Back reading means no making holes in the substance being measured. Hold it flat to the area in question and you get a percentage readout instantly. Slide it around a wall or ceiling and you get instant results. We have an RV and there was a leak in the roof. I needed to know if I had to tear apart the roof or not and if so how much. I hoped to drive the moisture out after sealing up the outside. I opened some ventilation spots and ran a heater. I was able to watch the moisture levels drop until it was OK. I could also see where the problem areas were. These are also good to see what the water content of lumber is. Checking a boat for waterlogged hull. Checking a ceiling for leaks before any damage shows.

Detected wet areas behind a wall. Had the drywall removed only to find metal that was probably causing it to go off. I don't think this is unique to this brand but more to the technology of these moisture detectors that do not use probes. I had a "professional" detect the leak with a different brand prior to my purchasing this item. I purchased this tool to confirm their findings only for both of us to be wrong.

I can't speak to the accuracy. As for the other things: OPERATION: Simple to use. No manual required. Don't have to enter the species of wood, just choose either Hardwood or Softwood (or Drywall or Masonry). BATTERY: Requires a screwdriver to open the battery cover. That's a gratuitous annoyance. Battery covers should always be openable without a screwdriver unless the item is a toy for small children who might swallow the battery. PACKAGING: Uses hard plastic bubble which is non-renewable and a pain to open. There's been a trend now for years towards "frustration-free" packaging. Klein is behind the times.

I have nothing to compare it to but this moisture meter seems to be a real winner. You turn it on, select the mode and then place it on the object. It reads instantly. I purchased this meter to measure the moisture in hardwood lumber prior to milling in my woodshop. But now I basically know the moisture content of every item in my home. :). Im glad I purchased this.
Just received my moisture meter and it doesn't appear to work. All the reading it is giving me are WAY below what the wood is likely at. So low that none of the LEDs light up and this is the even on wood I know for sure is still wet. Disappointment.
Used to check the moisture content on hardwood flooring before installation. Gave repeatable numbers and seemed accurate. Easy to operate as well.
I was surprised how fast and easy it was to take readings and to switch between hardwood, softwood, drywall, and masonry settings. The digits are easy to read. I have confidence in the quality (deserved or not) simply because other Klein tools I have used in the past have been high quality. The plastic casing seems sturdy enough to tolerate the inevitable rough handling.
I do water restoration and mold assessment. If you dont want to spend $1000-$1500 on a pinned survey master this is the way to go. The price for the quality of this piece of equipment is an absolute steal, holding and using this tool you can feel its quality. Its very accurate, but the absolute BEST part about this besides the price is the alarm and beeping it makes when its over a certain moisture content, this is phenomenal because it lets customers know that somethings wet, despite them maybe not knowing how the tool works! If you dont want a $1000 survey master just for the pins, this is the way to go. Klein please make a pinned version of this!!!
This meter appears well built and is easy to use. We had a leak from a shower valve and the drywall opposite got all wet, so we're using it to measure how well it's drying out after blowing a fan at it for several days. We just slide the meter along the wall and can sense where the wet spots are. The display is large and easy to read, and the meter has modes for drywall, masonry, hardwoods and softwoods. It was well priced and appears to do exactly as it claims. Although I can't be sure of its absolute accuracy, it certainly provides an easy to understand measurement showing how the moisture level changes as you move along a wall.
I've had a few moisture meters since I started turning in 2008. One of the cheap ones I initially bought was ADOA (almost dead on arrival - meaning it lasted only a couple days). I gave my last cheap one away to a cousin who had a need for moisture content in woody plant stalks. Then in my effort to replace this one, happened upon the pinless concept. I tried the Klein out of the box without reading one word of the instructions - it was so intuitive and easy to use, I still haven't read them. Very nice bright reading display, drywall, hardwood, softwood, and masonry are the modes, a nice "Hold" feature freezes the content, easy to position accurately, lightweight, but very sturdy construction, and very repetitive over time for the same piece of stock and the ... MoreI've had a few moisture meters since I started turning in 2008. Highly recommend! I have very high confidence that this meter is giving me very accurate information every time.
