One thing I thought of though is that the softer rubber probably grips better on the rocks. If you go to an REI to shop instead of online they may tell you how this shoe is a flexible shoe its not really a hardcore hiking boot. The other kind of shoes have thicker and harder rubber but they feel like work boots. I like a shoe that can feel the ground more, that's just how I like to hike. I will admit that after 10 hours in these shoes my feet feel like they've been battered. Lighter weight people might have better results with these shoes. Or, maybe throw a thicker insole in them.

I eventually had to buy shoe glue and paste it back together. That did fix the problem, though, and the actual tread itself seems to be durable--it's the adhesive that's useless. Due to the legendary comfort, I kept wearing these for work and didn't have any other issues with the tread after I glued it back on.The bigger disappointment came here recently, when I was working out in the rain and stepped into a puddle. It wasn't raining hard and the puddle was probably two inches deep, but I felt the water soak through the toe area of my boots almost immediately. Soaked my feet straight through, and they stayed wet for the remaining 6 hours I had them on--I rung water out of my socks once I got them off. The boots took more than a day to dry out too. These boots might qualify as "water-resistant" for light use, but they are not waterproof. I'd understand if the water ran into the boots from the top, where the waterproofing ends, but these leaked through the toes of the boots.Since wet feet is something I generally try to avoid, especially for prolonged periods of time, I'm now torn between buying these again and hoping my other pair were duds, or going with a different brand that has all-black boots which are reputed to be actually waterproof. If and when Keen makes these better, or makes one of their similar models waterproof, I will jump at the chance to try them.

It was beyond frustrating & has turned me away from buying any more Keen brand shoes.

The foot bed has enough cushioning for comfort, but not so much that you cannot feel the terrain. Responsive. Great for hiking and outdoor activities, but would not recommend for standing in one spot for any length of time. I use for USPSA activities. Great for running the course, but my feet are done by the end of a long match. I also use for biking with over-the-toe clips. I do wish Keen would make a non-water proof or hot weather version in wide. Additionally, the boot is pretty much worn out after 9 months. A little over 200 miles hiking plus other activities. The plasticized canvas type material that runs along the sole cracked and came apart on the inside of the toe-box on both. This material is not as resilient as the leather and cannot be conditioned. If not for this, the boots would still be serviceable. At this price point, I cannot really complain. I can buy 3 pairs for what others cost and these fit. I also bought at a big-box outdoor retailer. They may and been sitting on a shelf for a while.

The men's size 8 is usually more than big enough and normally a little too wide. I tried this booth on and loved the fit not too wide and my big toe was position perfect. Walked around the house and everything seemed fine. Wore the boots all day and had horrible pain on both the right and left outer sides of my foot where the insole of the booth came up and ended. Wore them again the next day and the same thing happened by mid-day. Went to REI and asked for assistance. She basically said take it or leave it if you want the boot. I was really surprised and shared I did not feel like a valued Customer. I really liked the shoe and to my luck when the return label came there was a $10.00 coupon to try again. I asked if I could put that towards the shoe and she put me on hold and came back with another price that was $10.00 less but still more than the original price. I just settled and paid the higher price since I really liked the booth. If REi would have had the booth for the sale price at the moment I would have purchased the Men's Targhee III Waterproof Mid Color: Forest Night/ Evening Primrose from that organization. Mainly because REI has EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE. That really counts when something goes wrong. I did not give a harsh rating of 4 stars -because Keen's booth only had one issue- running narrow. I treated the horrible Customer Service separately and I vote and score that with my dollars and cents going forward - 1 Star.

I wore rain pants cinched tight over the top of the boot, so the rain did not get in around the ankles, it got in by soaking through the leather and fabric and through the supposedly waterproof Keen-Dry barrier. I even tested the boots the next day after they were dry. I put them under a light spray from my shower head, careful to only wet the exterior and sure enough within a minute or two I could feel the damp spreading on the inside of the boot. What a ... I've been wearing 2 different Keen boots for about 10 years now, the Targhee III for hiking & Detroit's for work. I want too love them but have mixed feelings on them both. Let's start by saying they're both extremely comfortable right out the box, which is the only reason I've purchased 3 Detroits and 2 Targhee III each about 2-3 years apart. However the build quality was horrible on all 5 pairs with the exact same problems. MoreI've been wearing 2 different Keen boots for about 10 years now, the Targhee III for hiking & Detroit's for work. I want too love them but have mixed feelings on them both. Let's start by saying they're both extremely comfortable right out the box, which is the only reason I've purchased 3 Detroits and 2 Targhee III each about 2-3 years apart. However the build quality was horrible on all 5 pairs with the exact same problems. I've read many keen responses too bad reviews stating they are manufacturing defects. As you can see this is not a defect issue but a cheap standard and poor quality issue. It's pretty inconceivable for five different pairs of boots all bought in a 10 years span having the exact same issues. Sorry to say I believe I've owned my last pair of keens, which is unfortunate because they are one of the most comfortable boots I've ever worn.
