Budget Film

A great film for a budget price. The 24 exposure roll is just about the cheapest film you can get so it is great for trying out new things, like making sure a newly aquired camera is working. Being a budget film it isn't particularly fine grained, and there is noticeable grain in all my shots. The dynamic range doesn't appear particularly special either, so expect blown out sky with dark shadows. That said, you can get some lovely shots within the constraints of the film.

Cheap But Grainy

I have to say this was the first B&W roll I really didn't care for at all. It's cheap so that's convenient but it was unbelievably grainy, extremely high contrast, and just not what I expect from an iso 100 film. Not that I expected Pan F Plus but it really took me by surprise when I got the film back from the lab. I suppose it's not a bad film I'm just very lukewarm on it. I'll most likely try it once more but it's definitely not one I'll be reaching for. Without actually having shooting a roll of its higher speed sibling, this roll came out like what I imagine Kentmere Pan 400 would look like if pushed to 800.

Personally I love Kentmere 100! I know it's a 'budget' film stock but so far I've rarely been disappointed with the results I've achieved. The grain is fine, it's punchy in the right situations, and pretty forgiving in the wrong ones.I've not really tested it for portraits yet, but for architecture and macro shots I think the grain gives a pretty crisp image, especially when considering the money spent. Shadow details can drop off pretty significantly in really contrasty, low light scenes, but that's expected for such a slow speed film - my poor results here were probably due to my ineptitudes more than the film stock itself.I think in terms of Ilford stocks of a similar speed, I do prefer FP4, but I will always have some Kentmere 100 in my freezer for times ... MorePersonally I love Kentmere 100! Great film with good contrast.
25 August 2022

When I came back to photography in mid 2020, this was one of the first B&W films I tried, and having not developed any film myself since around 1989, I was using a Monobath developer for ease. To be perfectly honest, I wasn't too impressed with the results I got then, but that's probably a case of my lack of practice with both camera and developing, or maybe the film and Monobath developer aren't really a good match for eachother?Whatever the reason, I decided that now my skills have developed, and I'm using separate developer, stop bath, and fixer, it was time to try Kentmere 100 again...with much better results, I'm pleased to say!I shot this roll over 2 weekends, both being bright and sunny, and I developed it in HC110 dilution H for 16 mins, as per Massive Dev ... MoreWhen I came back to photography in mid 2020, this was one of the first B&W films I tried, and having not developed any film myself since around 1989, I was using a Monobath developer for ease. The resulting images are quite high contrast, so maybe I'll try shooting my next roll in softer light, rather than the bright light of a summer afternoon. This film represents fantastic value for money, and gives great images. I'll definitely be using it again.

Great, for the price.
28 June 2024

For £5.50 a roll, you couldn't really ask for more. The film has quite a large and noticeable grain, and the contrast in the highlights could be better. ,I like a bit of grain in black and white photography, but if you wanted smooth tones, this wouldn't be the film for you.For a film, when you want to experiment with new cameras, techniques, or subjects, this is about as good as you can get. It also encourages a "take the shot" mentality rather than worrying if every shot is worth it. When you think you can get four rolls of this for one roll of Ektar (yes, I know the applications are different) it really is an excellent option to get started.

Low Grain & Great Price.
27 June 2023

I purchased several rolls of this Kentmere 100 36exp film to take on holiday to Yorkshire with me. I have used Kentmere 400 and been very happy with the results, as its been a lovely summer I grabbed the 100 and headed off on holiday.I booked onto a Process & Print course with the lovely Rachel from Little Vintage Photography whilst in Liverpool and chose to develop 2 of these rolls and WOW just WOW... I am blown away by the fine details, low grain qualities of this film, lovely tones, nice and contrasty for bright environments and it is very forgiving when settings arn't quite right. I developed these with Ilford ID-11, 1:1 at 20c for 11.5 mins & Scanned them at home on my Pixl- Latr I purchased from Analogue Wonderland. Perfect go-to B&W
17 August 2024

With the cost of film ever-rising, Kentmere offers a strong lineup of affordable B&W stocks. I found the 100 to be flexible with a really pleasing grain structure that Analogue Wonderland then developed and scanned really well.My next batch I’ll be experimenting with pushing to see how a higher contrast works out. Cannot recommend this film enough for beginners or the budget conscious.

[Rewarded Review] Best price / quality compromise for me.
14 August 2024

I'm a dreadful photographer. But I'm a great camera collector, with around 150 film cameras to feed. At the same time I operate on a VERY tight budget. To stretch my film and developing budget further I buy 36 exposure rolls or Kentmere 100 (enough to get free freight from B&H) and shoot each roll in 2 cameras. Manual cameras get first 18 shots, since I can rewind them with the leader out. Then a motorized camera gets the second 18 shots. I shoot the whole collection at least once a year, at half the expense. Kentmere 100 also develops very well in Caffenol-C, made from instant coffee, which is practically free.

[Rewarded Review] Pleasing results and more...

I'm returning to B&W film photography after a many decades long hiatus and long love affair with digital. At this point in my life I can't afford top drawer film. If I'm not mistaken, Ilford is the parent company of this film stock. The results far exceeded my expectations. I'm really looking forward to the results of my using Kentmore in my medium format RB67 camera.Since this film is at a good price point it may convince a younger generation to try film. Since old technology is having a renaissance, flip phones & cassette recorders, some younger people are now attracted to film. We can only hope. [Rewarded Review] Wide latitude inexpensive film.
27 August 2024

I like this stuff. It gives a wide latitude and realistic contrast so I can determine what level of contrast I want later when scanning, processing or printing. Allows you to goof up exposure by a couple of stops but still end up with a salvageable negative. My best negatives thus far are with this film.
