After reading the reviews mentioning bottle jacks to hold the unit, I wasn't looking forward to replacing a 46 that we had installed 4 years ago.I read the instructions and discovered that you only need to disconnect the 'motor unit' from the retaining/levelling frame that is hanging from the sink.I lined up the motor unit approximately, rotated it a few degrees and it slipped into the retaining frame. The same would apply with installing a completely new one; Step 1, install to retaining/levelling frame below the sink. Step 2, rotate the motor unit into the frame. (All this is included in the instructions).

I bought this unit to replace a still working 14 year old Model 45 that had provided sterling service but was becoming worn out. The new unit has the same sink collar fitting and its waste outlet at the same position as the old Model 45 and is an easy substitution. Like the Model 45, the Model 46 ISE is a good entry-level unit, suitable for light-medium domestic use in a small household. The grinding unit is galvanised and there is no air switch. Guarantee is 2yrs. More expensive units come with an air switch, have stainless steel grinding units and have longer guarantees. The supplied fitting instructions are very clear with one exception at Step 7 'Discharge tube installation': the white plastic waste elbow supplied with the unit (called a 'discharge tube') comes ... MoreI bought this unit to replace a still working 14 year old Model 45 that had provided sterling service but was becoming worn out. This collar has to be fitted narrow end first over the end of the discharge tube after the metal flange plate has been slid onto the discharge tube. The rubber gasket then fits over the end of the discharge tube, rather than the other way around, so that the lip on the end of the tube sits in the groove inside the middle of the gasket. When the gasket is then mated to the opening in the side of the disposal unit, the blue collar then stops the flange plate sliding off the discharge tube as the securing bolts are tightened.

Firstly, this DOES NOT come with an air switch - I have checked with several branches of Screwfix who have checked their stock. Once fired up it worked a treat, and is quiet and efficient. Only time will tell how long it will last, but it is guaranteed for 2 years and if there are any issues I have confidence that Insinkerator will sort it out.

Great waste disposal
4 January 2023

I purchased this to replace an aged Evolution 100 which had broken and so far I'm very impressed, given the price difference. It was a like for like replacement in terms of fitting - I used the old waste attachment on the new unit, and it fitted onto the old sink attachment with no issues at all.I had not realised that this didn't come with an air switch, but as someone else pointed out, it's relatively straightforward to swap out one from an old unit, if you have that option. Otherwise, for the hassle and expense of getting an air switch separately, you're probably best to look at the 56.My reliability score comes from previous Insinkerator purchases, as it's a bit too soon to base it on this specific purchase.

Insinketator 46
10 November 2021

This is a good solid well built waste disposal unit. Outlet waste is NOT standard 1¹/² size. I got very frustrated as no one was able to supply wastepaper that fitted. After a week of pulling my hair out and contacting several plumbing merchants I found out a standard P bend did fit. It had a smaller than 40mm connector at one end!!! Nothing in instructions to highlight this. Fitted a week ago and so far it performs as well as the old unit which would have cost £500 to replace, like for like .

Neat unit. Quieter than the older model.
16 August 2022

It's a decent little unit. This was a DIY job and I was replacing an older model. That as easy enough because the fittings were the same. In operation it is quieter than the older InSinkErator and the air switch feels more positive. The only issue is that it blew a 5 Amp fuse once. Perhaps that's just too small for the unit's draw. We don't throw chicken carcasses down the sink. This is just for smaller food waste as we dump everything into a compost caddy. I still wouldn't be without it though because all those little bits of food from pans and plates are easier to dispose of.

Needs Adapter Kit
4 January 2022

I bought this in Australia for standard Australian kitchen plumbing. An adapter kit is required to go from 32mm dia outlet of the Insinkerator to dia 50mm standard plumbing. This kit is not mentioned anywhere in the description or on the box. I am also amazed that the adapter kit is not readily available in store. It is a special order item.Come on Bunnings. If you are going to sell this product put the adapter kit next to it and make sure it is clear the kit is needed.

Replace old 45 model
8 February 2022

Bought to replace my old leaking 45 model. Managed to fit this myself and was a straight swop. It is heavy and a little fiddly at times but you do get there in the end. Didn’t need to change any of my existing waste pipes too - phew! The only thing different, compared to old model was the waste outlet connection supplied but all measured up the same at final fit. I do find that this model is only useful for light soft items as domestic waste pipes are too small and it can block bends in waste pipes. Hint - if connecting a dishwasher waste pipe - don’t forget to break the outlet seal or you dishwasher will back up.

The Must Have Kitchen Accessory
21 March 2023

This an amazing piece of kit and a must have for any kitchen where there is space to install; they are bulky and heavy but once installed you can simply forget about that. Easy to use with this variant having an air switch and it does an outstanding job of crunching up the bones and food waste. Noise wise it’s good too. Excellent bit of kit highly recommended.

To Jonathan: Model 56 v 46
26 December 2020

Jonathan said in his review that he continues (4 times thus far) to replace his InSinkerator with this same model 46 (with galvanized steel grinding components), because he quite incorrectly believes the superior model 56 (STAINLESS STEEL grinding components) will not fit into the same place with respect to alignment of the discharge pipe fitting and the yoke which attaches the unit to the sink.Well I just replaced my old rusted out (model 46) today with a 56 and it took me about 5 minutes. The alignment and the attachment yoke are 'standard DIN' - exactly the same for all models. The only (slight) difference was the sound baffle (rubber cover thing with the 4 cone shaped things) that open out to allow the rubbish to fall from the sink into the unit. The alignment and the attachment yoke are 'standard DIN' - exactly the same for all models. The only (slight) difference was the sound baffle (rubber cover thing with the 4 cone shaped things) that open out to allow the rubbish to fall from the sink into the unit. I took the sound baffle from the old one as it is still in perfect condition and attached it to the same place on the top of the new one...The big 'nut' thing which holds the unit to the yoke mounted in the sink is exactly the same as the old 46. I always leave that yoke intact because the gasket between the sink and the mounting yoke is perfectly ok, so I just leave it there - don't want to risk damaging the gasket and have to fool around scraping it out before replacing it with a new one - just more work which isn't necessary. This is the 5th unit I've attached to the same sink with the same mounting yoke.(and original gasket), for the exact same reason Jonathan had to replace his rusted out model 46, 4 times.I'm sure this new 56 model with Stainless Steel interior will last many times longer than the old galvanized steel 46 and was well worth the much higher cost, so yes I would absolutely recommend this model to anyone.
