Keen Targhee Mid III Waterproof Boots - Chestnut/Mulch

Keen's iconic men's hiking boot brings an updated look for 2020 for all-terrain adventures. The Targhee III Mid WP has the fit, durability, and performance of the award-winning Targhee waterproof boot, but its rugged looks have been taken to a whole new dimension. The Targhee III Mid WP boots have been consciously created. One of the ways is by using envirnmentally preferred leather. Due to the fact that tanning leather is a dirty process, Keen source their hides from Leather Working Group-certified tanneries that use processes to reduce chemical use and the impact on our watersheds. Another way is through the use of a PFC-free water repellency - Perfluorinated Chemicals (PFCs) are commonly used as a durable water repellent on outdoor gear and footwear. But these compounds are suspected carcinogens, degrade very slowly and persist in the environment, so Keen have switched to alternative chemistry that’s safe yet still effective. The final way is through Cleansport NXT, as Keen have turned to nature to eliminate pesticides and biocides from going into the environment. the insoles are infused with microbes, which lay dormant and invisible in the material of the product, and when they come in contact with sweat they are activated and reduce the odour. The removable dual-density EVA insoles deliver comfort and arch support, whilst the Keen.Dry waterproof and breathable membrane keeps outside moisture at bay while allowing inside moisture to escape.

Comfortable boots, not as durable as I had hoped

Fall 2022: I bought a new pair of Keen Targhee III boots to replace an identical pair I had bought in summer 2018. They are comfortable, reasonably light weight, and grip well on rocky trails. The reason I bought a new pair was that the outsoles on my old ones were wearing out after 4 years of what I would describe as moderate use. See photos comparing soles of old and new boots. Also, the uppers were starting to separate from the soles on the outside edge of both boots near the toe (see photos).Regarding size, I bought these 1/2 size larger than normal to ensure that my flat feet wouldn't slide forward and jam my toes. I have NOT had that problem with these boots - the heel pocket grips my feet well.In comparing the new and old boots, their construction and materials appear to be identical; I haven't noticed any differences. The 2018 pair was made in Thailand, the 2022 pair was made in India.Bottom line: Nice boots, just don't expect them to last forever.

I was unpleasantly surprised at how fast he wore out the Ecco’s but it turns out they use a very soft rubber outsole which is amazingly great for confort but not as much for durability. At least he loved them :)

I used them for five months before reviewing and after a recent 11-mile hike on Mount Wilson, CA and my feet did not have any issues at all.If a new Durand model comes out next year with ventilation windows I would buy them quickly for my longer day hikes of 12-20 miles, while using the Targhee for shorter hikes and in the foothills. Overall, Targhee III has performed well for me.

Great boot for nearly every condition
15 November 2022

I purchased these as my first ever pair of waterproof boots. My plan was to use these in colder/wetter areas where my trail runners would not perform very well. For testing purposes, I have used these boots in a number of different areas and climates.I was on a trip to Las Vegas, and decided to use these on a 5 mile hike around red rocks. Humidity was 40%, temperature 85F/29C. My feet almost immediately began to sweat. At the end of the short hike, my feet were wet, but no blisters. I determined that the desert was not an ideal location to use these boots.I was then on another trip to northern Japan (November 2022), where I have been on 2 different hikes with these boots. My boot setup includes a Superfeet Green insole, injinji liner, and darn tough boot socks. (all merino wool). The first hike was to the top of Hakkoda mountain. The trail conditions varied from muddy to compact snow and temperatures varied between 25F - 35F(-3C - 1C). These boots were great on this trail. My feet stayed dry until I misjudged the depth of a puddle and dunked my right foot, but my foot stayed dry with the wool socks and I finished the days hike without any issues. We stayed overnight at a shelter on the mountain, and the boot was dry in the morning. The next trip I went on was 19 miles on a cold/wet trail. The hike started cool 35F (1C) and ended around 40F (4C). It started raining midway through the hike. The trail was muddy, rocky, with lots of leaves covering hard surfaces. The traction was excellent. At the end of the hike, my feet were dry and I experienced no issues at all.Overall, these boots are excellent. I would give these boots 5 stars if they performed well year round in all conditions. If I lived/hiked in Alaska or Greenland, then they would def get 5 stars.

