I bought the J7+ for two main reasons, the self-empty feature and that it received relatively high scores online for cleaning carpets. The self-empty feature is mostly good. The only problem I've had is that it will occasionally say the bag is full when it's only about half full. This requires that I remove the bag, jiggle it around a little, and put it back. Not the end of the world, but annoying. The carpet cleaning isn't great, especially with pet hair. I have a cat and run this vacuum every day. Unfortunately, the design of the vacuum's brush is such that it clumps up the hair and then leaves random hairballs as it goes. So, rather than picking up all the hair, I get a trail of hairballs throughout the cleaning zone. Moreover, the bush's design allows for hair to get stuck in the "axle" part of the brush. About 50% way through the life of the brush, I get warnings that the brush is stuck and that I need to clear the obstruction. Each time, it requires me to remove the two brushes and pull hair that's been wrapped around on the underside, where the oddly large "axel" area is located. Basically, it's not great for the main two reasons I bought it. Moreover, the battery life is laughable. This is exasperated by the fact that the navigation is absolutely awful. I own a couple of "off brand" robot vacuums that cost half the price, but they have far superior battery and navigation logic compared to the J7+. My final annoyance with the robot is that it doesn't allow the user to monitor precisely where it is during a job, or where it left off when it inevitably goes back to the dock for one of its many charging breaks. Again, I have much cheaper vacuums that are much more precise and allow for the user to check its location and/or completed areas. One positive thing I can say is that the smart obstacle avoidance is pretty good when it comes to cords, shoes, socks, etc. Still slams into walls and furniture at full speed. Not good.

Pros: - Designated app. Not glitchy, easy to navigate, great UI, can designate areas for it to not clean, recognizes rooms so you can clean specific rooms - Clean design Con: - Poor cleaning power. I've seen tons of youtube reviews where it gets above 90 score on hardwood floor cleaning. It fails to clean visible pieces of dust (I've let them purposely in the middle of the living room to see if it will pick it up). It isn't bad at it but you definitely to sweep the floor again or vacuum it if you want the floor to be really clean. - Bad sensor. The camera seems to be only good for scanning. It advertises that it can detect poop or loose wires on the ground and avoid them but it has to actually physically make contact with the walls/furniture before it backs up and ... So I have no idea how it can't recognize walls before colliding with them but it can somehow avoid pet poop? If you have pets and you are considering getting this because of the "poop avoidance" feature, definitely get the LIDAR-mounted ones. They seem to be much better at obstacle recognition. - This kinda goes with the previous complaint but because it's not LIDAR, it is much more inefficient in mapping out the entire room and calculating route. I don't mean that it can't scan the entire room accurately, it DOES scan well. But as for the routes, it does not vacuum in a pattern but seem to just randomly go about until it collides with something. Which means it takes long to clean. I have an average-sized 1bd apartment and it takes 40 minutes (and I don't let it clean the bathroom). Conclusion: I definitely should have went with LIDAR robo vacuums like the ones from roborock.

It does take amusing pictures and I still love and enjoy my little Roomba. Maybe my CON's will be PRO's down the Road when those things are improved and I will certainly opt for that newer Generation. Til then my little guy will be good enough, just not perfect yet- overall still a good little Robot to have.

I always hoped to find a Roomba under the Christmas tree, but this year Christmas came early! We decided on the j7+ as we liked the idea of it being self emptying. It arrived quickly and well packaged direct from iRobot. The base station was smaller than I thought which was a pleasant surprise. We let it charge for a few hours then started a mapping run. The iRobot app that you download to use with it is really easy to use. I have been really impressed how well it has been cleaning. We have a mix of laminate and lino downstairs, topped with runners and rugs. The map shows the location of carpeted areas that the Roomba has discovered. We also live in an odd shaped corner house but the j7+ has handled it well. I love the fact you can create keep out areas and clean ... We have a mix of laminate and lino downstairs, topped with runners and rugs. The map shows the location of carpeted areas that the Roomba has discovered. We also live in an odd shaped corner house but the j7+ has handled it well. I love the fact you can create keep out areas and clean zones near bins etc so the Roomba knows to avoid or pay more attention in these zones. It is quiet when vacuuming but does get loud when emptying at the base station (only as loud as a normal upright but it only lasts for a few seconds). I have been impressed with it's ability to navigate and clean. It is strangely very entertaining to watch. Seeing my parents raise their legs so the j7+ can clean near the sofas, watching our dog chase after it (we now shut her in her space but she barks when the Roomba cleans in front of her safety gate entrance), my son narrating the cleaning journey and seeing the j7+ line up to go up the ramp to it's base is priceless. I suffer with arthritis and degenerative discs in my back. At times I cannot vacuum and watch sadly as dog hair forms into dog hair tumbleweeds. Now I no longer have to worry because this Roomba can handle collie cross hair like a boss! Just seeing the clean floors makes me feel better. My elderly parents have been really impressed by the j7+. They hate new technology but have been blown away but the Roomba. They are impressed by it's diligence and how clean the floors are after it has been round. It vacuum under the radiator cover 3 times in 1 session!
