As others have said the finger guard is only for the slicer and not for grating. You should be able to flip it over and pop on the grating side. Big design miss here!I also see the replies to some reviews saying it is not possible as it would slice and grate at the same time. It actually wouldn't if it were on the other side.

So bummed!! I prepare my garlic by grating 95% of the time. So often I will end up grating my finger and was thrilled to see this gadget. As with other reviewers - what a huge oversight! Another channel on the grater side would make it usable as intended. When this is remedied I would surely love to be sent one since I do not feel like I can return this. I typically love all of your products!

I got excited when I reviewed the packaging because I wanted a grater with a finger guard and saw the product had a slicer too. I thought I had a defected product when I tried to grate with the finger guard but quickly realized (and the comments confirmed), it was not designed to grate with a finger guard. I understand it wouldn't make sense to put both slicer and grater on one side but even a 7-year old would've suggested to put a guard track on the flip side for the grater. I'm sure you committed to boxes of this product and probably financial unsound to update with modifications...but now you've just made room for another company to improve and grab the sales you probably could've gotten. I'm returning mine...to bad though, I really liked the product otherwise.

We bought this with great expectations, but ......whilst the slicer works as expected, its near impossible to use the grater safely. The Finger Guard idea works well for the slicer but for some crazy reason it cannot be used on the grater. Why on earth not????? Very bad design fault!!!!A better design would be to have the safety carriage slide on the outside of the body and thus allow it to fit on both sides as required.I would be happy to invoice my design consulancy fee........
Flawed design. Advertised as a safe way to grate garlic etc but the guard only works on the slicer so the most likely outcome if you grate garlic is blood in your garlic. Joseph Joseph are renowned for clever design. This would have been if the guard groove was on both sides. Common sense was absent when this went through the design process.
This is really no good. As other reviewers have mentioned, the finger guard is only for the slicer. The person responding to those reviews says it's because otherwise you'd be slicing and grating at the same time. But the TRACKS to hold the guard could be on both sides - so you could choose - since the cutting edges are on different sides. Slicers are easy to get hold of, but what I really need in my kitchen drawer is this exact tool but with the finger guard on the grating side eg for nutmeg or garlic or ginger! Mind you, the little box is so tiny there isn't really much useful you could grate in it except garlic (even if you could grate in the box which you can't...). The other thing is that the clear plastic bit that holds the item down is impossible to hold down ... MoreThis is really no good. The other thing is that the clear plastic bit that holds the item down is impossible to hold down while slicing - since it doesn't clip because you've got food in it. A really peculiar design for a company which is known for clever designs, I thought I must be using it wrong but the other reviewers plus the responses, show that it's just a bad design.
The picture of this greater and mini slicer shows a small item in the sliding grater/ slicing attachment. The grating side is on the opposite side of the slicing side. If you wanted to hold steady something that you wanted to grate, this would not work as it only fits on the side that has the little slicer on it. I thought if you were trying to grate garlic it would help the garlic cloves in place and protect your fingers from being grated as well when you got to the end of the garlic clove. This is not the case. It only protects your fingers if you are slicing something small and put it in the attachment. A slight disappointment but it grates very finely, almost liquefying Lemon peel instead of grating it into fine pieces. Is same as garlic & ginger. I guess it has ... This looks great in principle but I agree with other reviews that the track for the holder needs to be on both sides,so the holder can be swapped (it is removable for cleaning anyway) and used for BOTH cutters.Try grating a piece of garlic without a holder! - this is exactly when you do need the holder! In it present state it is flawed and pretty useless and not worth having in my utensil drawer. Probably will get binned. I appreciate now that I should have looked more closely at the pictures on the website, but worth putting on there that the holder cannot be use for the grater - or ideally listen to those who have commented (all the negative comments are about the same problem) and change the design ! I'm sure it would not be v. difficult and you would then have ... First and foremost I would like to debunk other reviews. This is in fact a grater and slicer. You merely have to remove an reverse the cutting surface piece. I guess you could say my TV is no good because it only gets one channel....oops, what's this things called a remote? :-) Great value for the price charged. Easier than pulling out the larger mandolin for smaller jobs.
Before I bought this, I read reviews of the product elsewhere so, I know what I was getting. Personally, while it does work, I think they would have better served consumers had it been wider than it is. While you can slice a radish with it, it or anything else must fit into the narrow opening. Some complain about the grater being inconvenient to use but I have a separate micro planer so not an issue. Safety wise, they include a cover that you should store it in and the pieces do fit onto the slicer so, no storage clutter. Better for most would be their mandolin slicer as it's wider, cuts very thin, and has a well designed gripper tool that holds large and small items well. I sliced a large onion with that and it made very quick work of it. Joseph Joseph is a UK ... MoreBefore I bought this, I read reviews of the product elsewhere so, I know what I was getting. Hopefully they will read the reviews to address the issues their customers have identified.
