Easily my favorite pocket knife!

I have been searching for a good pocket knife. The tools I need are a knife (obviously), Philips and flathead screwdrivers, a light-duty prybar (usually via the flathead), and box/package opener (secondary smaller knife ok – just something so I don’t have to use the main blade for this). I purchased a few SAKs, but I have been a little unsatisfied since many of their tools/blades are difficult to open. I am so glad I finally decided to pick up a T2. Yes, it’s a little more bulky that my SAKs, but the blade and tools open VERY nice and they even lock in place (unlike a SAK). With the pocket clip, this is easily my favorite pocket knife!

I recently bought this tool and can’t stop messing with it. I’m amazed at the quality and ease of use. The tools just pop up with the press of your thumb and the knife is razor sharp. I just ordered the K2X because I love this so much. The T2 for when I go around in gym shorts and the K2X for every other day, so I’m never without. I use it constantly. Get the optional belt clip that goes with it. I don’t understand why they make you order that separately, but at least it’s available for purchase. You will not be disappointed with this tool. I highly recommend this item!

I picked up a T-2 yesterday at Lowe's. It was in a box so I knew I was gambling, but I could tell by the weight I was going to like it. I've been carrying a pocket knife since I was a kid, but this knife gives me more. Ideally, I need two blades. One blade to keep in reserve so it's sharp, and the second blade for opening mail and packages. This tool comes with a package opener so I'll think everything will be fine. I've read other reviews- PLEASE don't add the clip. It's not necessary and it just adds something to get in the way. This knife is meant to go into your pocket. If I was going to add anything, I'd suggest color options. The plastic inside I think will be fine- it creates that lighter weight. If it's too big, or too heavy I won't carry it. Good Quality EDC Tool with a few Issues
21 March 2021

After a couple weeks of ownership, I have tested the Free T2's various features. It's well built, lightweight and compact. It fits perfectly in the tiny jeans pocket but it would be nice if it came with a clip to ease my worries about it falling out without me noticing. The tools are easily accessible with a simple thumb roll. The knife was very sharp out of the box.My issues with this tool are thus: My Free T2 had developed a click sound that comes from the little arm near where the tool implements lock into place at the top. I have found one other review that mentioned this clicking sound on Amazon. I was able to solve this issue by bending the little arm slightly towards the middle to keep it from moving out of the groove. I was able to solve this issue by bending the little arm slightly towards the middle to keep it from moving out of the groove. Another problem I have with this tool is that it's exceedingly difficult to get the knife blade out with one hand. At around 45 degrees of rotation, the knife moves the locking mechanism making it difficult to push it past this point with one hand. With both hands, this is a non-issue.

I wanted to use this for work but......NO!
3 August 2019

Let's start with the 2 ton elephant in the corner first. The T4 comes standard with a pocket clip. You have to spend 10 bucks to add an item to the T2 that costs only 20 bucks less so it's actually only 10 bucks less. While Benchmade gives out pocket clips for their knives like they are party favors. I bought this tool hoping to make it my primary work knife. I always use a pocket clip on my primary. Sad and disappointing.Next up on the docket, the knife blade. I have oiled, I have disassembled, cleaned and polished the pivot and ramp on the lock bar to no avail. The action is crunchy, gritty and stuff. I wish I could open it up like the other 3 tools but it's a 2 hand open blade which I can not settle for in a primary work knife. That's not to mention that the edge rolled on the first piece of PVC conduit I reamed with it. An action I can do with my 6 year old 154 cm mini griptilian all day long to no ill effect. The 3 other tools that actually open one handed are great I honestly wish I could buy the file from the T4 and replace my blade with it. Then I could just carry my T2 as a pocket tool to supplement my primary knife and not have the wasted blade slot that I despise.

I've been waiting for a OHO Swiss Army Knife ---- Excellent functionality needs less plastic

Dear Leatherman,For as long as I can remember I've had a Victorinox Pioneer in my front right pocket. It's the first thing I think of to go on my person everyday. Forever, I have been waiting for a company to make a similar design and aesthetic, but more modern with a one-hand-open operations. When I first saw the T-Series, specificially, T2 I was overwhelmed with excitement as I was sure this was my replacement to my Pioneer. Finally, when the T2 arrived I gave it a shot and carried for a week. The functionality of the FREE series is amazing, well done. However, I feel you guys got cheap on the materials. WHY SO MUCH PLASTIC. It's just not sexy and is ultimately a deal breaker. Speaking to a few friends, they feel the same. When you look at the back of an Alox Pioneer, it's alumininum and brass and feels and looks elegant. You guys are almost there, but this aspect is a let down in terms of the EDC community, who care about design as well as function. I'm a huge fan of Leatherman, huge! I hope you guys address this in the gen 2 version of the product. I would be very excited to buy.As well, for pocket carry, it is every so slightlly bulky, If you could shave down to .5 inches and keep the same tools that would be amazing.FYI, I wrote you guys in 2015 about making something of this design. Just showing I am passionate about Multi Tools.I hope you appreciate the feedback and thanks so much for being a great company.

