The anti-slip rubber on the bottom of the unit is a lovely touch and it means the unit should stay securely in place while you party, even if someone bumps the table it’s placed on.I used the succinct setup guide which also included easy-to-follow pictures to get it set up. The QR code to download the JBL app was a nice touch, but you don’t even need that to start playing your music. It was super easy to connect to my phone; I opened Bluetooth on my phone - hit the Bluetooth icon on the JBL and connected to it. Simple as pie! My iPhone immediately recognised it and I could use it as a speaker. It took me 1 minute to connect! The next thing I did was look to set up the app and Wi-fi for music streaming. Within a minute I was connected to my Wi-Fi router and the JBL searched for a firmware update. 2.5 minutes later I was updated to the latest firmware with a progress bar to confirm all was well and ready to use Airplay as I use an iPhone. Easy! The app is simple and gives you access to a variety of music services you can connect to, but unfortunately no direct connection to Apple Music (though you Air-Play to it from iTunes so no big deal). You get others like Amazon, Napster, Spotify, etc., so that is nice - perhaps a future update? You can also set up Alexa which is super handy as I do like to use voice control. Some of the features I especially love are that you can see Wi-Fi strength and battery power level from within the app to put your mind at ease. There is also a great feature to tweak the equaliser, so the sound output is to your taste. My one criticism however is that some presets would have been welcome. The bass is strong and tailoring it via “one touch” presets to the genre of music you’re listening to would be very helpful. As for the sound quality, I must admit that in the beginning I was a little unimpressed, but that is because I was using the unit indoors and I hadn’t fiddled with EQ. Don’t get me wrong, the audio is great but you do need to tune the EQ to get the best results, especially indoors. Where this unit shines is when you set it up outside. We had a BBQ and invited some family friends over. There were two or three toddlers and three or four 6-year-olds running about whilst I was cooking and the parents were chatting, and the music sounded great. I set up my playlist on my iPhone in iTunes, began to Airplay to the speaker and forgot about it. Our friends commented on how great the speaker looked and how good it sounded. One of the interesting features of this one is that it has microphones that pick up the sound around it as it reverberates off things and tunes the audio output via some auto-adjust feature. The battery life is also awesome; I cannot stress this enough – I was playing music for something like 4 hours and it was only down to around 80%Overall, I’ve been very impressed with this JBL Boombox and feel it’s worth the money. The unbeatable features for me are the IPX rating (no worries about spills and splashes or even getting it submerged in a pool!), the impressive multi-directional sound and also the immense battery life!Party on!

Imagine the battery also contributes a good amount of the weight too, as it last a long time.Haven't tested the In App music function as this seems limited to only a few apps, none of which i subscribe to.

Fantastic, but something's not right.

It's probably hard to solve this without creating a hole inside for air pressure which not only makes it non IP67 water/dust resistant, but also would make frequency response poorer with the radiators. But the air inside of the speaker is trapped due to the sealed design, and when the drivers and battery are hard at work, it heats up, i.e. expands. This pushes the radiators out, as if they're about to explode. Then following the slow expansion of air inside, the radiators shake violently, distorting bass and rocking the speaker back and forth. I'd imagine it's not good for the rubber holding everything together and the subwoofer in the center being gyrated in and out at velocities that it's not in control of.Right now the thing is sitting on my bedroom floor. After playing music with lots of bass (smooth sine waves, constantly, 45-55-65 hz), they look inset now! And when lightly pushing on them they barely move.So these radiators are being forcibly held and pushed out, and in.I really hope the engineers saw this and knew that it would be like this. If anyone working for JBL sees this, I don't need a replacement, but I'd like the peace of mind that this is somewhat normal. This guy on reddit seems to be experiencing the same issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/JBL/comments/yrdls0/boombox_3_trapping_air_passive_radiators_getting/(For people reading the reddit post, don't listen to the comments. No there's no air escape hole but you get the point).I've also included a picture of my inset radiators, just look at those and tell me they don't look stuck in.

IT DOSNT LAST ANYWHERE NEAR 24 HOURS

IT DOSNT LAST 24 HOURS!1. So i bought this speaker under the assumption that the battery lasts 24 hours while playing music. JBL and other companies told me that it does and after 2 years of owning one i can confirm it lasts no where near 24 hours.I contacted JBL about this and they confirmed that the speaker only last 24 hours on the lowest possible volume and only while playing music that has 'no bass', well thats a bit of a scam isnt it - in no situation you will use this speaker on 'lowest volume' and only play music with no bass... thats just ridiculous! With further testing ive found it only lasts 3 - 4 hours on high volume but not max, and only 8 hours on 50% volume. To claim it lasts 24 hours is just a massive scam, ive also seen websites claim that the speaker lasts 24 hours on 50% volume but this just isnt the case.2. Software/hardware issue. About 6 months into owning the speaker, everytime a different phone connected to the speaker the sound settings would change and the bluetooth name of the speaker in settings would change to *name* Boombox 3 (*name* being whoevers phone just connected). Ive tried to fix this issue and JBL cant fix this issue either. Its a real pain though especially when your at a party and lots of people connect. Ive done multiple factory resets and that also dosnt fix it.3. OVER PRICED BIG TIME. I bought the speaker for $750 when they first came to the market and for the size that is a hefty price tag, but i took the benefit of the dought and got it anyway. For its size it is loud but not ground breaking.OVERALL - It has good sound quality and good 'volume' for the size. Good bass but not amazing.I do however like the water proofing, thats a good touch but thats as far as the good points go... battery life is awful if you actually use the speaker how it was intended to be used from JBL. The software issue still isnt fixed and never will be. And at $750 there SHOULD BE NO ISSUES.Hopefully the soon-coming boombox 4 will fix these issues, but then again im not sold as itll probs be very expensive as well.Hope this review will actually help other people as nearly all the reviews i see are fake and dont actually touch on how it performs in the real world.Good speaker - But potential to be a great speaker.

