The pen itself is nice to hold and write with. The unique grip shape isn't hard to hold even with a lateral tripod grip. My only problem is with the nib size. Lamy nib sizes are pretty inconsistent, and my other Lamy, a Studio, has an EF tip as well. Yet, when I compared them side-by-side, there was a massive difference in thickness. This one had a much broader, wetter line. For me, it was too broad to be usable in my Hobonichi Techo. I swapped out the nibs between my pens and I can use this one for planning now, but Lamy nibs can be a real gamble.The utilitarian sort of look is nice and it's a good pen for EDC as a planner and journaler. I don't have to worry about scratches as much as other materials or colors.

I'm extremely new to fountain pens, so I don't have a lot of appropriate paper lying around. As a lefty, and one who wrote with roller balls until recently, I have developed a preference for extra fine pens that dry quickly. Thus, I picked up the extra fine version of this pen to focus on good performance on cheap paper and a writing experience similar to what I was used to.The line is clear and reliable for the most part. It has a nice feedback from the paper, though if you're looking to avoid the feel and sound of scratch on paper that might be a minus for you rather than a plus. This should have been an excellent product.However, this pen has one FATAL issue for me! The triangular grip is a ******, ignorant and ridiculous design. Holding the pen instantly causes pains, discomfort, fatigues and actually pains in my fingers and hands.This design assumes everyone's hands are exactly the same, holding pen exactly the same way. No Lamy, that is not true. Come on, German engineering meant to be the best in the world but this one is failure in my view. This is my first fountain pen and I really enjoy writing with the pen. I love the vibrant color of the blue ink too. I watched so many Goulet videos on the webiste. The videos helped me learn about fountain pens and about the size of the tips. After seeing the examples of the extra fine tips, I knew I wanted an extra fine tip. I also wanted a soft grip but I did not see a soft grip pen available in my price range. I found a soft grip for the pen elsewhere and I am looking forward to adding that to my pen.Inserting the ink required a big push. Listen for the click and thats the clue that the ink cartridge is installed.
My first two fountain pens were the pilot metro and kaweco sport both of which I still really like and occasionally use. The metro writes wonderfully smooth though if I were to nitpick it’s tad heavy and posting isn’t ideal the sport writes great too and is much lighter (posts better) only negative is it’s a bit of a operation to eye drop it. Not a deal breaker but you’ll probably get your fingers inky. So I went and added the Safari to my collection… I was apprehensive because of the triangular grip section but once I got it it was much ado about nothing. Naturally works with my normal writing position so really worked out terrific. The broad nib surprised me at how thin the line was, but that would be fine if it didn't arrive WAY out of alignment and barely wrote. After many frustrating hours of tinkering, as we do, it became tolerable. Still sucks, actually, for what I would expect for a Lamy nib. However... fountain pens, am I right So, I got a stub nib to switch to a thicker line and get a better writing experience... Lamy **** the bed again on me! They are of very high quality for the price and will last forever with a little maintenance and TLC. The colors are well-named and the pens write extremely well (maybe more so than some more expensive pens I own). One of the most important design elements of the pens is the ability to easily replace the nibs. In general, the nibs on a pen are the most vulnerable part and are easily damaged. I was super excited to try this since it would be my first actual fountain pen and it did not disappoint. I've been using this consistently at the office and it hasn't let me down. The previous pens that I have been using would always skip and dry out but this one would write so well as soon as it was uncapped. The lines are pretty smooth and a little scratchy. (I prefer the feeling of the extra fine nib.) The ink that came with the pen wrote well on post its and computer paper with minimal to no bleeding/feathering. (I ended up buying two more lamy inks bc of this.) I do have sweaty hands and the ink does transfer and smudge so it's not bulletproof. You can't go wrong with this pen for the price and anything cheaper just isn't worth it for me.

Now, for reference, I own a very high end Mont Blanc and mid-range Sheaffer Targa and a couple of Parker 75s, all of which are beautiful writers. But, as delightful as they all are, I do not recall any of them giving me such a warm and fuzzy feeling on the very first contact with paper. Writing with the Safari is like writing with butter! Some clips are difficult to get clipped on and some, especially Parker's "arrow" clips can be a hassle to get off because the "barbs" on the arrowheads get caught. The nice wide, rounded Safari clip slips right on and off while still maintaining a snug, secure grip.I like the first Safari so much I ordered one of the special addition (from a few years ago) violets plus a few nibs for my daughter who likes fountain pens also and wants to play around with calligraphy. Then I was jealous so I ordered a one of the Mangos from that special edition class so we can swap caps and bodies now and then to have LSU purple and gold pens!