Leatherman’s answer to the SAK is a winner!
4 September 2019

I have several Swiss Army Knives (SAK). They’re functional and lightweight. For quite some time, if you wanted a pocketable multi-tool without pliers, the SAK was the go-to option. Leatherman just changed that. The T2 (and T4) are tougher, well built options. The shank in the drivers and pry tool are confidence inspiring. What you get are legit tools that would be at home in a full sized multi-tool; these are NOT scaled down versions. The only exception might be the knife blade; it’s compact but it’s certainly functional, of decent quality steel (but 154CM would be awesome), and came very sharp.Handle a T2, then pick up a SAK Tinker. You get a similar tool set, but the Leatherman T2 is simply “next-level” in build quality. The “Free” opening and magnetic retention work as billed. After minimal break-in, it’s a breeze to open/fan-out the tools/close one-handed. The knife is a bit stiff, but not unreasonably so. Being an in-pocket tool, you’d probably appreciate that it takes a deliberate effort to expose the blade. The major criticism I’ve heard is that the T2 should ship with the pocket clip (as the T4 does). I get why folks say this and agree that LM should include a clip and let the user decide. I bought the clip and lanyard set. After packing the T2 around clipped to my pocket for a couple days, I took it off. The T2 is *thick*. Clipped to the pocket, it impedes your hand from reaching beyond it. In my experience, The T2 simply carries better at the bottom of your pocket than it does clipped to it. So, my recommendation: clip your primary blade to your pocket and let the T2 sit with your keys. So, the SAK is a fine pocket-tool. But the Leatherman Free T2 (and T4) are what you’d expect from an American-made version: brawnier, innovative, and ready for work.

Not quite the EDC I had hoped for... but still great
14 January 2022

I purchased this hoping that it would be my EDC replacement for my pocket knife. I loved the form factor and the fact that it also included a few additional tools other than just a knife. When the T4 came out, I was hoping that it would be my new EDC but the size was just too big. When I heard about the T2, I thought for sure this would be it.... but alas, I was wrong.I would love to see an upgraded version that's about a 1/2 inch shorter and a 1/4 inch narrower. Both could easily be accomplished without sacrificing too much in terms of rigidity or durability, especially if they were to substitute the cheap plastic spine with metal. The other issue as others have pointed out, is that it's not quite the one-handed operation that Leatherman makes it out to be. All of the nubs used to extend each tool are in the same position as the one next to it, so it makes it almost impossible to open one tool without opening the ones beside it. Not only that, but the tools don't open as easily as demonstrated on Leatherman's website. I don't know what the design of the internal mechanism is, but perhaps it could use additional lubrication, or maybe the company could consider adding a bearing system or system that uses less friction like a teflon washer between tools to make it easier to open. As for the nubs themselves, maybe they could alternate the positioning on each tool so that there is a clearly defined, unique position for each one that makes locating and opening each tool much simpler. Add to that a detachable, reversible pocket clip and that would be the icing on the cake. With all that said, I only took off one star because I think these are all changes that could make this the perfect tool for someone like me, but even as is, I think it still deserves 4 stars for being a well made, quality tool with a sharp knife right out of the box.

The US Army Knife
4 October 2022

I have had this tool for over a year now and use it on average about twice a week. It has opened many boxes and slain many a piece of fruit. I have a bit of background with Swiss army knives and found this to be an excellent replacement. From a conceptual standpoint the T2 is a good idea. Swiss army gets a lot of stuff right, but what is it missing? Locks. The locking mechanism is what sold me on this tool in the first place, and it has been the standout feature. The slip joints on a Swiss allow for a slimmer package with more tools, this is at the cost of securely locking in the tool that you are using. The number of times I had that knife close on my finger, or that a tool I was using snapped back into the knife like a turtle retreating into its shell... The slip joints on a Swiss allow for a slimmer package with more tools, this is at the cost of securely locking in the tool that you are using. The number of times I had that knife close on my finger, or that a tool I was using snapped back into the knife like a turtle retreating into its shell... For the T2 however, you can open the tools with a single hand (mostly) and joy of joys, the knife won't close on your fingers. The lock is sturdy for the knife and tools. At no point while using the T2 was I worried that the tools would close on me, it is very confidence inspiring. I have used this tool hard for prying tasks and torquing resistant screws, never had a failure. The blade itself is very good, the steel and grind are very high quality and sharpens to a razor very quickly. That said, the only real gripe that I have with the concept is the difficulty in opening the knife. As a member of the superior right handers, I find this knife fairly challenging to open with my thumb even after the knife has been broken in. For the lefties out there, it is actually easier to open using the middle finger of your left hand (you win this battle). It is a truly ambidextrous tool and that is really cool. The thumb-opening design for the other 3 tools is brilliant. The tools themselves are all the things that a modern person that has a slight compulsion for fixing things might require. It has only 4 main tools, but I haven't felt under-gunned carrying this thing. From painting, to minor repairs of doors, to processing food, all these things and many others the T2 excels at. Once you get used to it, you wont want to go back. The T2 is light, easy and convenient. For most things I don't need a mutli tool that weighs almost a pound and has a thousand tools, this disappears in your pocket and politely appears when called upon. It has everything I need and nothing that I don't need. Another aspect I like a LOT about this tool is that it is made in the US. That is a very big sell for me. This is a high quality US built product, and that on its own is a merit. Does it have as many tools as a Swiss, no. Does it come with a pocket clip, no. Does it have pliers, no. If your universe can withstand the weight of those three facts, then it is likely you will find this a solid tool.

Don't make the same mistake I did and impulse buy before putting hands on it. I'm a multi-tool and pocket knife hoarder and have been waiting for Leathermans new line for a while. I did watch a bunch of videos before hand of people trying out this product including the ones on Leathermans website. So I was pretty hyped to order this. The knife is supposed to be a 1 hand opener as well but I had a hard time doing just that. I also own the Leatherman P2 and that blade is easily a 1 hand opener. Maybe mine needed to be broken in or loosened up but out of the box the blade was a bear to open one handed. So I actually returned this piece. I also own a Leatherman Crater and feel this is a better knife than the T2. Even though on the Crater you have to open the screwdriver implements 2 handed the knife has a rear flipper to get that blade open fast. Not to mention the pocket clip is included with the Crater and Extra for the T2. In my opinion definitely try before you buy and you may want to wait for the K2 or K4 line that is coming out. Those look like better quality.