I really wanted to like and love this boot, but...
4 November 2022

Everything about this boot seemed perfect for me. Previously, I went through 2 pair of Vasque New Briers over the last 30 years that I simply wore slap out but LOVED them, unfortunately they did away with good QA/QC in their factories and are no longer an option. SO, got these. Wore them walking the dog 3-4 times for about 12 miles (pavement) - felt GREAT! Then I wore them on our first backpacking trip (30 miles total). The first 10 miles or so were phenomenal, boot felt like an old pair of gloves. But started noticing my left foot with pain around the cuboid bone/upper 5th metatarsal. Since I'd never had that before, I took off the boot, inspected for dirt or foreign objects - nothing. Kept going toward camp, problem continued and worsened. At camp had time to fully inspect the boot again, and compare it to the other. That's when I realized the left boot did not receive the same amount of internal padding around the lace eyelets that the right boot had; this Quality Control issue was the sole cause of my pain and my bad purchase. REI graciously allowed me to return them for a different brand; if they (KEEN) had just done their proper due diligence in the quality control process of manufacturing I'd have this boot for another 10 years, too bad. It's so frustrating that companies seem to be ditching quality for quantity, first Vasque now Keen.

MEN'S TARGHEE III WATERPROOF MID COLOR: FOREST NIGHT/EVENING PRIMROSE SIZE: 8 - Extremely Narrow
21 December 2022

I am a woman who wears a size 9 regular width. I normally purchase a wone's 9.5 in a hiking booth to allow for the thick wool socks. The men's size 8 is usually more than big enough and normally a little too wide. I tried this booth on and loved the fit not too wide and my big toe was position perfect. Walked around the house and everything seemed fine. Wore the boots all day and had horrible pain on both the right and left outer sides of my foot where the insole of the booth came up and ended. Wore them again the next day and the same thing happened by mid-day. Went to REI and asked for assistance. The representative concluded this particular model of Keen's booth was running a little narrow. We tried on others and a men's 8 was perfect. The representative concluded this particular model of Keen's booth was running a little narrow. We tried on others and a men's 8 was perfect. However, I tried on a men's 8.5 and the pain went away immediately. I purchased the men's booth because dark green is my absolute favorite color and the yellow made them look a little more like a women's booth. Fortunately, I had a need to break these booths in for an upcoming trip to New Orleans and I was under the 30-day return window. I returned the boots. I spoke to Keen's representative who was being a little difficult about honoring the sale price to order a half size larger in the exact same shoe. She basically said take it or leave it if you want the boot. I was really surprised and shared I did not feel like a valued Customer. I really liked the shoe and to my luck when the return label came there was a $10.00 coupon to try again. I asked if I could put that towards the shoe and she put me on hold and came back with another price that was $10.00 less but still more than the original price. I just settled and paid the higher price since I really liked the booth. If REi would have had the booth for the sale price at the moment I would have purchased the Men's Targhee III Waterproof Mid Color: Forest Night/ Evening Primrose from that organization. Mainly because REI has EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE. That really counts when something goes wrong. I did not give a harsh rating of 4 stars -because Keen's booth only had one issue- running narrow. I treated the horrible Customer Service separately and I vote and score that with my dollars and cents going forward - 1 Star.

Probably Good Enough
24 September 2022

I was in need of some new dog walking boots so I went to the flagship store to take advantage of the Labor Day sale to see if I could purchase some boots that I could actually try on before purchasing. I have smaller than average sized feet and brick and mortar retailers no longer seem to be willing to stock smaller men's size hiking boots, apparently thinking that us males with smaller sized feet can just fit into women's sizes (we can't because of obvious differences between male and female anatomy). I was able to get the attention of a floor person in the shoe department who tried to discourage me on the possibility of finding any men's boots in my size, but after much pleading, I was able to get him to go back and look anyway for either a size 7 or size 7.5. He returned shortly with those sizes of this particular boot, dumped them on the bench and left never to be seen again. Fortunately I am an experienced hiker and I was able to determine that the size 7 fit OK. So far they have been satisfactory for dog walking and I tried them out on a real hike where they were acceptable but not outstanding since I do a lot of off trail hiking and scrambling and I don't really trust them for steep slopes that require edging. They are perfectly fine for easy trail hiking and fit OK for wide feet which makes them perfect for inner city dog walking.

