I am always amazed at the range of Kiehl's products - from daily skin care, to treatments, rich body care, family toiletry products, and hair care as well. I've been a fan of Kiehl's skincare for some time, but had never tried any of the haircare until I was given the Amino Acid Shampoo and Conditioner. This shampoo contains amino acid and coconut oil to clean the hair gently, as well as wheat proteins and wheat starch which are claimed to add body. It is described as suitable for all hair types and as a mild shampoo, gentle enough to use every day. It is free of silicone and parabens I am instantly attracted to anything coconut, it reminds me of the beach and summertime. My hair, which is straight, quite fine but abundant, and coloured, felt soft and silky afterwards, and still had it's usual body. There was no issue at all with it feeling "weighed down" or limp - and I do know what that feels like, whenever I have my hair coloured. I have fairly dry, coloured hair with a slightly oily scalp, but both scalp and ends felt perfectly clean after using Amino Acid. It might be counter-intuitive to think of coconut oil with an oily scalp, but in this case it works.\n\nThe lather - I have to say it doesn't lather quite as well as my usual shampoo but, with an oily scalp, I naturally double shampoo. The first shampoo to remove any excess oil, the second to really clean the hair. On the second shampoo, with Amino Acid the lather is rich and creamy, exactly as I want, but also easy to rinse out. The coconut scent afterwards is wonderful, it lingers but is not overpowering. There is nothing better than having been at the beach, hot and sticky, and then washing all of that away with a coconut-scented product. It reminds me of those times.\n\nThe packaging is fairly plain, on the face of it - just a plastic bottle, but what I really like about Kiehl's packaging is the trademark cursive writing, and the fact that all the ingredients and directions are right there conveniently on the bottle,not on a leaflet, so you can read them clearly.\n\nThe price is the only drawback - it is very high for a product that will be used as often as a shampoo. So I would recommend that people use it as I do - as an extra summer shampoo for those times when you have been in the pool every day and need to step up the shampooing. \n\n

Hated it at first, but now it's a favorite.

When I first used this shampoo I hated how it felt. I thought it made my hair feel limp, almost sticky, and a bit greasy. I decided to keep using it since it didn't irritate my skin (I'm very sensitive and shampoos can cause eczema flares for me) and after 2 weeks of daily use I've noticed an incredible change in the feeling and appearance of my hair. Gone is the weird sticky feeling and now my hair is soft, shiny, bouncy, and healthy. My ends feel hydrated and so soft. I've even noticed less hairfall in the shower and in my brush as well. My scalp -- normally irritated and itchy -- feels normal and healthy.I think this shampoo is so gentle that if you were using something laden with silicones before it doesn't get the buildup off. Healthier Hair

I waited awhile to do this review, I wanted to see how my hair responded to using Kiehl's Since 1851 Amino Acid Shampoo and Conditioner. I have been using it for 5 months now and I am impressed. I have always been "cheap" when it has come to shampoo and conditioner, but I was having a lot of issues with my hair. My volume was flat, my natural waves always seemed limp, and the worst part was that every time I brushed or washed my hair I was pulling out clumps. I switched to Kiehl's and it is like night and day. My natural waves are back, my hair is growing back in areas where my hair was thinning, my hair isn't falling out by the bunches anymore and my hair is soft and has volume again. Honest Review from a Super Picky Product Person!

So, after my first wash I was like "this stuff is amazing" and I bought more. I am an everyday/every other day hair washer with fine hair that tangles very easy. I read some reviews that said this product isn't great for people like me. After about a week of use, I began to notice it being difficult to comb through my hair after shampoo/condition, which bothered me because I like to comb smooth through my hair. I did like the softness after a blow dry though. I wasn't entirely ready to give up. I thought of one trick, I would do a quick rinse but not rinse conditioner completely, leaving some conditioner in my hair while wet. Excellent! I could comb through perfect and still blow dry to a soft finish with no filmy greasy residue. Itchy scalp, oily hair. Not the shampoo for me.

I used Kiehl’s color treated shampoo and conditioner faithfully for years and when they discontinued them for no known reason I switched to the amino acid shampoo. It’s been a few weeks and I’m so disappointed. My scalp is terribly itchy which has literally never happened to me with a shampoo before. Also my oily hair which always did fine before with every other day washing is now barely able to make it a day. This shampoo barely gets my hair clean. I’m so sad because I love Kiehl’s products but I don’t think they have a shampoo that will work for me anymore.

Made my hair coarse and lifeless

I literally thought I was experiencing some sort of health or hormonal issue because over the few months I used this product my hair became and dull and coarse and barely moved anymore, it was alarming. I decided to bust out my old cheap shampoo (Dove) and my hair was immediately back to its bouncy, shiny self right away. It says this product is for damaged hair but to be honest, over the course of using this product, it looked more and more damaged every day. :\ I do like Khiels products alot otherwise though.

Phthalates/PEGs - sad to say bye to this shampoo

Phthalates and PEGs. I wish I could continue using this but, like many others, I’m trying to be more cognizant of the ingredients I put in and on my body. I received a canned response on Instagram from Kiehl’s regarding the “safety” of phthalates and PEGs. There is no telling what the ingredient “fragrance/perfume” includes.Hopefully Kiehl’s follows the industry’s and consumer trend and reformulates to something cleaner and healthier.

Scalp Treatment

I have very fine but voluminous, long straight hair for the past 3 or 4 months I have had persistent problems with a sore and itchy scalp which developed sores, I have tried all of the products at my local chemist, I have been to my GP tried a prescribed lotion and tried all the home remedies from apple cider vinegar rinses to oatmeal shampoos. Then I remembered I had been given a sample of shampoo and conditioner from Kiehls and used it. To my complete surprise after only 1 wash and condition my scalp became much better, now after my 2nd use it is almost back to normal. I have ordered more online and I will make sure I never run out of this. Oh and by the way my hair stays cleaner for longer and feels beautifully soft. Simply works!

I was having a fairly mild dry scalp issue for the past few months and at some point was advised to try/change shampoo Tried a small bottle formulated for dryness/itchiness from a different but known brand in the market Ive been using, but other than the “cool feeling” during shower -I didn’t feel much any difference. I’m a Kiehl’s skin products user, though it never occurred to me to check and stayed with my previous shampoo brand instead. But after switching to and using Kiehl’s shampoo with Amino Acid few days and not feeling any dryness I knew this could be it. I bought a bigger bottle after I finished the first small one and finally purchased their 1 liter.Light and gentle, I’m sold for life :)

I know a lot of people really really like this product. I have had a lot of success with Kiehl's in the past, so I got the shampoo and conditioner set. It doesn't work for my hair - it leaves a kind of film on my hair near my scalp. It feels dirtier after I wash it than it does before, even if it's been several days since I washed it. It honestly feels as if I didn't get all the conditioner out of my hair (but I know I did, because it happens no matter how thoroughly I rinse or scrub, and as soon as I switch to another shampoo & conditioner the issue is resolved).
