Maybe it's the isolation taking its toll but this may be the best piece of kitchen equipent I have ever bought. Okay, maybe the matching food processor is a better all-rounder but it doesn't give such enjoyment as when the bread gently lowers into the slots and soon after, it rises up perfectly and I emphasise perfectly toasted. The sound when the toast is ready is like a the gong that rises you from your meditation, sure in the knowledge the world is a better place now you have such perfectly browned toast. It weighs as much as a small car and even the crumb trays feel like they were hewn from solid marble. With a five year warranty, I have nothing to worry about. It might seem like a lot of money for a toaster but it is much more than a simple toaster, it is a bringer of joy and contentment and how can you put a price on that. Don't thank me, just share the joy.

I bought this toaster and loved it for 18 months. It then went wrong before Christmas 19, so I used the guarantee to send it back. KitchenAid had my toaster for 3 months before they sent me a 'new' toaster saying mine was beyond repair. (They didn't care we were 3 months without a toaster, having promised me a 7 day turnaround - so we had to buy a temporary one.) The 'new' toaster is instantly faulty and it often turns itself on for no reason, so we have to turn it off at the plug for safety. We will be purchasing another make toaster now from John Lewis and will cut our loses on this one. Hopefully this will help you in your decision making - if you're happy for an 18-24 month toaster life then Ive no doubt you'll enjoy it. Lovely unit, very sophisticated though not sure how sophisticated a toaster needs to be! There seemed to be a lack of instructions which is why I did not go 5 stars. I know I could go to the internet but how much time do I need to spend figuring out a toaster when we are mad busy! Cannot deny the aestetics though...

This is a truely wonderful toaster. It is beautifully made, looks amazing in the kitchen, and, most importantly, it makes great toast in all of the slots. The loading is pure theatre with the lights, the slow descent and the gentle "ding" when the toastis ready is turning me into one of Pavlov's dogs. Finally, the keep warm function is also rather special. Highly recommended.
This toaster is brilliant. Has various settings and the toast comes out nicely browned. It’s quirky too the toast lowers itself and pops up when it’s ready and makes a noise to let you know it’s ready. If after 45 seconds you don’t take the toast out it lowers itself back down and goes onto a keep warm setting. It’s not cheap but worth the money and it looks good and goes with my other Kitchen Aid pieces.
Looks great. But the LED lights on the toaster can intermittently stay on even when there is no toasting action going on. Makes a satisfying ding when the toast descends which is nice. But to be 100% honest, aesthetics aside, you could find a lower price toaster that does the toasting bit just as good as this, so you are really paying a premium for the look and build.
If you are lucky, ou get to a stage in your life where you are in a position to stop just buying the cheapest items and then replacing them every couple of years, but rather go for something more durable and with a few bells and whistles. This is an expensive toaster all right, but it doesn't just do the main job of toasting excellently, it also has some lovely extras, like the way it will keep toast warm for 3 minutes if you do not take it out straight after toasting & the handy toasted sandwich holder that slots into the machine when you fancy a quick croque monsieur. Although I am quite capable of lowering toast myself, I still marvel at how you can just lay the toast in the slots and by magic they are lowered for toasting as a cheerful little chime plays. Kids love watching that as well.Bottom line: this is an item that most people use nearly every day, so if you can afford it and want a really good toaster with a wow factor, spoil yourself :)
I've always wanted one of these since I used one on a cruise ship. It's just amazing to watch the toast glide up and down automatically to a chime and flashing LEDs. It also makes great toast and the toasted sandwiches (using the cradle supplied) are wonderful. Hopeful the feeling of robustness will translate into a long life. Not cheap, but delighted so far...
This is the best toaster I have ever owned. It looks great while it is doing nothing and has a touch of theatre when the bread lowers itself into the toaster and then rises back up as toast. The warming function works really well and it consistently produces evenly browned toast. As with other Kitchenaid appliances, you get a little beep when your toast is ready. I also love the colour (candy apple red). All in all, not the cheapest toaster but well worth it.
Our experience with this toaster is very similar to that of the other negative reviews on this page from Richardx46 and Jules1b.Although it looks great it is not fit for purpose - it cannot reliably toast bread.Since buying this toaster from John Lewis we have so far had two units replaced as they did not toast evenly on both sides and routinely left one side of a slice untoasted. With our third unit, the heating element blew on one side so it could only toast two slices at a time. As it was still within the 5-year warranty period we thought we would give the toaster one last chance. We took the unit to John Lewis in Oxford Street at the beginning of April to be repaired......two months later we are STILL waiting for it to be returned. The after-care support from ... MoreOur experience with this toaster is very similar to that of the other negative reviews on this page from Richardx46 and Jules1b.Although it looks great it is not fit for purpose - it cannot reliably toast bread.Since buying this toaster from John Lewis we have so far had two units replaced as they did not toast evenly on both sides and routinely left one side of a slice untoasted. With our third unit, the heating element blew on one side so it could only toast two slices at a time. We have received no updates on when the toaster will be repaired or replaced.I have spent two hours on calls since Monday this week to John Lewis Customer Support trying to find out where our toaster is. I was given various assurances that John Lewis would contact me by phone or email with an update. It is now Saturday and I am still waiting for someone to get back to me.In short, a disappointing (and hugely overpriced) product from KitchenAid, and a very disappointing customer-care experience from John Lewis. AVOID.
