I've always wanted a synthesizer to play around with and now I have one. I must admit it's a can of worms to say the least with literary 100's of settings which I struggled to get to grips with but I'm getting there. Great fun, the only disappointment was I thought it came with internal speakers, my fault in not fully reading spec of model purchased but no problem I use earphones or a mini plug in speaker system.

I was looking for a good reliable entry level synth and this fits the bill. I bought this mainly to play and experiment with. I've always enjoyed playing around with them when I saw them in stores and was interested in getting one at home to find out what all of the knobs and switches really do. I don't know if I will ever use it to actually create music but it will provide many hours of enjoyment discovering just what all it can do.

I understood that midi was info and not tone but that was about the extent of my knowledge. Oscillators, filters, LFOs were a complete mystery to me along with how to get the various synths to handshake over midi. Buying this synth and a Beatstep pro have dramatically changed this. Simply reading the two manuals has revealed the nuts and bolts of synthesis clearly. I have learned so much in a couple days just taking the time to learn hands on. Taking the above in to account, the synth sounds pretty good to me. I can't really judge the tone until I have spent more time with it to see the possibilities but what Ive heard is good. Korg certainly makes solid products with no visible corners cut, quality materials, sturdy construction, etc. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a synth but especially as a gateway synth for the uninitiated: it changed my GAS from all guitar to guitar and synth gear.

GET this poly synth machine
5 July 2014

Pros: TOO MANY Cons: small keyboard.. The Bottom Line: if you want to PLAY with UNLIMITED sounds, BUY IT. but be patient.. this is not another casio toy. this is based on ANALOG synths of many decades ago, and it is POLY, which means you can press many keys at once to play chords, it is not a mono device. it uses semi decent dsp digital chips, that, in the final run , give you very close to ANALOG synth sounds, and Great FLEXIBILITY. if you carefully see the specs.. this tiny thing is surprisingly SIMILAR to their far more expensive MS 2000 analog synth !! microkorg has 128 preset sounds, but wow oh wow... those knobs , let you EDIT the heck out of them, so you can create your own sounds to no end ! perhaps a far cousin to the famed NIkon F 70 camera, this is a ... MorePros: TOO MANY Cons: small keyboard.. YOU need PATIENCE, and get a paper notebook and pen, and write down some of those settings ! it is mainly for experimentation. you can try things here, that you only dreamt of.. UNBELIEVABLE FLEXIBILITY. they call it analog MODELING synth for this reason. i dont recommend the WRITE FUNCTION.. that erases the pre programmed sound to replace it with your sound. so, just write down the settings, and you can pretty much duplicate it.. within a minute. you will need PATIENCE,and at least 20-40hrs Practice till you begin to understand the depths of this machine. if you are Already into synths, in only a few hrs you should get the hang of it.. but even if you are a newbie (with patience),.. you will have so much FUN !!! output is stereo of course. KEYS ARE TINY , if you have HUGE hands, GOOD BYE and sayonnara.... if you have tiny hands, you will go ape over this machine with never-ending adventures ! i actually got a good piano sound, and a helicopter sound in total of about 40mins of playing around.. by the 3rd session.. ( 4-5 hrs into learning this machine ) i ALSO USE the zoom R24 8 input recorder...with this, to create Layer after layer of sound ( much like enya...) and in final mixdown wow...awesomeness... JOY oh joy of creation. if you want similar power, but have little patience, and yearn for presets, and need instant repeatability, use the OTHER KORG machines, like the Triton, etc etc. this machine is made to sit down, have FUN and Experiment with ! it has 2 audio in, and midi in, out and thru...NO usb... of course, one can get pretty serious and stick in another identical or different KORG machine in series, or a guitar or two mics, etc etc... and PROCESS the OUTPUT of one machine, by playing with the 2nd machine too !!!! Wave shaping and molding to no end .. n o LI MITS to imagination ! it has a (vocoder ) condenser type mic too..( defeatable too ) and you can sound like Darth Vader.. or just let water drip into your sink, and reshape that waveform !! their manual/ book must be kept aside at all times. too much to read, and you cant mesmerize it all ! arpegiator is very useful...not just on or off...can be bit more complex for those with creativity....your option ! prices have come down to half from original usd 500 so this is a good time to get it...before it stops !!! i find this , better than their xl version too.

