Short version: if you haven't already, BUY this game! (And the DLCs they're releasing too.) Long version: Like pretty much everyone else, I bought this game based on Eiji Aonuma's appearance at the Nintendo Direct where he said this game would tide us over until the Breath of the Wild sequel came out. Not having played the previous Hyrule Warriors game I had no idea what to expect. So I was VERY pleasantly surprised when I discovered that this is a TERRIFIC game. It builds flawlessly on the BotW mythos but does so in such a way that actually increases my appreciation for the main game. The missions and scenarios this game brings you are challenging and fun, yes there are a lot of them but they do build on each other, and unlike some action/adventure games I've played, this one actually has a great storyline. It's even better if you've played BotW and understand the context behind everything that's happening. The controls are a little different, but after the first few minutes you won't even notice. The only thing to really know about this game is that unlike BotW, where you can jump in and out anytime without having to invest a lot of time and attention (if you've only got a couple of minutes you can go defeat a Bokoblin camp or fight a Lynel and then that's it), Age of Calamity wants your attention for more involved missions and scenarios, so my preference is to play this game when I can spare more time and attention, and then leave BotW in for "regular" use so I can get away for five minutes now and again. (All that being said: come on, Mr. Aonuma, release the BotW sequel!)

I bought this game for one big reason - to explore the story of Breath of the Wild more. I can say that the story telling does a lot to expand on that, but I also had some fun with the combat. It’s fast and frantic, and that’s not something you can always say about Zelda. While it’s improved over the first Hyrule Warriors, it does have performance opportunities. If there is a high volume of enemies on screen (which is often) there will be a good amount of chugging and screen tearing in the performance. I have had the game actively bottom out due to everything going on in battle. Overall when its going well it’s a fun shack and slash, but performance issues can be a factor.

I really appreciate the visual style, voice acting, music, animations, and locations featured in this game. It is 100% Breath of the Wild style in terms of the above, the gameplay is very different though. And that is to be expected because it is a 'Warriors' game. I do not care for the 'Warriors' style of gameplay, but I stuck with it because I love the Breath of the Wild aesthetics, music, map, and characters. We get to see a lot more of Princess Zelda and the Champions, as well as Impa, Purah, and Robbie. I do not particularly like that this is an 'alternate timeline' style story that does not directly lead to the events of Breath of the Wild 100 years later, but I appreciate the intense level of detail and additional character developement the game offers. I recommend this game if you enjoyed Breath of the Wild, even if you don't like the 'hack and slash' play style, the flavor and cutscenes, as well as the battles themselves are totally worth it. I hope you enjoy this game!

