Awesome speaker with a few caveats...

I will try to provide an unbiased review of the JBL Xtreme 2. Full disclosure, I'm not an audiophile, but I can tell you that if you are this is NOT the speaker for you, but if you love music, go out to the beach, pool or camping with any frequency, then this speaker would be a great addition with a few caveats.Sound Quality:Awesome. The bass is present in a significant way. Mids and highs are also faithfully recreated, but as you will find with other reviews, sometimes can take a back seat to the bass. I don't see it as that much of an issue, but the specificity of how loud the unit is played and the sound quality put this speaker in a specific category which I will elaborate more on later. The unit gets loud, but must be plugged in to reach its true ... MoreI will try to provide an unbiased review of the JBL Xtreme 2. I don't see it as that much of an issue, but the specificity of how loud the unit is played and the sound quality put this speaker in a specific category which I will elaborate more on later. The unit gets loud, but must be plugged in to reach its true potential. Running on battery alone, you will be hard pressed to find another speaker at this size that fills a space quite like this one, perhaps only the JBL Boombox, which for most would be overkill, and a hassle to take with you everywhere.I listen to a lot of hip-hop, R&B, and Dub Reggae, but I also listen to lo-fi music, classical, and house music, and the speaker doesn't miss a beat. The bass does tend to have more prominence over the other elements, but I found the sound evens out the louder you play the speaker.Speaking of volume, if you are going to play at lower volumes for a bedroom vibe, or you listen to podcasts, this speaker may not provide the low volume performance you are seeking. That being said, I have other smaller BT speakers that fit my podcasting needs, so it isn't a factor for me, but you may want to consider your listening habits before investing in this speaker. Now for the plugged vs. unplugged performance. There are tons of videos comparing the unit's performance in both modes, and there is a noticeable difference. It's clear that there is a significant increase in volume when the unit is running on AC power, but the range of the unit is so broad overall that unless your expectations are unreasonable (rocking a vast auditorium, or large open space), it should be plenty loud in either mode. I'm no engineer, so I will refrain from criticizing JBL for their choice to limit the volume when not plugged in, but I do wish they would provide an in-app option to favor volume over battery life, which brings me to the issue of customization. The Xtreme 2 doesn't allow you to tweak the sound unless the music service you are using provides an equalizer option in-app. I use Spotify, and the options provided allow for a decent amount of customization, but a speaker that full price runs you close to $300, I would expect the ability to go to town on the sound you desire. At a minimum, an ability to control the bass output is lacking and is one of the most significant omissions I have encountered. Also, the JBL app for this speaker is virtually useless other than connecting multiple speakers and providing firmware updates. More functionality would be much appreciated, and given some of their smaller speakers have an app that provides more nuanced sound control, it seems like a strange thing not to offer on the more expensive units.Build Quality:The speaker seems stable, and the fact that it's waterproof only serves to place it a realm of flexibility that should be a selling point to anyone who intends on taking this thing on the go. The unit isn't the smallest, and while it's by no means impossible to carry around, it is crucial to note that you probably won't be packing this thing for a trip on a plane.Final Thoughts:I think the JBL Xtreme 2 is an excellent speaker, that fits in a specific category. It is a party speaker that comes into its own at moderate to high volume. JBL's universe of BT speakers, as well as their Connect + feature, provides some great options if you can afford multiple speakers. This speaker would be great paired with a JBL Charge 4 or Flip 4, which will give you the flexibility of a smaller speaker, while still having the bigger sound of the Xtreme 2 for those moments when you want to rock the crowd.I gave the speaker a 4 out of 5 stars because I believe there should be an option to customize the sound through the JBL app at this price point. This being my first JBL speaker, I don't know how receptive the company is to customer input, but my advice is that it would be a lost opportunity to not provide simple sound customization options as soon as possible, particularly at this price point.

AC mode has higher dynamic impact than battery mode. In other words, using it simply on battery power, it has less “umph” than being plugged in. It is a necessary evil to balance sound output with battery life, but not the deal breaker some have wrote about. Other than that, i feel you’ll enjoy this speaker for many years as i have since 2019.Kind regards,The Speaker Freaker

