A working man’s best choice

AKA a full timer. Meaning the only time it’s not on my side is if I’m in the shower or in the bed. But even then, it’s within reach. I’d also like to say that I have broken a couple, but only because I used it for jobs that it wasn’t intended for. Leatherman has replaced them for me. I returned it thinking it was a fluke and re-ordered only to find that while the second surge was tighter than the first, but still not where my original was, it had one locking release piece that was so loose that it just clanked around with any small movement, unlike the tool locking release on the other side or on any of the previous tools. Super annoying and absolutely unacceptable with what these things cost. If you’re looking for a quality tool, look elsewhere I guess. It seems Leatherman just craps these things out with out any consideration to quality control or their final fit and finish anymore.

Previously I've owned the Skeletool which was also good, but after it was lost I decided to upgrade. The pliers are strong and have hardened teeth, the wirecutters work well, and the saws and blades are sharp and effective. The wood saw blade can be replaced with any T-shank jigsaw blade, allowing for infinite types of sawblades. I found I use the scissors more than I thought I would. The scissors cut well and are only limited by their length (7/8" cutting area) as they need to be small enough to fit in the tool. There are also forums where people have been able to mod and fit other tools into the bitholder and T-shank holder, like chisels and drill bits. It is practically a toolbox in your pocket. ... MoreThe number of tools on the Surge is the reason I chose this model. It is practically a toolbox in your pocket. It seems that Leatherman has put some thought into the steels they use for the tool. All the parts are very strong for a tool that is this small. I feel that competitor's tools are made with cheaper steels and hence will not give the same performance. The only downside is the Surge is a bit hefty as an EDC item. However this is a small price to pay for the extensive usability. I have the molle compatible sheath which fits the tool and extra sawblades. It can be worn on a belt or attached to a backpack.Overall this is a tool that has been well designed and no corners were cut in the design or manufacture. Well worth what I paid for it and I expect to see many years of service.

This Surge is built like a tank. It's a beauty. The file is so pretty I almost wanted to kiss it. Everything locks into place with such a solid feel. The tolerances seem tight; the needle-nose meets perfectly and has a little bite right at the end; just perfect, and could be used for some pretty fine work. I got the black one and it came in great condition with a touch of oil where it should be. I like pretty much everything about it to be honest. I'll enjoy using it. I also got the bit set; 40 bits, very nice. I also like the ratchet very much; it fits well and can be used alone, also. There are a couple of little details if you are buying one: The clip will cover the LEFT side part that is blank and doesn't have the Leatherman Surge label. So if you have a decoration there, it will be covered by the clip when you use it. No biggie, just be aware if you have it customized. Second: I bought the "Surge Set" that comes with the bit set, ratchet, and clip. This set DOES NOT come with the sheath shown on the "Surge Set" picture on the web site, which is also listed as "Nylon Sheath with Pockets", and also on the picture of the Surge you buy by itself. THAT sheath has a holder for your bit extension or ratchet you can see in the picture, and a snap. The one you actually get has no holder for the ratchet, has velcro instead of a snap, and is big enough for the Surge, but nothing else. There is not room for any of the bit set or ratchet or anything else. The tool is so great I'm not too discouraged about it; however, I will buy a sheath somewhere else since I can't seem to trust how they display them on the Leatherman site.

I have a Skeletool CX, but I wanted something with more versatility, functions, and more heavy duty to EDC. I'm an electrician by trade and I find myself reaching for my Surge instead of into my tool bag more often than I thought I would. Especially when I'm on a ladder. Does it replace function specific tools like a wire stripper or lineman's pliers? No, but it could in a pinch and that's half the point of owning one in my opinion.I also find myself using it at home for small projects instead of bringing 3 or 4 tools in from the garage. I just keep the Surge handy on the weekends. I use the TORX bits to tighten up screws on my rifles at the range and hex bits to adjust and tighten screws on my mountain bike. You better believe that I'm taking it on every camping our hiking trip too.I bought the Surge over the other offerings from Leatherman and other companies (Gerber, SOG,Victorinox) because of the bit holder and t-shank adapter. I already have a few other blades that I keep in the pouch for different sawing needs. I also bought the ratcheting extension, it's totally worth it! The sheath has room enough to fit the Surge, the 2 bit holders, the t shank blade pouch and the ratcheting extension fits in one of the elastic sleeves on the side. I keep a Streamlight microstream usb on the other side, and even a Fisher space pen clipped on. The bit kit came free as a promotion which was a great value, and you definitely need it if you buy a tool with the bit holder. I also got it engraved because, why not?In conclusion, this tool offers a tremendous amount of versatility in a small package that I never leave home without.

From a Rebar for 12 years to a Surge for life
10 September 2022

After 12 years I decided to upgrade from a rebar I carried since high school to a new leatherman that’s better suited to what life throws at me nowadays. The Leatherman surge is a very nice upgrade over the rebar. The weight and the size of it inspire confidence that I can tackle many of the everyday tasks at home or at work. The addition of outside access scissors is very nice to have. The bit exchanger as well as the swappable saw/files really adds to life long use. The surge has a very nice, well put together design and you can see the strength and quality of the tools in both the smooth unfolding of the pliers and the strength of the joints that hold all the tools together. These scissors are easily better than anything else leatherman makes except maybe the micra. The blades are sharp and beefy. The serrated blades has a nice straight point for draw cutting. The inside tools are very very nice. I highly recommend picking up a bit kit and extension or else you’re missing out. The standard sheath this comes with has space for a a single bit kit card and extension.

All the quality and ruggedness you’ve come to know from Leatherman. Brought to you from your favorite moose themed retailer. The surge is definitely one of the largest in the Leatherman line up. But it’s for good reason. The surge feels like a near indestructible pair of pliers that can handle any task. As well as easy open blades/tools from the closed position. Open it up and you have access to the remaining equipment for all your multi tool needs. Overall this gets my two thumbs up. But Phil who had an accident in the dock can only give it one and a half thumbs.

Pretty versatile albeit a bit bulky multi-tool. Adding all accessories and the multi-tool extends the pouch out about an inch and a half when worn on a belt which may be ok , for hiking but not so much for everyday wear (I toss mine in a bagfor every day carry).Overall I would say that the Surge trades portability for versatility , but it still will probably be the last multi-tool you will ever need for a wide range of applications.
