I am not going to recount publicly the tactic I employed when putting this bed together to make it happen…because they could have killed me and were not safe. But, NOTHING was working and I’m a pro with ikea and have put together even the Brimnes bed solo with no issues. This was not an easy bed to build. This was not me. It was the engineering. There was a point where I needed the pieces to budge another 1/2 inch to catch something and nothing worked to budge them. Well, eventually they did , but, again, what I did IS NOT advised. I do believe it was more a miracle from above than what I did anyway. This bed SHOULD be simple as pie, but mine wasn’t. Wood expands and contracts so it could not be IKEAs fault, who knows? In any case, the value for the money is FABULOUS…assuming you can build yours to completion of course. It’s solid wood and this did surprise me. It’s nice. The grey is beautiful and matte, no gloss. The storage drawers under are loose, like….they do not connect to anything like brimnes drawers do. In some ways it’s annoying but, in my case, my room only fit the 2 drawer style bed bc mine is up against a wall, so it’s all I could do…this means, yes, there is a HUGE amount of wasted space on one side under my mattress. So, then the drawers being loose is great….I got mobile storage units to fill in those gaps and I am able to roll out the malm drawers to get to them. It’s not ideal, but I don’t waste space …so I put items for long term storage that I rarely access in them …behind my malms. My malms have my clothes ;). The value for the price is SUPERB. I installed alone, you can too. DO follow the directions super super close and do some YouTube or internet research first for a few tips and tricks. HAVE THE BED EXACTLY WHERE you want it as you build it if you can.IKEA : don’t make people buy the LUROY slats vs. the upgraded slats JUST BECAUSE THEY REQUIRE DELIVERY. It’s nuts. I had to buy the LUROY bc you wouldn’t offer this bed to be delivered without those and only those. I’ve had the LUROYs before and tbh, I hate them. My bed will be fine with these for awhile. But I know the others are ideal for long term.Oh and …for those who wonder : you can’t tell from looking at the bed that the storage drawers are loose, it appears that they are built in …the finished look of this combo is great.

First IKEA purchase for me. All the Malm bed boxes fit in the back of a Mazda CX-9 loaner car with the rear seats folded down. Assembly was straight forward.I did it solo... Just make some room. Takes a bit to put together but you save on the purchase price. Everything is pretty solid for the price. Lifting function to provide storage is excellent and hydraulics are truly primed. My only suggestion to IKEA is the following... Raise the price a little and include higher quality receivers and fasteners. The light aluminum is too soft and leans toward stripping and bending in the friction zone. With care it can be avoided. I'd just like the fastener mechanisms to be stronger than my wrist. All in, happy with the purchase.

King Size Bed Stability and Support. This should be a requirement in the "Good to know" section!
8 March 2023

I'm giving this a three star and here's why. While I think it this is a great bedframe IKEA marketing and design have missed the mark here. For one as a pretty big guy myself, I'm about 240 lbs. Regardless of the size of women I've had in my company I think this issue would have became apparent overtime just by myself. Essentially the middle support that holds the slats has had the clip fold and no longer sits on the headboard clip. Here's my gripe. On the order screen it says the middle support is included in the price. So why isn't your marketing team adding extra feet for support In the king size option? To that note why is your design and engineering team not pushing for that in the first place?Increase the King-Size bedframes cost by $20.00 ( for two feet ... MoreI'm giving this a three star and here's why. Love the look, but tricky to assemble!
28 November 2022

I love the look of the bed, we purchased it for our 4 year old as the big step out of her crib - but I have to say that attempting to put it together on my own today was a battle that I nearly lost. I call it day 1 of 2, as I'm only partly done - and it's all down to the challenge of connecting the side panels to the head & foot boards. I have put together numerous IKEA items in my day, but this one nearly broke me. The round discs that are used as connectors are new to me, and they are very hard to align for grip. It took me hours, a high degree of frustration (and hand pain), and eventually the help of my husband to complete (holding up the footboard). I'm hoping the rest of the task will be smooth sailing, but I wanted to note this as a downside to what otherwise ... MoreI love the look of the bed, we purchased it for our 4 year old as the big step out of her crib - but I have to say that attempting to put it together on my own today was a battle that I nearly lost. Perhaps an estimated time of assembly would be good to include in instructions, since it was drawn to look very simple.

Mostly straightforward assembly, sturdy and attractive design
21 May 2022

Purchased the queen version of the Malm platform bed with four underbed storage boxes. Took slightly longer than 3 hours for two people to assemble the bed frame and headboard, but we were meticulous in following the instructions and did all hardware tightening by hand (no power tools). This definitely is a two-person assembly, though, and there were one or two head-scratchers that had us pre-reading the next step to make sure we understood how it was all supposed to fit together. Believe the instruction manual. Very happy with the white stained oak finish. It's extremely attractive, and very solid. There was some damage to the underbed storage drawers which were packaged separately (though all shipped together by truck). Not good anymore
6 January 2023

I've been happily buying Malm beds for years. Finally upgraded - I thought - to this one, bc I wanted underbed storage. This Malm design is not good. It took HOURS to put together, bc the pieces simply don't fit well. The wood is thinner, the headboard constantly creaks and feels unstable even after tightening everything as much as I could. I got the Lonset slats and now my mattress just sits on top of the frame (not held in place), sliding around any time I move too much or make the bed. They raised the price for this?I gave a second star only bc the storage drawers are nice. But I'll never buy a Malm again.

Poor replacement for older Malm
13 February 2023

My daughter previously had a white Malm standard double bed, which was really low profile, sturdy and perfect for her room. However, when she bought a new IKEA mattress last year, we realised that the mattress sizes had changed leaving approx a 3cm gap around the mattress, which was irritating. As a result, we gave the original lovely Malm bed away and bought the new version. This has been a real disappointment. The mattress now sits snugly in the frame, but this is the only positive thing I can say. The bed fittings are not good quality and don’t sit flush as they should, hence making it feel far less sturdy/secure than the previous one. On an aesthetic note, it also looks less classy and, despite taking up slightly less floor space than the old frame, it now seems ... MoreMy daughter previously had a white Malm standard double bed, which was really low profile, sturdy and perfect for her room. On an aesthetic note, it also looks less classy and, despite taking up slightly less floor space than the old frame, it now seems to take over the room. Even on the lower level setting, the mattress stands way too high above the edge of the bed. Even if you prefer the height of the new version, I would still be wary of the poor quality fittings.

Queen Size bedframe
5 July 2022

Purchased the Queen size white frame recently for our spare room.It goes together fairly easily. The only thing that was a bit confusing was the cams that connect the frame sides to the ends. But once I figured it out, they worked fine. The bed feels strong. No squeaks. One other thing to be aware of.When changing sheets / making the bed, you need to lift the mattress up and OUT of the frame to get to the sides and underneath the mattress.Make sure you know this as mattresses can be heavy, and this can make changing sheets hard for some.If you don't have the strength to lift the mattress, then this design is not for you. It's something I did not consider until I had to make the bed for the first time.Hope this helps.

Sturdy and sleek
1 February 2023

A sibling of mine owned this bed frame years ago and recommended it to me when we were at our local IKEA since I was looking for one. When I bought it, the pieces were a little heavy but nothing too crazy. When it came time to building it, we finished in under an hour. I recommend having a screwdriver with different adjustable heads or just a smaller and regular sized screwdriver to make it easier. It's definitely better to build with two people than one person alone. Very sturdy but not too heavy once assembled. Did have to use a bit of force to get the finishing touches but it came out amazing. My sibling did make the comment that the bed is much sturdier and has added steps that ensure durability.