The packaging is surprisingly compact which its thanks to the j7+ having a shorter but wider self emptying bin. This is better than some others that have tall narrow bins as it gives an option to locate it under a table and the extra wideness doesn't take up any extra room as it is room the robot it self would occupy. In the box is the robot, clean station (which has one dust bag installed and a spare in a handy storage area), a QuickStart guide, manual, extra filter, spare side brush and power cord. The vacuum i received came with and EU plug but no UK plug. on contacting iRobot they sent me a new one. Setup was a breeze. it was a case of plug it in, place the robot on the charger and follow the simple instructions on the app. the only difficulty i experienced was it didn't seem to like either my Wi-Fi name or password. I was able to add it to my guest network(exact same settings) with a simpler name and a password that didn't contain any special characters. The object avoidance is 'OK' at first i didn't think it was working as it ran into a few things. but i did eventually start getting photos in the app asking me about objects and its seems to work most of the time. though has difficulty spotting with smaller objects still, for example the partners socks when balled up or a stray cotton bud(this ended up getting dragged around). Pick up Is pretty good though not perfect. I have started to notice that the Robot seems to be restoring the pile of the carpet. The Self emptying feature works well but it is rather loud so not sure about running it at night in a flat. It picked up a surprising amount considering the carpet had been vacuumed 2 days prior with a top brand upright, Mapping is slow to create but works well once its had chance to explore for a while, and it even goes back to empty before going back. Scheduling and creating custom jobs looks easy but not played around much with that yet. would love to see more features in the app in the future.
I have 7 people, 1 dog, and 1 cat, my vacuum has to run 3 times a day to maintain my house, every time it is done my house looks amazing, Things to improve on, the 2 rollers get hair trapped at the ends and around them, sometimes it is so bad that it burns a line into the rollers, they are included in regular maintenance to be replaced though so that is good and needed, but if they could make a setup like shark where it cuts the hair that would make a huge difference. Next the trash bin it has too much dust get stuck in corners, and the bin sensors are not good at all they have only been right 3 times since I have owned it, good upgrade to make it washable but the corners trap too much dust it needs a new shape or something to make sure it gets all the dirt. The front spinner brush can't transition to carpet it just stops spinning until it is level again, and it has a hard time with my bathroom mats as well it has even gotten stuck before but not always so that's good, the bathroom is also where 1 of the 3 brushes broke off, I didn't even know that could happen lol but it did. When I watch it mess up it is because it can't see on the sides of it so it seems like 2 more cameras with lights would fix everything but I would have to watch it to see, oh and extend the bumb sensor farther around the sides as well. The light needs to be brighter at night too because it hits things too hard as well. Also I have noticed a lot of people think things are too loud on it I disagree and would like to have models reflect that make a weak quiet one for them and make a strong loud off for people who understand that it is a vacuum and it has to clean and that is ok, even the vaccume base can be louder, if that would help, or if possible make it where it can tell when it needs to clean stronger or not. It still needs a bigger battery as well especially if it has 3 cameras, and 3 lights. It would be helpful to if you could adjust the height of it to your furniture so it won't get stuck if it goes under it. The camera needs to understand more as well and if that isn't possible then it needs more than keep our zones, I have a door that stays open but it tries to close it as it cleans, I would love to be able to text the device out and make changes with the company as well so if there is a way to do that please let me know. The keep our zones on my map move by themselves, and I would like to just block the door way instead of make a box if possible. Also if it could see water on the floor from coming in and out of the house near the door that would be better too. It malfunctions in small spaces too that needs fixed. All that being said it is the first ever realistic vaccume that can actually vaccume my house without me babysitting it and actually cleaning the whole house, that is a game changer and I can't wait for the next model, oh and I would like to replace it with a new one, once a year too for the program I have please.
I got this on sale from Target after watching its price for a while. This seems to be the best combination of (relative) affordability and performance on the market from the professional review sites I looked at beforehand. Taking it home and running it, I found that it actually performs much better than my old upright vacuum with zero hassle. I have it vacuuming areas of tile, utility carpet, and medium carpet in my 1200 sqft apartment. It does an excellent job with all of these surfaces. If I have it vacuum the whole place, it does need to charge about mid-way and maybe empty a couple times in the middle, which I think is reasonable considering that we have a dog and it is picking up a bunch of hair each time. Regarding specific gripes in other reviews: yes, the emptying sound is loud (but not jet engine, more like the volume of a regular vacuum) but only lasts a few seconds. I find that it picks up dog hair pretty well. It also handles thresholds/rug edges fine at about 1cm. It bumps into things when learning, of course, but not with much force contrary to some reviews. As for the learning, it didn't take much for it to master my oddly-shaped layout between the rooms and the furniture in them. I definitely would spring for the base instead of just getting the bot. That way you can truly start it and forget about it instead of having to manually empty a few times as it putters around. Overall: 100% recommend with no regrets and I wish I had gotten one sooner.
