I've never used a niacinamide product before and have been very pleased with this serum! It has a mild, slightly sweet scent but isn't over the top with fragrance. I patch tested first, and while I sometimes have a slight stinging when I first apply, I have had no inflammation/ irritation/ breakouts caused by the product. I think the stinging occurs when my skin is extra dry, so that might be a consideration to think about. It's a fairly thick, slightly sticky texture that spreads easily to cover the face. The dropper, for whatever reason, only picks up a little bit of product at a time (the amount you see in the picture is the max that I've been able to get in one go). I'm not sure if this is a flaw or if this is supposed to be the recommended amount of product, but I have a big face so I usually need to use another dropper of product to cover everything. The product is pink in the dropper and looks clear while applying, but on my skin it seems to dry down slightly yellow in any areas where it might have built up (like product getting on my eyebrows). It also stays a little bit tacky/ sticky for a while, so for these reasons I prefer to apply at night, although I didn't notice any difference in irritation or anything from applying in the morning. It layers well over my exfoliating toner and didn't cause any irritation when used together, although I did give about 20-30 minutes in between for everything to set. It will pill a bit if I use an oil or moisturizer over and haven't given a lot of time for it to thoroughly dry down. I do notice my skin seems less red and a little smoother/ more plumped in the morning after use. I've been using it most nights for about 4 weeks and think it has made some difference in my post- inflammatory hyper pigmentation. I will continue using this product and would recommend it to someone looking to improve post acne hyper pigmentation and other dark spots.

I used it daily for the first 1-2 weeks, then gradually reduced to once every 3 days or so, because even though I don't have sensitive skin, I could feel a very slight tingling sensation, and I felt like everyday use might dry out my skin too much or make it sensitive, especially now that it's summer (remember to use SPF with this product!). I never feel any tingling sensations with other products, even tretinoin, so I think this serum is pretty powerful. The "secret ingredient" is Melasyl (2-mercaptonicotinoyl glycine), which prevents overproduction of melanin and reduces the appearance of pigmentary disorders. It is a patented ingredient, so you won't find it in products from other brands. The bottle comes with a convenient dropper (separate from the cap), and the serum itself is a light pink color, has a slightly thick consistency, feels nice and refreshing on the skin, and has a mild, “clean” smell that I didn’t mind. You don’t need a lot to cover your entire face, so the bottle will last 2-3 months unless you use it 2x daily as recommended. I used this serum along with the Mela B3 Cleanser and have noticed a subtle but noticeable difference in my skin tone and clarity. I don't have a lot of discoloration or dark spots to begin with, but I will continue to use the Mela B3 serum (and cleanser) and will most likely purchase it myself when I'm out. I highly recommend trying this serum if you have dark spots or post-acne marks, especially if other products haven’t worked in the past!

I was initially worried about this serum since it does contain fragrance (but I also patch test everything now, even fragrance free products) so I patch tested several times before applying on my face. Luckily, I did not experience any irritation from this product. I have some spots around my temples and under eyes that I was looking to fade. I’ve tried several products in the past but nothing has really made a difference. Sadly, that was also my experience with this serum. I will continue using this because it might also just take longer for my skin to show any improvements (I feel like I normally give products about a month). The before and after photos on the website say the serum was used for 8 weeks. I like that this serum is marketed to be safe for all skin types and says it will “respect the natural tone of all skin”. I also like that this serum incorporates a new ingredient- Melasyl. It’s trademarked by the brand and I love seeing a science focused approach to new formulations and ingredients. My skin can be very reactive to so-called natural products and plant based oils or ingredients. This serum felt like a high quality product and I’ll give it more time to see if I notice any improvements in my dark spots. I will update my rating and review if I see any significant chances to my skin. Overall, I’d recommend trying this product if you have sunspots, age spots, or hyperpigmentation from post-acne marks. This product did not cause any dryness or irritation on my dry and sensitive skin. It was very easy to incorporate into my current skincare routine. While I’d have liked to have seen results in 2 weeks, I will use it for 8 weeks as was done in the clinical trials.

