't recommend the Stuff Pack - too many other products on the market that provide similar function. If mine was a flaw, I will revisit the review.
