This was my first sheet with colour sheet film. Previously I had used black and white film and been fairly happy with the results and spotted some errors... and then onto the expensive colour film. I had a good idea of the scenes I was going to take. Fortunately the range of light in the scene was not too wide so I just took a good average exposure reading. I used a 210mm lens on the Intrepid 4x5 Mk V. I think it was about 1/15th second a f32. I processed the film at home using the Stearman Press and the chemicals were the Bellini C41 pack.I was really pleased with the colours on this image and really makes a case for 4x5.

With the demise of film in most new cameras, finding suitable products for professional work is becoming harder. Only the best can survive in such a market and Kodak Porta 160 for 4x5 is still available due to its superior properties. It must be the best film currently available for 4x5 colour photography. Rich beautiful skin tones unmatched by any digital counterpart. On the downside, it's becoming hard to find 50 packs making the less economical 10 pack the only option. Let's hope this film is available for years to come!

Really solid film to rely on for good results all the time. Fairly forgiving as well which makes it a bit of a workhorse film that is still capable of producing the best of results with lovely colours.

I've been using Kodak's 4 x 5 Portra 160 Color Film for landscape photography, and I'm very pleased with the results. The color renditions are accurate and subtle, and the exposure latitude is generous, with little visible grain. Highly recommended!
I love this film so much, the colors are very natural and beautiful, a little softer than the Ektar 100 but also very sharp. It is a very good all rounder for color photography, I use it as a 100 asa film to give it some extra details in the shadows. It is easy to handle and to load, the lab I use seems to like it, results are great every time... Thank you B&H for stocking this amazing product, I will continue to purchase it!
I use Portra 160 to complement the Portra 400 and Ektar 100 that I also like to shoot. I shoot a lot of colour negative film. Portra 160 has the very best rendition of human skin (any race), natural colours and textures and the brilliance of natural illumination -- especially bright and sunny scenes. I use it for studio work, landscape work and even for long exposure night cityscapes. This last use is not its strongest suit. Portra 160 holds the colours together well on long exposures but reciprocity failure becomes quite strong as exposure times lengthen. For anything over a few minutes I would double the time you think you need as a starting point.
I absolutely love Portra 160. The grain is practically nonexistent in 4x5, and the colors are almost dreamlike, especially when overexposed a touch. I tend to rate it at ISO 100, but it can handle even more than that. Great for portraits AND landscapes. Magical stuff!
Photographing large groups (200+) of people outdoors in sunlight, no fill light. Scan in, output digitally. This film is close to neutral. No red faces. Excellent tonal range. No single color pops just attractive, accurate and honest subject representation.
Next to B&W film, this film has the widest dynamic range of any color film. While many would not use this for landscape photography, I use it for just this purpose because of the beautiful tonality. Any of its shortcomings for this purpose such as lack of color saturation or color balance can be corrected by computer, whereas dynamic range can't be corrected. This film has enabled me to get certain images impossible to accomplish even by HDR digital means.
I wanted to go back to 4x5 film after a while spent with my canon 5d mark II. But wow, so expensive for 10 sheets! and they don't even make boxes of 50 anymore. I'm disappointed and sad about dying film. But this isn't the place. anyway, you can't beat portra 160 4x5. Unless it's 8x10