I'm a huge geek so I've been using robots long before robots were so common. My first roomba was a pinball version that could easily be defeated with a stray sock or a chair leg. I've tried different brands and even tried my hand at Frankensteining a robot vacuum to enhance its intelligence and power. I upgraded to the i7 and in doing so, it addressed many of the problems I had with previous models. First, the auto empty capability is a game changer. Now I'm saying that, it doesn't make the robot "maintenance free" but it does resolve many of the headaches I lamented with earlier models. It also has a dramatically improved mapping system. The new maps are real world and match the area to a point you can actually determine what rooms are what enough to name them. The ... The new maps are real world and match the area to a point you can actually determine what rooms are what enough to name them. The robot doesn't get "lost" as often. It send yo get back to its base relatively often and isn't hidden in a closet, under a couch or bed... as often. It has a camera that looks for cords and even dog poop and avoids them. Even to the point that it will send you pictures of the issue and ask if you want to permanently block the vacuum from even going tin that area. The app is extremely useful and tracks the replacement part life and even can reorder those consumables if you wish automatically-which is very nice. Ok, now the negatives. It's fairly expensive. At $800 plus, it's not for the "let's buy a robot today" crowd. Plan your purchase and choose your robot vacuum wisely. The i7 camera does has some limitations in that if it comes across dark rugs on a light floor, the vacuum gets confused that it's found a hole that it might fall into so it will get stuck. Get the level of vacuum that does the things you need for your home/business. Auto scheduling, auto empty, auto consumable reorder and comprehensive mapping are all advantages the i7 provides. This is definitely the smartest robot vacuum I've ever owned, and I've owned well over a dozen in the last decade. This vacuum does make me pleased about my investment overall.
I bit the bullet and upgraded from a dumb robot vacuum (ecovacs N7) to this smart robot vacuum because it was on sale for $200 off MSRP. Three months later and I've been completely satisfied with the upgrade. Thanks to the mapping feature on the J7 I was able to replace 2 existing vacuums and know that my entire upstairs got cleaned. The old vacuum would get stuck in a room because it couldn't find the door and keep cleaning the same area till it ran out of power. The self emptying dust bin is a great time saver and means less maintenance each week. The sensors and programming are much better at keeping the J7 from getting stuck and having to be rescued. I'm not thrilled about sharing my floorplan and cleaning schedules with iRobot, or any company. The roombas are ... I'm not thrilled about sharing my floorplan and cleaning schedules with iRobot, or any company. The roombas are very expensive. Even more expensive if you have multiple floors and need daily cleaning in all areas and have to get multiple vacuums. It's brushes will leave a few little twists of felted up hair behind if you have pets, long hair, or both so it's not a pristine clean unless you have it do a deep clean every time. However, I am more than willing to deal with those negatives for all the benefits that this robot vacuum offers over my old robot vacuums. If you want to see if a robot vacuum is for you I'd suggest getting a cheap one to try with for a year or two. No robot vacuum is perfect or capable of competing with a traditional vacuum. If you can accept the compromises though and find them beneficial then I would highly recommend getting this model when it's on sale. I can't say if it's really worth it over other models at the full MSRP though.
I really enjoy my J7 Roomba. I have a two bedroom with all hard floors and no pets and the robot cleans really well. I'm going to talk about something in this review that may not have been talked about before. I'm a blind person so I can't read print. I use an iphone which has a build in screen reader called Voiceover that allows someone to access and use the touch screen on the phone without seeing it. The Irobot app works very well with Voiceover, it's easy to navigate to and activate the controls in the app and I was able to set up the robot completely without sighted help. I've started collecting robot vacuums and the Irobot app is definitely one of the most accessible apps when using a screen reader. Android also provides a screen reader called talkback and ... Android also provides a screen reader called talkback and hopefully the app is just as accessible on that platform but since I don't have an android device I can't test that. While the Roomba J7 is a great robot and one that I'm very glad I purchased, I do have some suggestions for improving it as well as a couple suggestions for future Roomba models. First, when doing a mapping run with the J7, it still spins the side brush. I would suggest eliminating that, since it's not cleaning, there is no reason to spin the side brush. This is something that could be done through software I would think. Now for some suggestions on future robots. First, provide a larger battery. I could be mistaken but I think the battery in the J7 is around 2100 MA. That is extremely small compared to other robot brands. Other brands are including 5000 or 6000 MA batteries with their bots. It takes the J7 around 70 minutes to clean my apartment and at that point the battery shows as being low in the app. I have several robots from other brands that have a much stronger vacuum motor and when running them on max power for the same length of time, the battery still has 40 or 50 percent battery life remaining. Finally, bring back the powerful vacuum motor that was used in the S9.