Good game if you've played Breath of the Wild and want to know more about the kingdom of Hyrule and some of the characters one hundred years earlier, or to see how things may have panned out differently with the knowledge of impending doom. It has some things similar to and some things very different from the first Hyrule Warriors game. Its hard to say which is actually the better. Age of Calamity has the better story and its main campaign battles are a good two to three times as long, while Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition has much more post-story content and is more quickly paced for a mobile system like the Switch. Age of Calamity's graphics are direct copies from Breath of the Wild, so if you like the cel-shaded look you'll appreciate Age of Calamity; if not you may think the first game has the better graphics. Pros: * Not very complicated gameplay. Just keep mashing buttons until enemies go down with occasional dodging and item use. * Excellent story that melds well with the Breath of the Wild events. * Many video cutscenes, far more than in Breath of the Wild, that help tell the story outside of battles. * Does not require the hundreds of hours to 100% the game as the first Hyrule Warriors does. Con: * Too easy. On most quests, a competent player is in little risk of death at the Normal difficulty level (a Hard and Very Hard level exist for those wishing a greater challenge.) * Noticeable frame rate drops during rainstorms or when many Lizafos are on screen at once and all spit water, ice, fire, or lightning at the same time * Questionable decision by developers to map jump and dodge to the same button. Many players experience "misjumps" when they merely mean to dodge when too close to a wall. * Very poor camera positioning which too often gets stuck behind a tree or other object obstructing the view. Assuming all available sidequests are done, playtime of main campaign is approximately 60 hours. To complete all post-story sidequests the playtime extends to 80-100 hours, depending how many hidden chests and Koroks were not discovered in main story missions on first attempt.
I've never been big into the Warriors games. Honestly, I never really knew about them until the original Hyrule Warriors and its Zelda theming caught my attention. So I played the original Hyrule Warriors and...I found it kinda meh. I found Age of Calamity on sale and despite not being enthralled with the first one, the Zelda fan in me could not resist a Breath of the Wild prequel. I could get through the Warriors gameplay if it meant being able to play through the events of the calamity. However, in a table-turning playthrough I found the gameplay in Age of Calamity to be rather addicting while the story ended up being just... meh. Age of Calamity's biggest strength is how it draws from Breath of the Wild and uses the exact same assets, design, and presentation and then builds an entirely different game around them. You can tell that the team at Koei Tecmo held great respect for, and got help from, Nintendo's Zelda team. It was good enough to get me through the first few missions until the Warriors gameplay clicked. Then it clicked hard and I wanted to upgrade all my weapons, learn character combos, and take on challenges more than I cared about how the story ended. Maybe I need to go back and give the first Hyrule Warriors another shot.
I have played Hyrule Warriors the first one, it was such an amazing and addictive game. This one is a whole another level, it takes inspiration directly from Breath of the Wild’s settings and the peeps. I really enjoyed it. Although I do wish it supports online for whatever mission is too difficult or just take them on with a friend for fun, or with anyone really. I hope maybe the next Hyrule Warriors, they’d support online play functionality. Gameplay: it only plays at 30fps, although it dips in some really heavy commotion, but it doesn’t suffer too gravely. Story: it takes place and time before BOTW, I believe. Value: I think it’s one of those hack and slash game if you’re really into it, and you like Zelda? This is for you: It’s a fun game!
I absolutely love this game. It has lots of opportunities to upgrade your skills and your weapons. GO SEE THE BLACKSMITH OFTEN! If your having trouble or just bored with the game just change the difficulty setting in options. Even better, you can change options per battle. The have 4 difficulty levels from easy to very hard to pick from. Just click on -X- and use your toggle to change the difficulty level. Then just hit -B- and you're ready to rock, lol!
I will preface with the fact I got this on sale for like $30. Half the normal price, so of course it’s more of a value for me. That said, this game is lots of fun, I don’t have an issue with slowdown and frame rate like I’ve read in reviews, maybe because I have a newer switch model. Gameplay is over the top combat, taking out literally hundreds of enemies every few minutes. There are actual challenges to kill 500 enemies within a time limit. The super charged powers make you wonder how Link and the other heroes ever lost against Gannon but I haven’t finished the end yet…maybe they explain. You are insanely over powered and crushing enemies. At the same time combat is very familiar to BOTW and shares the same graphics. My kid likes seeing what happened before BOTW ... MoreI will preface with the fact I got this on sale for like $30. Half the normal price, so of course it’s more of a value for me. My kid likes seeing what happened before BOTW and the story is well done. Looks like Nintendo had a hand in the cut scenes. Very good. This is a perfect game to play before BOTW2 comes out…someday. The gameplay is much easier than BOTW so my young kids both enjoy it.
I have always enjoyed the Dynasty Warriors games, and I like the Legend of Zelda, so mixing the two is a no-brainer for me. Admittedly, I thought this was a remake of the Wii U Hyrule Warriors game, with some extra content. Instead it uses the Breath of the Wild aesthetic and has a completely new story. Not having played BotW, I cannot say if it follows anything with that plot or not. That said, you get a mix of characters from the various races to be found in Zelda games (Zora, Goron, Gerudo, etc), as well as Link, Zelda and some others to play with, and the ability to upgrade them by collecting items in battle to use at various points on the overworld map. Repetitive gameplay, but that is normal for these games, and I find it fun.
if you want to play a game like breath of the wild, go play breath of the wild. this game is nothing like it, aside from having the same characters. it's a hack-and-slash game that involves mashing about two buttons repeatedly until the level is over. HOWEVER!! what it lacks in gameplay, it makes up for a hundredfold in graphics and story. the color scheme and locations will be familiar for botw players, and while it doesn't have the polished look of the iconic game, it's still very nice to look at. the story is emotional, perfectly timed, and thought-provoking. the huge number of beautiful, interesting cutscenes made this game worth it for me; honestly, it's like a movie with some battles you fight in-between scenes. the story is squarely centered on zelda, and it ... Moreif you want to play a game like breath of the wild, go play breath of the wild. this game is nothing like it, aside from having the same characters. it's a hack-and-slash game that involves mashing about two buttons repeatedly until the level is over.