Thank you to La Roche-Posay Influenster for this Mela B3 Serum in exchange for my honest review. I have been on the fence as to whether this has been working for me or not. For this reason I took good photos throughout my journey and I waited the maximum time possible before posting my review (just hours until the deadline) to allow the full benefit to be seen. In just over a month (from Dec 23, 2023 to Jan 29, 2024), I feel like the picture evidence is showing some slight tone improvement, though I didn’t think anything was happening until I really compared the photos. I believe I see an overall lightening benefit and breaking apart of my stubborn dark spots. I definitely didn’t see improvement in 2 weeks though like their consumer survey’s claimed, but this could’ve been women who are brand new to niacinamide which would make sense. I have been a staunch 20% niacinamide user for a few years now so am probably close to maxed out on what benefit I might see (short of medical-grade laser treatments). I have tried every lightening active ingredient on the market, so I am grateful to get even minimal results, and I will continue using through this 10% strength serum bottle because I do think I see some slight progress. I will probably purchase another bottle as well to see if I can keep the progress going further. It takes decades to earn spots, so I anticipate the need to consistently use more than one bottle for proper results. The texture is nice silky, and the smell not off-putting, though my freakishly keen nose does pick up a hint of a garlicky after-note for some reason. I haven’t seen anyone else mention this so it’s probably just my hyper-acute weird sense of smell. It doesn’t linger though so I don’t mind it. I have been using this religiously, morning and night, but I do have to be careful what order I put it on or I will notice a rolling/pilling effect (especially when also using the Mela B3 sunscreen which I think is the real culprit—also see my review on that product). I find it best to layer this serum first, then my heavier serums/boosters on top, then eye cream, and finally face cream sunscreen (I also press my skincare into the skin instead of rubbing it in which helps with pilling). If you are new to niacinamide and attempting to lighten dark spots for the first time, I think this would be an excellent serum to start with as it’s one of the more affordable choices with effective ingredients and years of clinical research to back it up.

I have never had or currently have problems with acne but I have sun spots due to having spent practically half my life ignoring the benefits of SPFs, age spots and also very dry skin/uneven skin tones/dull which are symptoms caused by menopause . I've been using this serum for 3 weeks following the recommendations for use, which are 3-4 drops morning and night on the face, neck, decollete and I'm also using it on my hands which have a lot of age spots and sun spots. My results: my facial skin in general is clearer and cleaner, with younger-looking skin and I can say that it is truly renewed. Very effectively this serum delivers hydration, soft and smooth skin . My neck has more beautiful skin and my decollete where also i have a lot of age and sun spots, I can say that there has been a good improvement. On my hands there was a slight lightening of the spots and even though I know that this hand serum would not be as specific, I will continue using it as I believe that with more time there may be some significant changes. I use Mela B3 Serum together with Mela B3 Cream (received free of charge from Influenster) which has the same components but in a smaller dosage and has SPF 30, a perfect duo and both are suitable for all skin types , even oiIy and sensitive skin . I also reinforce protection with other SPFs 50. Based on ingredients of Mela B3 Serum Mela B3 Cream and in my results, I believe that for menopausal skin it is an excellent product to help us improve our skin care. My review for Mela B3 is an excellent serum to use daily and worth have . Thanks!

