This has a good thickness for winter (too hot for other seasons) and a good length (about half that of an Icebreaker flexi chute or a regular buff). It stays up around the face well enough for my large head (my hat size is usually L or XL). However, when resting around the neck, it feels a little too tight compared to other fleece neckwarmers. (My preference is for a somewhat loose neckwarmer that can stay up when needed.) For a clothing item that I'll be breathing into quite often, however, the antibacterial property of 100% merino does feel attractive.

I have had one of these for over 15 years and it's still perfect but I like it so much it's good to have a second one. Navy is a lovely colour. The chute is slightly different from the old version which had a hidden seam. The newer one has a thick seam down one edge so I feel the quality is a bit lower hence 4 star rather than 5. Such a useful product that I still highly recommend. Everyone needs at least one of these

I purchased the Apex and the regular Flexi Chute together. They arrived in the worst packaging job I have ever seen, AWFUL! The Apex arrived on the hard cardboard carrier crumpled into the tightest ball one could squeeze, obviously intentional. About a one inch stain on the Apex. The long regular Flexi was weaved so tightly on its carrier I could hardly remove without damaging it. Both just thrown into a light cardboard sleeve for shipping. After almost ten years, eight pullovers and ten shirts my purchases with this company is over. Icebreaker is not the company it used to be years ago.
I like buying the patterned Apex chutes, as they are thicker (despite being the same gram weight) than the solid colour chutes. In our -30 to -45 degree Celcius winters, we need all the coverage and insulation on the face you can get! I was hoping these heather grey ones would be thicker like our patterned ones, but it wasn't. It's the same feel as the solid colour ones. Plus, my kids prefer colours or patterns.
I wear this EVERYWHERE and ALL THE TIME. It keeps my neck so nice and warm that it helps regulate my overall temperature and keeps it quite balanced and comfortable. It's not itchy, it's not terribly tight so it's loose enough to adjust yet not loose enough to make it feel useless. It's also versatile. When I forget hair ties and need my hair pulled back I can just use it like a headband and no hair comes in my face. During windy and winter months I'm wearing it and keeping much warmer without massive bundles of uneven scarves. It's lightweight and I forget that I'm wearing it, more often than not. It's just that comfortable.
Ugh. My last Icebreaker Chute is the bees knees. It is soft and reversible. I am so over-the-moon in love with the new color, curry, so I decided to treat myself but the new chute is not as wonderful as the last one I purchased. The curry chute has a size tag (one size, so I ask, why a tag?) and the really scratchy tag is the washing instructions in multiple languages. Sure, I can cut the tags off, but I am still left with scratchy "tag stubble" because the tag is stitched securely into the product seam and I fear the garment would be compromised if I cut the threads.Good material, good construction. I am confident it will be warm, but this one I have to make sure I put on the right side out.
I had a double layer neck gaiter from Icebreaker for years. It was a present and I used it continually. Light, warm, confortable and apparently indestructible. I recently lost it and my heart was broken. So bought a new one. The Apex Chute seemed to be the same model so I went for it. the construction is slightly different. The fabric is slightly thinner and it is less tight on the neck. All in all a good product but, after one week wearing it (!), the fabric is starting to be slightly worn off on the side of the neck gaiter that touches my beard. I had the same beard with the old one, and it looked like new after several years of use. It's not bad, just not as good as it used to be.

I like to wear this when I'm wearing a puffer vest, so that the collar doesn't scratch against my neck/face. I also love that I can easily slip this up over my head and wear it as a headband/beanie when doing chores. The downside is that it's rather loose around my neck and doesn't look snug like it does in photos, and it's definitely too loose to cover my nose/face (I'm a petite female). I can live with that though, as that's not how I intend to wear it. I trialled both the Apex and the longer Flexi chute, and I found this one to be much more practical.