Great versatile little synth!

It,s compact size can fool folks into thinking this little beast is seriously limited but just a quick run-through of its pre-sets will dispell such thoughts. Another wonderful advent of modern technology, meaning that back in the 80s a keyboard like this would have been three times the price and at least twice the size, this mini-keyed (remember those old "Sears" and "Radio Shack" toy synthesizers?) synthesizer is a great amalgam of digital and analogue. The sounds are crisp and all modifiable, as well as each patch can be saved (over-writing the presets mind you). The MicroKorg also comes with an arpegiator as well as a vocoder, has USB as well as MIDI plugs (MIDI IN, OUT, and THRU). Some sounds will be very easily and wildly modified using the parameters and knobs (you have to love buttons on analogue keyboards!) while others require a more in-depth "programming" to be modified. But in general a highly recommended synthesizer!

I'm getting into recording music and I wanted synthesizer tones and vocoder capability. There are multiple synthesizers that do that, but I went with the microKorg as there are a lot of online tutorials for help and its popularity.Figuring out the synthesizer's features is not simple, but the manual provides details on navigating the synthesizer's capabilities. The included microphone is nice and allows you to use the vocoder effects without having to purchase a microphone, but the neck of the microphone is not sturdy and flops around easily. Out of this World Improvements, Amazing Synthesizer!

I've had this synthesizer for a little less than a year now, but have owned the original Microkorg since 2010 or so. Man! This thing is pumped with all the improvements you wish you had in the original Minikorg! The Speaker ultimately made this synth a must have for me, and it's really solidified my opinion on how great it is! I no longer have to unpack my amp, or configure a chain of signal routing just to get a sound from my Microkorg. This thing allows me to turn it on, and jam out in the open air. No headphones, or amps required. The New sound bank is cool, but not really anything to ditch your old Korg for. What's impactful is the D-bank of empty patches, that you can sculpt and save for. Now I'm no longer deleting factory presets when I create a cool sound. The vocoder is nice, and upgraded with 8 new Vocoder patches. The one we all want (A Dry Input) has now been installed, as well as a few robot voices, and sound that aren't so cheap. The color is kinda bland, but a few sticks never hurt anybody. The LED colors have been modified as well, in a better way. If you've never owned a Microkorg and have always thought about buying one, I HIGHLY recommend you get this! It's a GREAT started toy into synthesis, and when you really get into the bare bones of sculpting waveforms in the menus, you'll find you can do so much with this synth.

The Reigning Champion of Entry-Level Synths

The MicroKorg is an excellent synth. Having remained in production for over 20 years, its status as a constant is determined by its sound and ease of use. I haven't messed with the factory presets but designing your own sounds is a breeze with the intuitive knob layout. The sound engine sounds very natural. I wouldn't say analog because resonance on the filter is markedly digital but there are countless analog-like tones to be had. The oscillators don't start at the same phase with each key press, which makes this much more analog sounding than digital. The polyphony leaves something to be desired because, when making layered patches, you only get two notes. The ring-mod on oscillator two is quite good and, so far in every application I've used, ring-mod-sync seems to be more pleasing than sync on its own. The effects give a nice stereo dimension to the sounds and, on a synth of this stature, four mod-matrix slots seems to be just enough. I can't recommend key-tracking LFO 2 enough for really cool analog-FM style tones. Getting a tracked LFO speed for each note does so much for creative sound design.

Works Perfectly
7 June 2017

I have a professional recording studio and produce songs for teen synth pop recording artist Christine Lee in the Hollywood California area. I have many professional Roland and Yamaha synths. I needed a synth to access plug-in synth sounds for Protools 11 such as Transfuser and Riser. I was a little afraid this would not work, but the keyboard is basically a plug and play keyboard. I plugged it into the USB port for a Dell computer with Windows 8.1. The computer recognized it. Then I created and instrument track in Protools and selected a plug in instrument. Works great. Now I have added to my arsenal of hardware synths with the power of plug in synths.
