Sometimes the one who loves you is the one who hurts you the most. Lily hasn't always had it easy, but that's never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She's come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up. She graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily's life suddenly seems almost too good to be true. Ryle is assertive, stubborn, and maybe even a little arrogant. He's also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily, but Ryle's complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corriganโher first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is put to the test.

This was my first Colleen Hoover read and I am impressed! The writing and story was beautiful and heartfelt. It was such an easy read and left me wanting more of Lilyโs story.I read many reviews on here with many complaining that it was โunrealisticโ and โnot believableโ, And even one saying that โRyleโs character wasnโt congruent with that of an abusive manโ. When Iโm fact, there are many men out there just like Ryle. Women who are charming, handsome, and loving but have a switch that just turns and they are suddenly abusive, then the switch turns again and they are apologetic. It. DOES. Happen. Just because you havenโt experienced it doesnโt make it unbelievable. As someone who experienced verbal and physical abuse first-hand from their ex-partner, I can attest that it does happen. And the desire to want to stay with your childโs father because you think you can handle it, or because you try to rationalize that the food has outweighed the bad, or because you have always dreamed of raising your children together with their father instead of having a broken homeโฆ. These are all REAL thoughts and experiences that many women have when dealing with an abusive partner. You try to rationalize their behavior or make excuses and stay when you should leave. It all happens. And this story shows that side of it. It gives you a glimpse into the emotional state of the abused and why they sometimes stayโฆ why they donโt call the cops or report itโฆ why they have a hard time letting go when they are in love or think they are in love. I understand that internal struggle when you are pregnant with their child but want them to be a better person. I recognize that moment after having their child that you realize that even if you want to help the person and think you can handle the bad, that itโs finally time to leave the relationship for the sake of your child. This story has been beautifully written and brought back so many memories of my past experiences. It also helped shed a light on some of my own feelings that I hadnโt been able to put into words before.I cannot wait to dive into more CoHo books. Thank you Colleen, for writing this story. I completely understand what you said in your notes about how you wanted to write Ryleโs story differently because you wanted it to be different for him. I felt that too while reading it. I loved seeing him go from never wanting relationships to trying them because of Lily, and the steps he took to change given his history and his young child life. I didnโt want his character to do what he did and wanted the happily ever after with Lily. But just like you said, I understand why it needed to be written. And I thank you for writing on behalf of all of us who have experienced this.

I know this book has a ton of hype around it, so I want to touch on some of its downfalls as well as its triumphs. I'll preface this by saying, I do love the book and after finishing it, have not been able to get it off my mind. I fell in love with the characters (especially Atlas) and the story and think this is absolutely worth reading for anyone even mildly interested. I think that this book was written with the intention of being digestible for all readers. It touches on a sensitive subject and aims to teach (as the author states in the author's note). For this reason, it's clear the book is intended to be easy to read. I understand this, but I think it falls short in being TOO simplistic. I think that this book was written with the intention of being digestible for all readers. It touches on a sensitive subject and aims to teach (as the author states in the author's note). For this reason, it's clear the book is intended to be easy to read. I understand this, but I think it falls short in being TOO simplistic. The writing often lacks personality as the sentences are so simply written. The characters are also undercharacterized. We don't get alot of depth in this book, just alot of movement in the plot. Even so, I wouldn't say the plot is unheard of, but I do think it's worth experiencing. Hoover includes random bits throughout the book that are meant to come off as quirky, exhibiting a less serious approach to literature. While I understand this, I wish these bits had worked to serve the plot (ex: The Ellen letters, the onesies, etc.). As for the message itself, I've seen alot of discourse online as to how she treats the sensitive subject matter at hand. I do think this book allowed me a level of perspective on these issues I wouldn't have otherwise had. However, I see that the book's ending and the perspective the book opens the reader up to can be a dangerous one, and can even make the reader more susceptible to these situations if internalized incorrectly. This is a bit difficult to explain without spoiling and/or using trigger words. The message of the book is essentially very blurry and very controversial.
I donโt get the hype over this book/author. Itโs reminiscent of a teenager that only knows about romantic relationships from bad rom com movies. The inclusion of Ellen DeGeneres is so juvenile and major fangirl โI canโt stand rich people that only care about material things, oh but not you Ellen, I know you donate to charities.โ Give me a break. And then the ridiculous โJust keep swimming. Remember that quote Ellen? Itโs from Finding Nemo.โ As if Ellen wouldnโt remember where a quote is from by a character that she voiced. There were so many cringey, immature things in this book it was hard to read and Iโm pretty sure I lost brain cells. Not to mention the careers in this story with no explanation on how they happened. Her strength is incredibly admirable. Aaaaaand, I'm actually wanting to read more CoHo books now - hopefully I'll come across Verity or Ugly Love.
This book is truly a masterpiece! Colleen knows how to grab the readers attention and keep it there!! It has been sometime now since Iโve had such a good read as I have found in this book set of two with the starting book, โit ends with us,โ AS I AM FINDING IT QUITE HARD TO KEEP MY HANDS OFF IT!! A purely find myself so wrapped around the writing of this author portraying the characters out, every drop of it, I find myself actually purposefully trying to not read the book TOO QUICKLY!!! I look forward to getting through this book and beginning โit begins with us, โwhich of course we all know is the sequel to the book Iโm reading now! Miss Colleen Hoover is quite a talented writer, I knew that she had talent, however, she has held on to my attention and probably will never be able to let go of it!!!!!!!!!!Awesome BOOK PICK!!!-Shannon
I picked up this book assuming a romance novel. I enjoy unrealistic exaggerated romance novels, that are a fantasy of what love actually is. And for the first several chapters thatโs what I got. But it isnโt. Itโs a gut wrenching, heart clenching, emotional story of the hardships of love, loss, consequences, fear, pain, anger, and impossible decisions. This story isnโt just for women, while the cover may be deceiving. This is a story for anyone thatโs been in love, and anyone thatโs learned or is learning the hard way of how love can hurt you. Itโs also for anyone who knows love that is so deserving, respectful and kind, and as an outsider canโt understand how those that donโt receive the same kind of compassionate, kind and respectful love donโt simply leave. Read this over the weekend because I had Covid and laid in bed all week. Absolutely glad I read it in a weekend, because I would been very upset if I had invested anymore time into it. Truly disappointing read, the story feels force and unnatural. It's not all terrible I rather enjoyed the about the letter to Ellen regarding her interactions with Atlas those feel natural. Everything seems like an exmachina to keep the story going or rather create a story. Don't see how this author could be on NY times best-selling list, really don't see how this books has so much hype. It feels done like I've somehow already read this book, not very original. Which is a shame because I think if the author was aiming for this to be a book about DV she missed the boat. This was my first Colleen Hoover book and it didn't disappoint! Lily is so authentic, keeps to her values, and makes the reader want her to succeed. The way Colleen writes this, it's hard to know what's coming next and as a reader I found myself as shocked by the twists as Lily did. The constant back and forth of present and past timelines was a great way to show character depth on Lily's part and introduce Atlas without him actually having to be there. And when he is there, dynamite. As someone who's gone through a similar experience to what Lily did in this book in the past, I felt this book put my thoughts into words more beautifully than I ever could. One thing I'll say is that while yes this book does have romance elements I would not market it as a romance or go into it expecting that. It's much more a cautionary tale and a contemporary fiction novel. But this made me want to read everything Colleen Hoover has ever written and I'm actively waiting for the sequel this Fall!
