I started my Leatherman multitool journey with a C31. I liked it, but the blade tip was too pointy and the tool a bit thick. Still better than the Free T2 that I purchased which was way too small and thick. This is like the porridge that was just right. The blade is long enough to be efficient and thick enough to be strong without the fear of snapping it. Moving the utility blades to the other side and opposed to the cutting blade makes this a comfortable handle and easier to carry in one's pocket. The real bonus: MADE IN THE USA.

I received this Free K2 as a thank you from the Leatherman Beta Testing Team, and it is a very welcomed gift. I've had it for a few months now and feel that I've used it long enough to write a short review:I typically carry a Charge TTi or Wave on my hip as my work tool, but don't like having something on my hip while not at work. This fits perfectly in my right pocket and while it has a larger profile than most EDC knives, it is so light that I hardly notice it. It has just the right tools built in, and I haven't noticed not having the full toolkit of the Charge/Wave yet. The grip is perfect and fits great in my hand, unlike a smaller knife that I can't wrap my hand completely around.I would have never purchased this tool based on the pictures from the website, ... What a great pocket knife. The size and build are well done on this Leatherman, as all their products. The knife has some additional tools incorporated like screwdriver heads (flat & Philips) AND a great box cutter/package opener. The action of the tools are smooth. Now the only con and it's really small, is the knife blade could be made of better steel, but I'm being overly picky as I have some pretty nice knives at home. But, it's not to say the blade on the K2 is bad, it just falls within the price point for all you get here. This knife will still slice paper and whittle wood pretty easily, so most people I think will really like it's performance. I throw the K2 in my back pack on a hike, or mountain bike ride as it isn't terribly heavy. Recommended. As always, ... MoreWhat a great pocket knife. To begin with, I love my Leatherman Tools. I especially like the K2 Free I purchased just over two years ago. Unfortunately, I snagged the tool on the corner of a table in my workshop and the clip just snapped off! This has happened to others in the reviews for this tool. I have tried since March 24th, 2022(5 weeks) to get Leatherman to send me a new belt clip unsuccessfully. The clip is poorly designed in the curve of the clip into two very thin metal bends around a hole in the top of the clip. This created a very weak point in the clip if it ever gets snagged in real life everyday use. Hopefully the engineering design team will rectify the weak clip design in the future.
I recently purchased the Free K2X for myself and, overall, the knife and tools are excellent. The blade needed a bit of honing, but I am a little picky when it comes to edge maintenance, so that might just be me. My only real issue with the tool, and hence the 4 star rating, is the lock buttons. Perhaps it is just that I have largish hands, but I find moving the button to close the knife/tool to be mildly uncomfortable. On a day that I find myself using it a fair amount, the tab will leave sore marks on my thumb. A larger/flatter/ergonomic tab would bring this tool up to a solid 5 stars. Other than that, the fit and finish are top notch and I would recommend this product to anyone looking for an everyday pocket tool without an overabundance of "features" that you ... Love the stout lockup of the new locking mechanisms. A little stiff out of the box but that's normal, it broke in well. Pocket clip is robust. Love the contour of the blade! Very sharp. I use the package cutter all the time, love having that to save the edge on the blade for other stuff. The only adverse quality note I have is about the navy blue paint. On the end of the knife that sticks up from my pocket, some of the paint has worn off from my keys that hang on a Leatherman Carabiner. I've only had it a few months and expected it to last a bit longer.
The mechanics of the knife are smooth and what I would expect from Leatherman but the finish and design of the handle is not. There are multiple grooves or waves in the large chamfered sections of the handles from when it was machined and a ton of small gouges or nicks all along the harder corners. There are a couple burrs that were not removed before it was painted over as well. I wish the laser etching was slightly deeper so it had more of a presence when looked at and maybe gave a slight amount of grip too. I would prefer the flat head tool to be thinner so that the overall width of the handle would have a better feel in the hand. Even in my larger hands the clip ends up digging into the center of my palm because of the overall thickness when I tighten my grip ... The polished parts are what I'd expect from Leatherman but the painted handle looks and feels like something cheap you'd find at a flea market for less than 35 dollars.
First off let me say I really like this knife. To me it is a knife because that is the main tool (versus other multi-tools where the knife blade is secondary to the primary pliers). The blade shape, size and slicy hollow grind is great for everything from food prep to slicing up boxes. But because this is primarily a knife, the blade material is a but subpar for $90. 420hc is certainly fine for an occasional use blade but for something that is the primary use of this tool, it should be a better steel. It doesn't take long cutting up boxes to find that the blade has dulled and needs to be touched up. So Leatherman if you actually read this, offer a 154cm or S30V upgrade! The handle is quite comfortable without the pocket clip, but is not quite as good with the pocket ... MoreFirst off let me say I really like this knife. The handle is quite comfortable without the pocket clip, but is not quite as good with the pocket clip. It really feels like the pocket clip was an afterthought on this and could be better so that it doesn't protrude into your palm as much as it currently does. The quality is excellent throughout and I like the locking system, very secure and easy to use with either hand. Overall a good knife and tool that could be great with a couple key improvements.
The package containing the Free K2X arrived ahead of the due date which was a very nice surprise. I had purchased a Leatherman Micra for my wife. Both were shipped in the same package, thank you. To tell you the truth I believed that the Free K2X was a smaller. I read the specs on the K2X but for some reason the information did not register. Anyway I saw this “large” utility knife with thoughts “this is a pocket knife”? It looked “large” yet it fit my hand nicely. The quality was Leatherman. All the attachments functioned well (there is always a breakin period). It did not feel awkward in my pockets. It felt like it belonged there, nice. Placing the knife inside my pocket watch pocket via the clip made the “large” knife feel like the perfect size, again thank you.
The K2X has been my EDC for over a month now. I like how sharp the blade is and how it is easy to move into position. However, these great attributes come with a slight danger. While clipped onto my waist band and playing with my kids, the blade dropped and rested in a 40 degree position. Covered by my shirt, I was not aware that the blade was exposed. I only discovered that the blade was exposed after swiping my hand towards it. It drew blood off my index finger. That is how I can tell you that the tip is very sharp. Luckily, it was only my blood and not one of my kid's.