Quality control & Poor materials
6 January 2023

I've been wearing 2 different Keen boots for about 10 years now, the Targhee III for hiking & Detroit's for work. I want too love them but have mixed feelings on them both. Let's start by saying they're both extremely comfortable right out the box, which is the only reason I've purchased 3 Detroits and 2 Targhee III each about 2-3 years apart. However the build quality was horrible on all 5 pairs with the exact same problems. All three pairs of Detroits leaked within 2 weeks, The glue around the soul and tow start to separate very quickly, which is probably why they leak and the lugs started tearing off after 6 months. I've read many keen responses too bad reviews stating they are manufacturing defects. As you can see this is not a defect issue but a cheap standard and poor quality issue. It's pretty inconceivable for five different pairs of boots all bought in a 10 years span having the exact same issues. Sorry to say I believe I've owned my last pair of keens, which is unfortunate because they are one of the most comfortable boots I've ever worn.

Very Disappointed
13 November 2022

Got these boots in March 2022. Soon after receiving them in the mail, I wore them on a 4 day, 3 night backpacking trip in Shenendoah NP and thought they did great. They were grippy, waterproof and comfortable. Comfort is very important because I have bunions and need a wide toe box.Since then, as of November 2022, I wear them nearly every day to walk the dog. I wear boots because of dew or rain on the grass in the park where we walk. Also, I wear them on weekends when I work around the yard. Full disclosure, my front yard has a steep hill I need to traverse with the lawnmower. So, I wear them a lot but they don't really get used on especially difficult terrain. Full disclosure, my front yard has a steep hill I need to traverse with the lawnmower. So, I wear them a lot but they don't really get used on especially difficult terrain. The main thing is they go through a daily cycle of getting wet in the morning and drying out indoors for the next 23 hours. The durability of the boots has been poor. The outer sole has become detached on both boots in multiple different places. In fact, the sole came entirely unglued on the left boot. I have glued them back on multiple times. The shoe glue I bought on Amazon seems to work better than the factory-glued sole. Also, on both boots, the leather on either side of the upper has split open revealing the fabric beneath. It also reveals how thin is the material making up the leather upper. So I got about 8 months of daily dog walks on the dewy grass and one modest backpacking trip out of these boots. Very disappointing indeed.

Very Good With A Proviso

I’m active and have older feet that take a pounding in northeastern Minnesota, and I decided to give Keen a try for a lightweight trail boot. I use the boots for everything, walking, dog walking, trail maintenance, and general work around the cabin and my land. Quit often one finds the rocky uneven terrain that there is seldom an even foot plant. It’s Probably about as rugged a terrain as I’ve ever worn out a pair of boots. They made it about four months before things began to unravel. The Rand is beginning to separate, the waterproofing has disappeared, and in areas, the sole is separating from the boot. A bit of Shoo-Goo will help with this to make the boots serviceable, but it’s time for a new pair of boots after 4 months. The sole is still near perfect. A bit of Shoo-Goo will help with this to make the boots serviceable, but it’s time for a new pair of boots after 4 months. The sole is still near perfect. Little to no wear on the edges. So why get a new pair after such a little time? The boots are lightweight, they protect my feet, and they give me confidence on almost every foot plant. Think of it this way. Good running shoes cost as much, but can’t handle this terrain, and I cover, on average, 5-8 miles per day. That’s at least 600 miles on some of the most rugged terrain you can find, handled by a lightweight boot. Shop for a deal, as the boots are worth it. Your feet are worth it.
