I bought this Re-key lock kit because I had hired a dog sitter who turned out to be crazy and was fired before she did the job, but refused to give me back my house key. Even if she had, I wasn't confident she hadn't made a copy. Initially, I was going to replace my entire lock but then stumbled across this kit. After a quick google about what it means to re-key and what's entailed, I bought the kit and rekeyed each lock in under a minute each. Bonus, I now have 6 house keys instead of 1! I couldn't be happier with this purchase, it gave me so much peace of mind.

As an owner of rental property, buying smart locks and rekeying the locks with the kwikset rekeying kit has saved me hundreds of dollars when the locks have needed to be rekeyed when the tenant has moved out of my property. The rekeying process is simple and takes less than 10 minutes to complete. Absolutely would recommend purchasing this kit, plus you receive 6 total keys with the kit!

This is an excellent and easy to use product. It is rare when something works so easily as this did. As a small landlord I now change out keys in minutes instead of changing out the locks each time someone moves. An excellent product and a fair price. Again, a rare combination.

We’ve lost the back-up keys to our keypad lock. You need a working key to rekey a Kwikset lock. The instructions on this implied to me that the 2 alternate keys might serve that purpose, but they don’t. So, nothing really wrong with this product, it just didn’t do what I needed. I have been finding some YouTube videos that show how I might rekey the lock without a known working key and I may do enough disassembly of the lock to try that. If it works, then I’ll use these keys, and be happy to have them. I’ll also need the smartly tool that is included in this package to attempt to rekey the lock.

This is just an all around great concept to save a lot of time and money. I did not realize that most Kwikset locks have had this smart key re-key feature for years. However, there are also some brand new Kwikset locks that don't have the feature, so make sure your locks are smartkey compatible before you buy this. Don't know why they wouldn't make all their locks compatible, go figure! If smartkey compatible, they will have a tiny little slot where you stick the tool (that comes with this) into.

Years back I had replaced all the locks on rental units with Smartkey locks to save on cost and time of changing out entire locks between tenants. I thought $11 for just some new keys was too much, but then when you look at the amount they charge these days for key copies, it suddenly seemed like a better deal. Plus with this kit it provides you two temporary keys that you can use to change the locks from the old tenant, allow any workers or people you need to give access, then rekey it again to the four keys provided just before the new tenant moves in. Finally, I even put these style locks on my own home, which allows for a convenient way to temporarily change my locks for my guests who may visit from out of town, I provide them a key to get in and out without me, then when my guest leave I simply change the keys back to my original set and the ones used before no longer work. Again, great system! This product is a convenient option to the SmarkKey lock system!!

I just had to call a locksmith on a Sunday night to help me get back inside my house.The good: Rekeying instructions were easy to follow and I managed to rekey door and deadbolt quickly.I confirmed the new key worked by making sure it could fully rotate. The old key was no longer able to work. Great! I was done until a moment later.The bad: The pack comes with 4 "identical" keys. One I tested and put it on my main keychain. I grabbed another key copy and put it on a spare keychain for my lockbox. I went outside and closed the door and planned to replace the old key with the new spare copy. But after I closed the door and tried the key, it didn't work. I tried the old key, that also didn't work. I tried jiggling it and verifying ... MoreI am getting this to warn others. I was locked out without a phone and luckily neighbors were around and helped me contact s locksmith (this of course was a Sunday night). Two hours later the locksmith came he was able to get me in. I compared and showed him the key that I tested and it's copy. He noted a very slight difference in the first section of the key that I couldn't see even after he pointed out out. The other 3 copies worked well. It was just that 4th one that didn't. : /Make sure you confirm each and every key works before you give them out or lock the door behind you. Since these were all packaged by Kwikset I didn't think I would have problem with the copies. It was an expensive mistake and I wish I could be reimbursed.

Good keys, good value

As a landlord, I need to rekey my door locks from time to time. This kit is great. You get 4 duplicate keys and 2 alternates in case I need to temporarily rekey the door for the cleaners or a handyman. The cost of six keys is less than if I made duplicates elsewhere, so the price is right.

Although I did eventually find the original "master key" (the key needed to switch the lock key), I like the one that comes in this set more. I have it attached to the keychain with the two gold keys from this set (they will be used between tenants). To change the key you insert the old key, then slip the master key in the lock too. Exchange the old key for the new key with the master key set in the same spot through the process. Then remove the master key. The lock key is now changed! The whole process takes like two minutes (and saved me at least one new lock if not two with the different switch keys ... MoreI finally purchased a smart lock for the units I manage at my rental property. This set contains two sets of keys (four of the silver main ones, and then two of the bronze "alternates") along with a kwikset rekeying tool (which is just a small flat metal rod - if you have something else that is rigid and about the same size and shape, you don't specifically need it) and directions for rekeying. Now, I bought this knowing I wouldn't be able to rekey as easily as the directions said, since, thanks to some poor planning, I no longer had any keys that fit my lock. Using a few easy youtube tutorials, though, I was able to rekey without the original key in about half an hour (and that counts taking the whole lock assembly apart first!). All of the silver keys match each other well and work smoothly in the lock. I tried the rekey tool to rekey the lock to the bronze and back to the silver and it's very easy - as long as you *follow the directions completely*. Seriously, don't end up with a lock that matches no keys...while it is technically a fixable issue, it's a lot more irritating than just reading the thing in the first place.