I’ve been using this serum and its corresponding cleanser as part of my skincare routine to improve the look of years-old flat, dark acne scars. My routine, which also incorporates products with Vitamin C and tretinoin, has been very successful in eliminating most of these scars and lightening all of them. As I use this as part of a routine, I can’t say for certain the degree of improvement resulting from just this product or just this serum and its corresponding cleanser. I’m going to continue using these products, though, and repurchase once I finish the bottles. I love that the serum bottle arrives with a standard screw-on lid and includes a dropper within the packaging. I really enjoy droppers for hygiene purposes, but I like that i can put the “normal” cap back ... MoreI’ve been using this serum and its corresponding cleanser as part of my skincare routine to improve the look of years-old flat, dark acne scars. I’m going to continue using these products, though, and repurchase once I finish the bottles. I love that the serum bottle arrives with a standard screw-on lid and includes a dropper within the packaging. I really enjoy droppers for hygiene purposes, but I like that i can put the “normal” cap back on for travel purposes. I also like the small plastic ring inside the mouth of the bottle that keeps the dropper in one place when you put it in the bottle and remove it. I’m much less worried I’m going to break the dropper and I like that the product is exposed to less air because of this feature. My frustrations with the product, however, lie with the dropper. I find it doesn’t draw much product and I have to repeatedly draw product, squeeze onto my hand, and repeat until I have enough serum. I wish the dropper drew more product at once. Also, it’s a little difficult for me to squeeze the product out of the dropper at times. I’m not sure if this is because I wish the rubber part of the dropper was bigger, more flexible, etc., but it’s slipped out of my hand and onto the counter, which defeats the hygiene benefits of the dropper. I did clean it, but I still think about if I could be contaminating the product now. Even if the dropper did not change, I foresee myself repurchasing this serum.

Effective, non-irritating brightening formula

This is a super neat multi-active serum that is in my experience gentle enough for daily use.I used this serum twice a day, incorporated into my skincare routine after hyaluronic acid lotion and prior to any other actives and moisturising agents.I found the texture pleasant and spread well across the skin in spite of appearing a little thick. The dropper seemed a little fussy, sometimes picking up less product than needed to cover my full face even when the bottle was full - a small inconvenience but worth noting at the price point. The serum absorbs quickly and I didn’t experience any pilling with other skincare products or under makeup. I followed it with jojoba oil and moisturiser, with the addition of The Ordinary’s salicylic acid serum on alternate days.My skin has a tendency towards dryness and flaking, particularly around my chin and can be prone to sensitivity in these drier areas, something I’ve noticed when using other niacinamide based products in the past which have caused a mild stinging/burning sensation. I didn’t notice any increase in dryness or unpleasant sensations indicative of irritation, even as the weather cooled and my skin became a little thirstier! This being said, I didn’t notice an improvement to hydration from using the serum, but I attribute this to my skin type and the existence of multiple hydration focussed products in my existing routine. For my purposes, this serum’s contribution to my routine would be the targeting of hyperpigmentation rather than a step I rely on for hydration. For this purpose, I found the serum to be effective at fading recent hyperpigmentation spots, particularly on my forehead and chin, and felt that new breakouts faded faster where usually I would expect the hyperpigmentation to stick around.Would I buy this product again?Generally, I tend to opt for products with a single active ingredient so I can more easily vary my routine based on my skins needs and sensitivities at a given time. The inclusion of exfoliating ingredients (LHA, retinyl palmitate) alongside the specifically brightening ingredients (niacinamide and the patented active molecule Melasyl) combined with the higher price point does give me pause. I’ll definitely be finishing out the remaining product and am tempted to re-buy but am not 100% sure it fits into my routine and skincare approach. This being said, the patented ingredient is super intriguing to me and I’d love to do some more research into this - this ingredient’s inclusion combined with the ease with which the product was incorporated into my routine alongside other exfoliants without irritation does make it super tempting.Presuming the higher price point is accessible, I would 100% recommend this product for those with sensitive skin looking for a well-rounded brightening product, perhaps as the sole active in a simple routine, in alternation with other exfoliants or for someone who is beginning to establish a routine and not interested in undertaking a dozen different steps.

