Described as "weird but genius," the Canon EF-mount Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe Lens from Venus Optics is a truly unique lens designed for close-up shooting. Distinguished by its long and slender lens barrel, this macro lens provides a 2:1 maximum magnification with a 1.5 minimum focusing distance and a close 0.8" minimum working distance. Even with such a close working distance the lens measures 1.3 long, placing you at a comfortable distance to photograph nearby subjects. Also, as a wide-angle lens, greater depth of field is afforded when compared to traditional telephoto macro lenses, allowing for greater detail in the background with less subject isolation. The optical design includes both extra-low dispersion and extra-refractive index elements, which help to suppress chromatic and spherical aberrations for a high degree of clarity, color accuracy, and sharpness. Manual focus control permits focusing from 1.5 to infinity, and the front of the lens has a built-in LED ring light to aid in focusing at close distances. The slim 0.2" diameter of the front of the lens barrel also offers greater opportunities for lighting subjects from the front. Additionally, the front portion of the lens is waterproof and permits working with subjects just beneath the surface of the water or in dusty or trying environments. This "cine-mod" version of the lens has been optimized for video use and features integrated gears on both the aperture and focus rings for doing iris and focus pulls using a follow focus.

Super rad! Love this lens. It can get some really close shots that I've never been able to get before. It needs a lot of extra light, so keep that in mind. I'd buy this again, a great lens to have in the arsenal.

I have a lot of gear and this was bought for a few special shots that I had in mind. Its a very useful tool to have in the kit especially if you do a lot of macro work. The one drawback I would say is that it starts at f-stop 14 so you will most likely be using this in sunlight or at least with lights otherwise I hope you have a very bright cloudy day. It is water proof from the first few inches of the front lens so that helps with taking pictures in water or just about anything your imagination can conjure up. Really use full to go through small openings and also gives you a kind of jib feeling when used with a tripod to pass around an object.. I would get this lens if you have a basic kit already and need to add to it. It really is a speciality lens and for that use. That said you could shoot it as a 24mm prime but its not very practical. The lighting at the end of the lens is very useful to illuminate the subject in small or tight quarters but the quality of the light is pretty basic. I would love to see some 3rd party come up with a diffusion for the small LED lights on the front to soften the look.. Really if your going to be shooting some Nat Geo looking stuff in a small hole with bugs or mice or what ever your going to light it. Other wise it will have the headlamp newsy look.I hope this review helps with your choices.

It is a realy nich lense! The image quality is great and it makes interesting images.
Great lens for perspective with the small details. Needs a ton of light
This is a specialty lens. There’s no lens out there like it. With the being said, it better to rent it. Unless, you don’t mind shelling out money, it a awesome lens to add to your collection.
I lIke this lens a lot.I haven't had it much or had much to do with it so far.Just some playing, but it works nice.My only complain, is the colour of the LED's, and the lack of true control. (can't decide to turn on the right, or the left, or the top, etc etc) it's all or nothing, and yellowish, but they are dimmable! But that's it. Everything else has been amazing.
A very unique lens with specific applications (Macro shooting). This lens has it all, from 24mm f/14 to illuminated lens tip that can be activated via connection to a usb power supply. As with a lot of macro lenses, this one is great for studio shoots and for photographing subjects that are still. The design provides me with a lot of interesting angles, views, and applications. I didn't post any pictures because there are some great ones online that were taken with this lens, demonstrating the versatility of the probe lens.
This world can shoot things that cannot be tasted with other lenses.
We loved the quality and versatility and much higher than expected, when we bought it in the store we had a discount ;)
