The new Laowa 105mm f/2 Smooth Trans Focus Lens incorporates an unique optical design with an apodization (APD) element next to the aperture. The APD element resembles the function of an ND filter which becomes thicker towards the perimeter, gradually reducing the amount of light transmission towards the periphery to produce a soft, natural and beautifully diffused out-of-focus rendition (or called bokeh). The new Laowa 105mm f/2 Smooth Trans Focus Lens offers two separate diaphragms. The stepless 14-bladed perfectly circular aperture, in conjunction with the apodization element gives this lens the ability to produce smooth and pleasing bokeh. It is also useful for videographers to control the amount of light passes through the lens. The 8-bladed aperture is to determine the effective aperture opening (f-number) and the depth-of-field formed. The lens houses with 11 elements in 8 groups with 1 piece of High Refractive elements, 3 pieces of Low Dispersion elements and 1pc of Apodisation element. This optical design is proven to deliver images with extreme sharpness and limit the chromatic abberations at its lowest. The enclosure of the lens is made of metal to strengthen its durability. Canon EF, Sony FE.

The images created by this lens are tack sharp. The bokeh is extremely pleasing when comparing to other portrait lenses I owned. The dual aperture ring is also a bonus for videographer as well. Definitely recommend this little gem to my friends.

This lens has become my favorite new lens. Bokeh produced from this lens leaves you speechless. Portraits turn out amazing and paired with the Sony a7III couldn’t get easier to get accurate focus.

Using this on my Sony a7rii. to say that this lens is sharp just doesn't cut it. you really can't describe the sharpness in words! Build quality is top notch and it is very easy to manually focus by using the focus peaking & magnification. amazing value!

Sharp subjects and fabulous bokeh. Lens is solid metal. Focusing with the Sony A6300 is easy using the camera's highlighting feature. I suspect focusing with a DSLR might be difficult unless you use the screen and magnification.
I am in love with this lens, I purchased it mainly for taking photos of custom hot rods, but it's also great for portraits, it has two aperture rings which allows you to manipulate your bokeh, it's also very sharp!, I haven't found any chromatic aberrations yet (awesome!) the only con for me is that it doesn't handle direct sunlight very well, and another con for some, is that it has no auto focus, which I don't mind, because when I started this hobby, there was no such thing as auto focus. This is a lens for those photographers that like to take their time to get everything right!. You get the performance of a very expensive prime lens at a very reasonable price!
King of bokeh, you can buy all the expensive lens out there but the Laowa 105mm f/2 STF by Venus Optics beats the competitions hands down. This lens is constructed with performance in mind. You set the focus, aperture and the STF manually in fact, this can double as a cine lens. It is heavy, constructed in metal, and very simple to use. The pictures come out bright and sharp with a very pleasing bokeh. I love the lens so much that I'm going to buy other lenses from the same company.
Mostly for portraits. It does have the bokah as other reviews on the web have described. I studied those reviews before buying so I can say I received exactly what I expected and am pleased. Suggest you do the same so you understand what does and its limitations. Keep in mind it's manual only. I think it's at its best when wide open. It's a heavy lens so if I don't need it's special effect, I use lighter optics. To me, it's worth every penny. I'm glad I grabbed it before any possible import tariffs are added.
Very sharp and amazing background smooth isolation, my points on this lens is lens cap is not smooth, and e-mount is having fixed adapter not showing in pictures.Else everything is perfect.
If you can live with a manual focus lens, this 105mm portrait lens is really incredible. It's heavy and feels like a high quality piece of kit. Images are sharp edge-to-edge and the added reach really allows for some cool perspectives. I use this lens a lot for casual daily shooting. It works well for people, architecture, and even landscapes. Love it and don't regret this purchase a bit.
The lens does take great pictures and is great value. What I hated and returned the lens for is its not really designed for e-mount. The pictures shown online are not e-mount versions. E-mount version is much longer. They basically did similar to the 100mm macro lens. They attached a sealed adapter making the lens look weird and long. Even the picture on the box is wrong.Hope they release truly designed for e-mount version.