Excellent sound, good battery life, so so design

I always wait a while to do any review, and as it's now over 12 months since I purchased this speaker, I feel the time is about right. So the not so good points.Well it's the overall design of the unit, and contributes to a couple of issues. The two bass panels either side of the speaker are exposed. THIS is potentially a disaster waiting to happen, I have had many friends pick the speaker up to have a look at it, and on ALL of these occasions I have warned them not to put their fingers on the inside of the sides so as to protect the speaker panels(Bass Radiators) from damage.I guess I am overly protective of the speaker because I am not sure exactly how they would cope when being picked up by the sides and some fingers push the panels in too hard(they do move ... MoreI always wait a while to do any review, and as it's now over 12 months since I purchased this speaker, I feel the time is about right. So the not so good points.Well it's the overall design of the unit, and contributes to a couple of issues. The two bass panels either side of the speaker are exposed. THIS is potentially a disaster waiting to happen, I have had many friends pick the speaker up to have a look at it, and on ALL of these occasions I have warned them not to put their fingers on the inside of the sides so as to protect the speaker panels(Bass Radiators) from damage.I guess I am overly protective of the speaker because I am not sure exactly how they would cope when being picked up by the sides and some fingers push the panels in too hard(they do move when music is being played), so a simple and neat protective panel in front of them would surely do the job of protecting them? Then there's the design flaw at the rear of the speaker. It is a little flawed in that the charge/connection ports are a quite difficult to access due to the tightness of the zip closure point, and also the fact it's a little awkward to see the writing on the cover, corresponding to the relevant connection point within, a slight grumble from someone who's eyesight is probably not as good as it used to be.The good points.Well the sound is by far the nicest of all it's competitors by far. The level of clarity is perhaps not quite Bose, but the bass tone and far higher volume capabilities far out way the bose in every other department and please the ear without fail. The bluetooth is easy to connect and the range is pretty good. The battery life seems to be excellent, with a charge lasting for weeks with some daily use.I love to hear music through speakers that can deliver, and my home system is a combination of Yamaha Amplifier with Kef Speakers. It took me years to complete my system, with lots of changes and re-thinks. So when I decided to buy a portable speaker I did a lot of research and tested many different speakers so that I could make the right decision first time. I listen to a wide range of music, so I needed a speaker that could deliver the many different sounds I like.My recommendation is to have a playlist on your device and take that to your local store and play them all. I did, and that's why I bought this speaker. It is excellent, and the only reason it has 4 stars, is the access point issue and speaker vulnerability.

Pretty happy with the Xtreme 2. Things that were important to me when choosing a bluetooth speaker:- speakerphone which I can use for conference calls from home- audio quality -- I like a balance frequency response, I like bass as much as anyone but also listen to a lot of metal so mids and crisp highs are also important- battery life for campingI'm still evaluating the speakerphone but it seems to be of a good quality speaker/mic and good connectivity to my phone. Audio quality is decent, I'd say the mids are a bit recessed but that seems to be a common trait for bluetooth speakers. It's not surprising, many genres sound best with this frequency response including pop. Anyway, it still sounds good for any genre so I'm satisfied. Can't comment on battery life yet, I'll update if I find anything unexpected there. Of course build quality is always important and this thing seems solid, premium and well built. The sound is highly directional which is not really ideal, many other speakers claim to be 360 sound (not sure how true that is) but this one only really sounds crisp if you're in front of it. In most cases that's fine but could be annoying if you're moving around a lot. On the other hand, it might sound better than those other ones when you are in front of it, not sure, if I buy another different speaker I'll update with an audio quality comparison.

I bought JBL Xtreme speaker first time 19 months ago. I very like it. Perfect sound and design.Unfortunately it last only 11 months.JBL replaced the speaker for free ,and sent me a new one. Unfortunately a new one also didn't last long. All of them has exactly same issue . Power button stop working after a 10 months. Very good speaker, but for 11 months $300 it is a lot.

Great speaker - poor firmware/software
4 June 2019

Bought two of these speakers with the intention to use 60% in the home with Wifi and 40% outdoors with Bluetooth. Setting them up was easy (although somewhat time consuming) and apart from a few glitches of not being found through the google home app after setting up it all works relatively well. The speakers sound good for their size and battery lasts pretty well. Boot up time, although slow, not really and issue for me.Construction is very nice and sturdy, however the plastic trim top and bottom is very easily scratched and looks pretty poor after the first few scuffs. The silicone membrane on the top also started to bubble up on my first two speakers (returned and replaced) within the first week causing the buttons to not work properly. The downfall of these ... MoreBought two of these speakers with the intention to use 60% in the home with Wifi and 40% outdoors with Bluetooth. The silicone membrane on the top also started to bubble up on my first two speakers (returned and replaced) within the first week causing the buttons to not work properly. The downfall of these speakers is when you want to use them for bluetooth as well. First attempt to use them with bluetooth was on a camping trip and neither speaker could be 'found' by any ones phone, only a 'Bose Soundlink' was found but we couldn't connect to it (and no one within 20km had one of these). After getting home I discovered that they could be found once I was within the Wifi network as a pair as I had the speakers set up as a left/right pair through google home. After discovering the firmware reset function I could then find each speaker individually through bluetooth but again found that once I was on the edge of the wifi range in the backyard, the speaker would stop playing even though it was still connected to my phone. After many hours of troubleshooting, resetting, setting up as individuals or pairs and getting no consistent results the helpful JBL support team offered me to take them back to the store. The store was great and gave me replacements on the spot but to no avail, they have the same faults.End of the day, they work great if you use them as a home Wifi speaker or if you only have one but their firmware/software lets them down if you want more than one. I have returned them for a refund due to their inability to do what they were advertised to do. I will have to have separate home wifi speakers and a separate bluetooth outdoor speakers and there are other speakers that perform these individual functions better.