Good for hydration, unsure about pigmentation

I used this product consistently for 12 weeks and saw an improvement within about 10 days. I found that the serum slightly evened my skin tone and reduced redness in some areas. However, after those 10 days I did not see any continued improvement or reduction in dark spots. I did not alter my routine or increase sun exposure in this time.My skin definitely felt more hydrated after using this serum and I found the consistency/smell to be inoffensive. The serum is on the thicker side compared to others & can sometimes be difficult to pull up through the dropper. Often I would have to squeeze the dropper multiple times to draw enough product to use.I did notice a small increase in skin brightness and clarity after using this product consistently. The mark is not gone completely, but has definitely reduced in noticeability.I had previously used the brand’s pure niacinamide serum and found better results with the previous formula. I will continue to use in conjunction with my hydrating serums until the product empties but unsure at this stage if I will repurchase. I would recommend to family/friends that have very minimal pigmentation/scarring

Great for skin-health!

I was so excited to trial the new La Roche-Posay Mela B3 Niacinamide Serum as I’ve been struggling with hyperpigmentation + dark spots on my skin – the claims of this serum sounded like everything I needed! I must first preface my review by outlining that I have a tanned complexion, and the hyperpigmentation + dark spots on my face have been there for over a year now. After the 12-week trial period and using this serum morning and night, unfortunately it didn’t fade any of my hyperpigmentation and dark spots. I feel that my darker skin tone and how long I’ve had the hyperpigmentation + dark spots might not be the right combo for this serum to work its magic. In saying this however, I am still happy to give the Mela B3 Niacinamide Serum 4 stars as I am happy with the ... MoreI was so excited to trial the new La Roche-Posay Mela B3 Niacinamide Serum as I’ve been struggling with hyperpigmentation + dark spots on my skin – the claims of this serum sounded like everything I needed! In saying this however, I am still happy to give the Mela B3 Niacinamide Serum 4 stars as I am happy with the other results I received from using this - my skin definitely feels healthier! Throughout the trial period, I had a few hormonal breakouts and this serum helped in preventing post-pimple dark spots from appearing on my face – something that I’m usually left with for weeks after a breakout. The trial period was also right across the winter season and this serum really did strengthen my skin’s moisture barrier. I didn’t experience any dryness or itchiness on my face that I’m usually prone to during the cold season. I also really like the gel-serum texture as it feels light on the skin, spreads across the face and neck easily, and sinks in nicely without any sticky residue. Although I do feel slightly disappointed that the serum didn’t fade the specific hyperpigmentation + dark spots I was hoping for it to target 12 weeks ago, I am still happy with the overall skin-health results.

Great, but not amazing

I have tested many products claiming to target pigmentation and my general stance is that there are so many pathways for pigmentation and blemishes to occur that it is take a combination of number of products to really make a difference, niacinamide being part of that mix and a number of melanin inhibitors as well as exfoliation.I received this in time to test on a few PIE spots I had from a breakout. For the most part, I think this did the job initially - the main hero ingredient being Niacinamide which is a known brightener and PIE beneficial ingredient. My younger PIE spots lightened after first week of use, but consistent use after 2-4 weeks did not do much to older PIE blemishes so while I think this serum was helpful, it wasn't any more helpful than other ... MoreI have tested many products claiming to target pigmentation and my general stance is that there are so many pathways for pigmentation and blemishes to occur that it is take a combination of number of products to really make a difference, niacinamide being part of that mix and a number of melanin inhibitors as well as exfoliation.I received this in time to test on a few PIE spots I had from a breakout. My younger PIE spots lightened after first week of use, but consistent use after 2-4 weeks did not do much to older PIE blemishes so while I think this serum was helpful, it wasn't any more helpful than other niacinamide focussed formulations out there which was disappointing as I had high hopes! This isn't to say it didn't help my overall skin health though - it did a great job as my skin loves niacinamide and helped maintain a bright and bouncy glow, but it didn't do an amazing enough job to warrant a repurchase over my other loved niacinamide at this existing $80 price point.I had no issues with the smell or the texture - applicator was easy to use and having wipers on the bottle neck made a huge difference to the experience of the product. Texture of the serum was lovely and silky and absorbed quickly - did not feel heavy at all and was perfect for layering. While it may not have really warranted a repurchase for me, I'd still recommend it to friends and family who'd like to try an effective niacinamide product.
