More Compatibility, Space, and Reliability The new d2 Thunderbolt 3 massively expands capacity up to 10TB for professional bandwidth-intensive creative applications. Featuring Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.1 speeds through the USB-C port, the new LaCie d2 performs perfectly on late model laptops such as the new MacBook Pro—as well as on USB 3.0 computers. It's also the first LaCie product to feature the Seagate Barracuda Pro HDD for industry-leading performance and reliability. Fierce Barracuda Pro Dependability The LaCie d2 Thunderbolt 3 features Seagate Barracuda Pro enterprise-class drives for incredible reliability and performance. With industry-best capacities up to 10TB, 7200 RPM performance, and support for 24/7 operations, the BarraCuda Pro is the fastest and highest capacity desktop drive available. The d2 story Forged from a single sheet of aluminium, the enclosure provides uncommon rigidity for long-term durability. The whisper-quiet fan and heat-dissipating aluminium enclosure pull heat away from the HDD, keeping it running fast and healthy. Up to 240MB/s means less time moving files from camera cards into Adobe Lightroom—and more time filling camera cards with new photos and footage. Dual Thunderbolt 3 ports means you can daisy chain dual 4K displays, a single 5K display, or up to six total LaCie d2 drives—all through a single cable connected to your computer. Power a compatible laptop (up to 15W) through a USB-C (Thunderbolt 3 or USB 3.1) port. That's one less cable cluttering up your desktop.

Your equipment will thank you.-- The drive comes formatted as exFAT.If you do not like that, you can reformat it yourself, using tools that come with Windows and other operating systems. If you do a quick format, it will take 5 seconds. If you do a traditional format, where the drive will be formatted sector-by-sector, it could take hours, or even a day or two, depending on the size of the drive, and the speed of your USB port.-- I have not tested the software that comes with the drive, because such software usually stinks, from all manufacturers. And they just want you to install their garbage on your computer. But since I gave up and never install their software any more, I cannot say with any certainty how good or bad the included software is. Use at your own risk.Cheers!

I have two of these side by side. The good thing is that LaCie tech support is pretty responsive and actually helped me recover one of the drives when it no longer wanted to mount on my iMac. I can normally get 230 MB/s transfer speeds, which is just about as advertised. My only complaint is that these drives are fairly noisy and the blue light is just ridiculous. I have two side by side, and the lights aren't even the same brightness. One is bright enough to illuminate the entire room, and the other is bright enough to grow plants with.Apart from the noise and light, these drives are durable. I have not have any major failures so far, and the enclosures are built like a tank.

I bought this drive because I was working on a project that involved many stacked focus images. My 8TB NAS was filling up quickly and it was too slow. I bought this drive because it was the right size and because it should be more dependable because it is an enterprize quality drive. I have been happy with it so far. Speed is noticeably faster than my NAS, I have never had any start up problems, and I still have ample room to complete my project. One reason for selecting this drive is that it was formatted for Windows, without the need to reformat. The casing is really solid. One minor quibble: I find the size and flashing of the indicator light/switch to be annoying. I would recommend this drive to others who need its size, speed and dependability.

Good Time Machine Backup Drive
6 October 2022

Not as fast as an SSD drive, but for Time Machine backups, the LaCie 8TB d2 Professional USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C External Hard Drive, works fine. After the initial backup, which does take several hours, it is quiet and attractively designed.Replaced a similar G-Tech 6TB drive which failed under warranty after 18 months. After waiting 4 weeks for WD to honor their warranty, I got tired of waiting and bought the LaCie.I have many years reliable service from another LaCie external drive. And the new LaCie includes 5 years data recovery service. So LaCie is the only brand of spinning hard drives I'll buy going forward.

Great but be sure to format for Mac!

The drive operates quickly and efficiently. I set mine up and immediately began copying over materials from a drive that was starting to fail. I got it all copied to my relief and then set up TiimeMachine to back up the information.Unfortunately, I'd left the drive in the Ex-FAT (Windows) format and this created a major problem. I ultimately had to completely erase and reformat the drive to work with Macintosh compatible documents so it can be backed up via TimeMachine. The experience was scary and frustrating but it gradually dawned on me that there were instructions to reformat the drive to operate in a Mac environment which I neglected to follow.Don't make this mistake! I've repositioned the drive on the desk behind my computer so the flashing light is shielded from direct view. I can look around to check it but not inundated with constant flashing which I find distracting.

Great performer
1 July 2021

I've owned several d2's in the past -- all quality purchases. My early view of my new 14TB d2 Pro's is they are large capacity; solid and fast performers; exceptionally quiet; warmer to the touch after extended read/write sessions -- but not of concern; and without any other setting or intervention they automatically sleep and wakeup soon after my Mac does. In my opinion, you get what you pay for and these are worth every penny. The only downside is the blue status light is B-R-I-G-H-T enough to light a dark room at night and can be distracting if they are blinking while you're trying to sleep even down the hall, or if you have them running perhaps in an office when people outside will think the Martians have invaded the place with the bright blue ... MoreI've owned several d2's in the past -- all quality purchases. It works
21 October 2022

First thing I noticed is no instructions. It comes with preloaded cloud software which I formatted out. To be fair I also bought a new board to support a USB 3.2 gen 2 connection. Now there are two things which are occurring... one it seems to go to sleep and has to wake up to access which is annoying.... second I have had a few write errors. Now I can not say it is because of the disk or the new card. I did notice it transfers data about three times faster than any other USB drive that I have. So I am happy with the drive but why no instructions or information about specs, connections, or hints of how best to use the drive would be an improvement.

Quiet and Efficient
19 October 2022

I have had this hard drive for approximately 2 weeks and am very pleased with it. For many years I have had a highly recommended external drive that intermittently caused small-large problems. But mostly it was SO noisy. The LaCie drive is so quiet I usually don't even know when it is doing its back ups! It was easy to set up and start using it. Hopefully the efficiency will be combined with a long-lasting drive that doesn't have intermittent problems. I definitely am not anticipating this will be a problem and am glad I made this purchase.

Sleek, fast, and extremely quiet.
22 January 2023

As other reviewers have noted, the drive is extremely quiet for a spinning hard drive. Of course, it's not silent like an SSD. But, a little ambient noise and the whirr of the drive completely disappears. It's also very fast, at least compared to the Seagate Expansion 5tb drive that I had been using before this one. I could transfer a ~150gb folder of photos with 40k items in about ten minutes. The blue light on the front of the drive isn't ideal, but it's bearable. Otherwise, the drive has an extremely sleek look that will complement a modern desk well.

Works well, but info for USB 3.0 connection

I did not fully understand the implications for the transfer rate when I used the Pearstone USB-C male to USB A male cord to connect to my USB 3.0 port on the desktop. The transfer rate was very slow. I sent a support request to LaCie and did receive a reply which I incorporated. The solution for me was to enable write caching. Since the drive is connected to an APC UPS along with my 16TB server, I don't feel anxious about loosing data should the there be a power outage.