Overall good but have a couple complaints
29 December 2023

1) EQ Sound: A: lacking highs. B: volume scaling of bass and mids is pretty rough. The bass is too loud for any volume <50% (using my iPhone bluetooth, no EQ set). I have to turn my "music app" EQ to "bass reducer" if I want the music to sound level (I usually don't go over 40% volume). However, the mids scale a ton more as the volume is increased. It is especially noticeable over 50%. I believe ~65% volume makes the bass and mids sound level (compared to my other audio equipment). Anything over that will make the mids dominate. C: the JBL app can't control an EQ for this speaker as far as I know. D: the mids are slightly directional, so they are a little quieter when the front of the speaker is facing away from you.2) Battery: seems to last quite a while for how ... More1) EQ Sound: A: lacking highs. I haven't tried to do any "testing" of my own, though.3) I have only ever opened the back cover panel one time, and I never want to do it again. IDK if it gets easier over time, but I had to use a big flat head screw driver to pry the cover open. It felt like I was going to break something for sure. I know it has to seal to be water-proof, but DANG!4) Frequency response: as I stated above, the highs seem to be lacking. I didn't try a high frequency sweep, though. The bass is good down to ~38Hz. After that it nose-dives hard. That's okay - I just want people to know that detail.5) The strap that comes with it is sturdy.6) I wouldn't suggest carrying it around for extended periods because of the weight. That's part of the price you pay for bigger speakers and battery, though.

Sounds Great but, the firmware is hot garbage
5 February 2020

I've had this thing for 6 months or so. Got it for work as I really needed something loud. It sounds great and is crazy loud especially for it's size. The issue is that I just brought it home and decided to hook it up to my PC to use over my monitor speakers. The problem is that the sound kept on cutting out for a half second or longer. Couldn't figure it out and it was driving me crazy. Thought for sure it was an audio driver issue on my PC and I spent the past 4 hours trouble shooting my PC. It wasn't the PC. As I'm literally giving up I decide to check and see if there's a known compatibility issue or something weird with this speaker and that's when I find a thread someone posted. Apparently someone at JBL decided in their infinite wisdom that you can't just ... MoreI've had this thing for 6 months or so. Got it for work as I really needed something loud. Apparently someone at JBL decided in their infinite wisdom that you can't just turn the device way up and control the volume from the input side (the obviously easy choice on a PC). Nope, running a low input signal will basically make your 300$ speaker sleepy. Constantly nodding off and cutting out the sound while it seemingly starts to sleep and then wakes back up.I didn't even believe it, it sounded so unlikely but I turned the speaker way down and cranked the input and it worked without a hitch. It's an irritating oversight/blunder that had me checking my motherboard with a multimeter. A firmware update would be nice here. Take sleep off of it entirely for all I care. I'd rather something that works how I want it to than a way too aggressive sleep timer. The fact that it even sleeps when it's plugged in is either lazy or pointless.I like this thing a lot other than that. At work on a high volume, I never even knew it had this issue. At the very least think through how your devices sleep in the future but, I'd appreciate a downloadable update. The JBL phone app is junk as well unless you want to sync a few devices or rename one.Why is Comfort a category for a bluetooth speaker?

Top-Tier Christmas Gift
25 December 2020

I just got this today as a Christmas present. It is ridiculously overpowered and most definitely aptly named. The JBL Xtreme 2 is the best bluetooth speaker I've ever owned. Volume at halfway is enough to fill a large-sized room with sound, and crisp enough to still make out all the sounds on another level of my house (for example, having it play in my second floor bedroom and still hear it loud and clear in my first floor kitchen). Medium volume on this thing is equivalent to full volume on my Flip 5. Full volume makes it slightly unbearable to hear when you're in the same room with it, but that'll make it great for parties and outdoor gatherings. ;)Love the clip-on carrying strap and waterproof features. It's got some weight to it, so you won't ever have to ... MoreI just got this today as a Christmas present. It is ridiculously overpowered and most definitely aptly named. It also handles a variety of music genres (especially rock/metal) much better than my Flip 5 and Go 2, and is still better than my Charge 4. The bass radiators are INSANE and caused my BED to vibrate on 50% volume when I had it on the floor of my room. JBL definitely did everything right with this bad boy! RECOMMENDATION XTREMELY HIGH!