Nice sound, struggles in the sun

The sound on this speaker is big and detailed for the most part. That part is pretty awesome. However, when sitting in the sun, the metal handle absorbs A LOT of heat. Because of this, the speaker gets really hot in the sun. And it doesn’t have to be that hot, it has happened to me in mid 70s weather. When it gets too hot, the passive radiators on the side expand like a balloon. It affects the sound quality and the bass pretty dramatically. Because of this, you’re better off using the speaker in the shade or cooler areas. Which is interesting because of all the advertising of it sitting in the sun, hmmm…Also, I’m no engineer, but I feel like the racetrack subwoofer on the front should maybe be on the back of the speaker or something, so that the vibrations can ... MoreThe sound on this speaker is big and detailed for the most part. And then the tweeters probably shouldn’t be stacked directly on top of the mid speakers? Idk, just a suggestion I guess.Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the sound and looks of this speaker in general. I just feel that when it comes to tech specs this speaker could be a little better with its size and space available on it. And not to mention the price…

Would highly recommend it's an absolute show stopper of a product!

I'm comparing JBL Boombox 3 against a pair of Sonos Era 300 ($900) and Sonos Gen 3 subwoofer ($800) working together. I was happy with the performance of the Sonos combo (era 300 pair + sub gen 3) at home and thought I could use the JBL Boombox 3 as something that is portable. Comparing the Sonos combo against JBL Boombox 3, it is logical to think that Sonos combo would have better sound based on higher price and quantity (3 Sonos devices vs. 1 JBL). To my surprise, the JBL sounds better by itself than the more expensive Sonos combo. I was shocked. It is heavy, but the sound it produces is worth the weight. I believe you will like the Boombox 3 if you compared it against Sonos wireless speakers, such as Era 300 and Era 100 (I have both pairs).

[Rewarded Review] Great bass and overall sound, just pricey a bit
2 March 2024

Okay. For starters if you want something with some good sound and good bass compared to the normal mid range speakers, this is it.This thing is bigger than your usual speaker. I was looking for something with some more bass than the current JBL Extreme 2 I have, and this blew it out the water, of course over $150 the extreme price. Your able to download the JBL app so it helps you control a few EQ settings, including bass, but why lower that with the price tag on this thing.I live in an apartment and after a few days of use, I had to make a hard decision and say I'll return this because to listen to it at its full potential, the walls vibrate and it'll just be a complaint issue for me or my annoying neighbors. lol. Even if I drop the bass down fully using the app, it is just right to an extent, but with those settings, I'm basically at where the JBL Extreme 2 I have is, with maybe 10% more bass.So overall I'm returning this because I don't go out enough to use it, but it was a hard decision because I love the bass. This thing at a little outside hangout or beach would make it seem like you have an actual system with you, but for me, $500 for maybe a few outside uses a year is not worth it due to my living conditions. But if you use a lot outside for work or etc., have a home where neighbors wont be an issue due to the space next to each other, then this is it for you. Who knows, I have only had less than a week, maybe I might just keep it to have so when I do have those times I go out or we have family gatherings or beach days, then this speaker will be it. But for my general in home use in an apartment, I'll stick with my Extreme 2 I've had for the last year. That is on sale for $200 right now because they are on the 3rd version. Extreme 2 is greater than Extreme 3 because it allows you to answer and talk through your phone on the speaker which #3 does not, just FYI.Battery life is great, also depends on how loud you use it. I opened it a few days ago at 60% and only at 40% with a lot of use/testing.

[Rewarded Review] Incredible Surprise
6 January 2024

After enjoying nearly 20 years with my BEATBOX PORTABLE. Yes. I managed to keep the one product I spent $400$ on once upon a time for much longer than anyone anticipated, I came upon this item. After back and forth arguments in my mind about it… I came to the conclusion nothing will match that experience. So I made a choice to experience a new company. I’ve used JBL in past however not on this scale. At $500$ retail I wanted something with just as much as if not more hootzpah than the Beatbox Portable. Dr. Dre serviced my ears with great sound for 2 decades in several different varieties as I still own and use my Studio cubed headphones that I purchased in 2009. Which by the way I prefer to the newer StudioPros that aren’t anywhere near improved to the point one ... MoreAfter enjoying nearly 20 years with my BEATBOX PORTABLE. Yes. Dr. Dre serviced my ears with great sound for 2 decades in several different varieties as I still own and use my Studio cubed headphones that I purchased in 2009. Which by the way I prefer to the newer StudioPros that aren’t anywhere near improved to the point one would have expected. Happily I found JBL to be in my wheelhouse of options. I say happily as I went through several other companies to be let down by the “over priced under provided” sense of failure they offered. JBL never let me down before and having spent just two weeks with this product I know for fact this is remaining mine. Funny enough Best Buy offered an extra two weeks to mull over my decision. Graciously enough I haven’t the need to ponder a second longer. This was a most apt Christmas present to myself. With the sale of $100$ off retail… I capitalized on gifting myself the chance to dollar for dollar make no more than the purchase I made on the BBP by DRE. I would say I bought up even if you take out the fact of this being nearly 2 decades newer than what I had. JBL has become my go to for sound and because of my happiness with this product it led me to purchasing a set of headphones for my son from JBL and he loves them. Pleasantly surprised and never going back to Beats. Sorry DRE. Maybe you should have kept making the Beatbox. Oh and by the way… this thing is extremely heavy and dwarfs my BBP. JBL FOR THE RESOUNDING VICTORY. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. May all of your 2024s be as awesome as mine.
