This is a fibre board covered in veneer to look like a butchers block and not a real butchers block. The underside does not have the veneer but all other sides do.It's a decent product, I'm using as a long office desk and not a kitchen counter top. I give this 4 stars because the price is decent value and real butchers blocks are more like double the price of this. But I think if I was doing a kitchen with this I'd use a different counter top. I'm not convinced the veneer on this would hold up for a long time in a kitchen environment and the hard wear experienced. Once scratched / peeled it is difficult to repair veneer to look good but with a true butchers block any scratches, gouges etc can be sanded but also add some character to the counter top. So keep that in ... MoreThis is a fibre board covered in veneer to look like a butchers block and not a real butchers block. Bought the 74” walnut/veneer to use as a desktop for my home office. Placed it on top of 2 Alex storage cabinets. Despite it being a countertop, the Karlby was finished on all 4 sides which was great (no exposed particle board on any sides on the desk — this isn’t the case for all ikea countertops). It does hang off the Alex cabinets a few inches, but I’m intending to use that space for cord management anyway. The top felt a little gritty so I used Minwax Paste Finishing wax with an old t-shirt. Still feels a tad rough but it’s much better.

Absolutely horrendous countertop you can waste you money on. Mind you if you believe it’s cheap, it’s not. For a small kitchen, I’ve purchased 3 of these and 1 butcher block in walnut. Absolutely ALL have such contrasting shade and impossible to cut straight fir hired professional that the entire project was a waste of time and money. With pro installation the cost is over $2,000 and trust me I should’ve went with literally anything else than this horrid waste. I will provide a picture later I’m just so disappointed in the entire situation I can’t bring myself to even look at the final project. It’s a veneer again; the joint will never look good, the strips included for edges are breaking at the touch. Utter waste of time and energy. Look elsewhere. Not a butcher ... MoreAbsolutely horrendous countertop you can waste you money on. Mind you if you believe it’s cheap, it’s not. We wanted to match the Karlby to an older IKEA bench top called the "Numerar", no longer manufactured. Numerar is solid wood vs Karlby, a wood veneer. The match is quite good, although the Karlby is greener in colour. We sanded back the factory finish on it and applied a tung oil product. Now the bench is more golden coloured like the Numerar. Sanding back was no worries, the veneer is 3mm or so thick. Cutting the product to size was also successful. The included instructions for the product are quite good in this regard, likewise for sealing cuts and joins with silicone. To achieve a good cut, use masking tape, a circular saw blade with lots of teeth, and set the saw cutting depth to only slightly more than the thickness of the product to get the best results. In addition to the silicone when joining tops we used bench top joiners to achieve greater strength. Karlby, as a veneer product, is lighter, less solid feeling, but won't split, or so they say. So far, so good.
This is a beautiful piece for a day, maybe two, but will quickly break your heart. It is definitely NOT made to be used- for ANYTHING. If you are looking for countertop as art to hang on your wall- this may work! It’s definitely NOT suitable to be used in any way- I repeat- do NOT put ANYTHING on it- nothing- EVER. Not even a cotton ball- seriously. It will immediately dent, scratch and the finish will start peeling. Do NOT wipe it -not with cleaner or furniture polish or a damp cloth. If it gets dusty you’ll just have to live with it because cleaning this in ANY way will ruin the finish. This is absolutely worthless for any practical purpose. It’s beautiful in the store- but will look terrible in less than 3 days if you attempt to use it for ANYTHING! It’s totally worthless for any purpose it might have been intended for. It IS a VERY expensive piece of JUNK.
PAINTER'S TAPE peeled off he veneer. We used painter's tape while adding a silicone seal around the edge of the drop in sink and when carefully pulling up the painter's tape, it peeled up the finish also. Unreal. The whole point of painter's tape. And since the pieces are already cut, IKEA won't take them back. Don't get me started on the STICKERS that cover the cut ends. Those were peeling back and breaking in the first week also. We're currently uninstalling and installing real butcher block. Save yourself the money and frustration and just do the same from the start. Don't let the kitchen planners sweet talk you. Not ALL pieces have to be IKEA.
We got the 72Ă—42 large counter top in Walnut. It's a nice finish, however it needed to be cut to size and re edged using the supplied "peel and stick" veneer edge band. After cutting to size, and attaching the edge banding (to which I was very skeptical of, however it was easier than making several little blocks of real walnut and gluing them) I used, and rolled said edge band on. It did not last. After wiping down the top with a damp rag to clean it, 3 sections bubbled. No amount of clamping would re-adhear them. So in the end the top came off. Went back to my garage and was pieced here and there with real wood and actual wood glue. I openly expect it to happen again to other section of the edge banding. Buyer beware if you have to cut it.
For the past eight months I have been trying to get IKEA to honor the warranty on the Karlby countertop they installed through their partnership with Traemond. Installation was in 2021. The countertop warped. I have spent hours on the phone during this time, and the case number has been changed six times so far. After five months they finally sent someone to my home who agreed the countertop should be replaced. Now, three months later, nobody answers my calls about this. I purchased an entire IKEA kitchen including appliances, and nobody returns my calls about this one problem. Not sure what to do now.
I bought this countertop less than a year ago and protected it with the treatment product IKEA sells. We have black water stains all around the sink. We were removing excess water after each usage and adding the treatment product on a regular basis, but it still happened. There's nothing we can do since it's not real wood. We can't sand it and protect it again. Quite expensive for the quality.
Wow- I now know ikeas definition for “different” shades. I don’t own a truck, so in order to pickup these countertops I was required to rent one. Upon cutting the countertops I realized I needed 18” more. So I purchase another walnut butcher block, rent a truck again and upon opening the box at home, I now have a oak colored butcher block and a walnut colored-with no way to match unless I trial and error staining now..which was the purpose of buying the walnut shade-so I didn’t have to stain. Long story short, Ikea says I now have to rent another truck and return the block I. Hope that I can exchange it for one that’s the same color. Had I known this was the process- I NEVER would have purchased these here. Save your self so much time, hassle, and awful customer ... MoreWow- I now know ikeas definition for “different” shades.
