350MB/sec if you upgrade it to SSD.

Works great. I replaced the spinning hd with an SSD and it gets a solid 350MB/sec transfer rate. The same model SSD does 520MB/sec on the internal SATA bus so it's not perfect but it's a hell of a lot faster than the usb2 ports on my 2011 iMacs. Plenty for video editing or making a quick time machine backup. As a usb3 drive it's just as fast on my newer macs.

I contact them daily to ask for progress and they wont even answer my emails. Since they now have this unit for over a month, and I have a delivery receipt from them to prove it, I guess the small minded people at Seagate stole the unit to get rid of the evidence that they sold me a rubbish product. The LaCie Rugged 2TB Thunderbolt USB-C Portable Drive works fine and is very quiet. It did not heat up even after backing up two Macs. I could divide the drive into two partitions to be able to backup two Mac computers. Partitions can be renamed and can be sized differently, although I chose 1 TB each. Caution: Integrated Thunderbolt cable is Thunderbolt 2, not Thunderbolt 3 as is my new MacBook Pro. Luckily, it comes with a USB-C adaptor which plugs into the portable backup drive and will allow my Thunderbolt 3 laptop to connect, but at USB-C speeds...not at Thunderbolt 3 speeds. It still transferred data fast.

Drive failed after 6 months
6 December 2018

This drive failed after less than 6 months of moderate use. I use the drive as the primary store for my photos and paid the premium price thinking that the drive would have high reliability in addition to being a rugged unit. Fortunately I do multiple backups to other external drives (much less expensive than this LaCie) so no data loss.My advice, only consider this drive if you need ruggedized drives... And check out other manufacturers. My biggest complaint is that Seagate replaced this drive with a "refurbished" unit. I have no idea what that means given todays drive technology. Back in the 80's we used to rebuild disk drives but they were massive 162 pound units where all the components were accessible and replaceable.I would have been much happier with ... MoreThis drive failed after less than 6 months of moderate use. In the future, I will stick with the less expensive external drives.

Good hard-drive, but comes with a mandatory backup
29 April 2019

It's a great hard drive, it is fast and has lots of storage, however it comes with a back up program that you must install before you can use it and when it is connect that program wants to backup data from your computer onto the hard drive, while it runs it won't allow you to eject the hard drive. If you want to use it just as a portable hard drive to transfer data from one computer to another, you must pause the app on the computer you install it on so that it doesn't remain always connected to the hard drive co that you can disconnect it when you are done. I use the hard drive so that I can transfer work files from work to home so that I can work from home, so the backup program was annoying, but I think I have fixed it by pausing it, so it works normally now.

Great solution for the problem of overcrowded SSD on my laptop
24 January 2017

My MacBook Pro has 500GB of storage, of which almost 400GB is presently occupied by music files. I have several hundred more CDs to rip into iTunes. I purchased this external drive to provide storage for my iTunes library. Transferring this library to the LaCie 2TB drive was fast and easy. While I intend to use it only for music files, it is clear to me that this drive will work equally well for virtually any mass storage purpose I can imagine.

Perfect for remote near-line work.
29 November 2017

I was using a run of the mill 4TB USB 3 drive for a nearline archive that I travel with. It was slow, but not a huge deal. But then the connector started to get a little loose, and the drive would mysteriously unmount at random times. I thought it was time to get a little more serious. This drive is great. Almost 3 times faster than the other drive, and built in TB is great. And if that cable ever shows wear, there is a USB-C port and included cables to switch over to. Also, the 5TB model is only $20 more than the 4TB one. Overall, I am very satisfied.

SCAM - Horrible Customer Service
12 March 2021

I recently purchased a brand new MacBook Pro 16 (2021) and needed an external HDD. Was recommended the Thunderbolt Lacie Rugged HDD and ordered it up ($290). The thunderbolt did not even come close to fitting my new MacBook so I chatted them up. The cable is hard wired in to the HDD, so it comes with you everywhere, and doesn't fit my laptop. I asked if I could exchange it and was told yes. Upon filling out the form to exchange it, I noted a large difference in my refund, compared to what I paid. Come to find out, MOMENT wasn't refunding me the $51 that was CLEARLY labelled "TAX" on my receipt. I chatted them up and was told it wasn't really tax, but a handling fee or import fee.... What a line of BS. It clearly states TAX on the receipt, and this company refused to ... MoreI recently purchased a brand new MacBook Pro 16 (2021) and needed an external HDD. I immediately filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.I do NOT recommend this company. Stick with AMAZON or DJI or any company that isn't full of SCAMS.

Solid performance.
30 September 2020

As the owner of a still going strong 2012 MacBookPro that I use for video editing, I needed a storage solution that could handle both Thunderbolt 2 and 3 connections and this little jewel has the capacity and connections. I've had a 500G Lacie that's been solid for years. The rugged orange cover is easy to grip, stays where you sit it down and tough. Just what video in the field calls for.

Used As A Thunderbolt SSD Enclosure
8 July 2020

Unit works fine as a bus powered SSD enclosure for external Thunderbolt SSD drive. I removed the disk drive from the LaCie and replaced it with a Samsung SATA SSD. The faster drive works well for me in using Final Cut Pro X on my MacBook Pro. The SATA 2 interface of the LaCie does not support the full speed of the Samsung SATA 3, but this setup is still much faster than disk and is extending the life of my older MacBook equipped with Thunderbolt. Its difficult to find any other encloses for this purpose.
