Gifted for our Gbabys 4th birthday and it was a top gift!! His 4 older brothers helped put it together with him. In 5 min it was up and running. The 5 key pieces that can be placed in the tracks to have the train be more interactive were a huge hit with everyone. The sounds are not loud, the train runs smoothly and quite fast for what it is. As a multi generational lego buyer, this is a must buy!! After seeing my grands play with it I wanted one for myself! Scoop this one up while you can, especially under $50! It does require batteries, we gifted recharging batteries and they worked great.

Fortunately, although the track color was changed in the last 15 years, the tracks themselves are 100% compatible! He's already figured out how to make the new train go (turning it on with the button on the bottom and pushing it) and loves putting action bricks on the track. Although the app (which is optional and controls the train via Bluetooth) loses connection frequently, I haven't experienced any major issues with it.Our only real issue with the train is the battery life. His birthday was less than a month ago and we're already on our third set of 4 AA batteries! By comparison, he was given his cousin's old Duplo train from 2005 in November and that train is also on its third set of batteries in the span of more than SIX months! ...although that old train is limited to only moving forward and has no action brick response. The train will power down, but only after TWO HOURS of inactivity. That's far too long. 15 minutes would have been fine. I don't know why someone thought even 90 minutes wasn't long enough, but 2 hours was the right time to power down.Overall, it's a good train and a lot of fun for my 2 year-old. Just be prepared to use up A LOT of batteries!

Purchased this for my 2.5 year-old son, and we love to play with it. I was looking for something that is versatile enough for me too, because we play a lot together, and this set, along with the bridge and the additional tracks, ticked all boxes on my list. I knew that if I get excited about a toy, my son will too, and the fun multiplies. The push and go motor is a brilliant thing, it works really well, although we don't use the mobile app. There's no need for that, you can play without it perfectly fine, and mobile devices are off limit for my son anyway. Not a cheap toy, but considering the many hours of play we'll put into it, it's a good investment. After a few days of play, one morning my son started building tracks on his own. This is a top toy that has been so well thought out and designed. You will also need 3 batteries and to fit them, and thats it. Moving. The train moves in the direction the child pushes it and stops if its held still (or cant move). It can run on smooth floors as well as the tracks. The tracks are easy for small hands to put together. The set comes with bricks to build: A simple station (bonus points from me for the baguette and suitcase). A tree (bonus points from me for the squirrel). A coal tipper and shovel. An engine driver type character. A girl character. An engine A carriage Track to make an oval including 1 straight with a building base to put the station on. Action Bricks (see below) All three roof sections (1 on engine, 2 on carriage) tilt so that characters or stuff can be put inside. Theres play value enough in the above to warrant the price (under 50 delivered), but, you also get Action Bricks. The Action Bricks are tough lozenge shaped things and sit neatly anywhere on the track. As the train runs over an Action Brick, things happen as below: Yellow Action Brick sounds horn White action brick switches on engine light and gives a horn chirp Blue action brick engine stops temporarily and steam hising and water glugging type noises are made.Red action brick stops the train Green action brick stops the train and then reverses its direction. The twins (2 year olds) are enchanted. Really motivated to join the train and carriage together and control it around the track. Learning cause and effect through the Action Bricks, role playing, building around the set. Its been a big hit. The only downside has been - a few scraps over it but more than compensated by the hours of engaging play and learning. Oh and its soooo cute.

Great brother sister toy!
27 January 2023

The Duplo steam train delighted my grandchildren, ages 8 and 1. Big sis asked for something she and baby brother could play together. Brother is not quite ready to use it on the tracks but he enjoys crawling after it across the floor. Mom particularly likes the action strips that go on the track so the train whistles, lights up stops and goes and so on. I liked the substantial size of it. I encourage you to look up videos if you are on the fence as I was.

Great set , but buy extra tracks
17 October 2020

My boys aged 3 and 6 both really enjoy this set. I got the additional tracks and bridge. It’s easy enough for my 3 year old to help build tracks and operate the train; and my oldest likes making more complex designs. When their friends are here there’s enough for 4 kids. Both girls and boys enjoy this set. This also goes with other Duplo bricks and some vehicles fit on the tracks too, it can even be raised up off the floor. If the kids have imagination there’s lots to do with it. I haven’t had issues with it, and it goes up and down the bridge easily until batteries run low.*I would have liked a second option to get another/different train, the cargo train has been out of stock for awhile. And also an option to buy spare and different coding/function tabs would ... MoreMy boys aged 3 and 6 both really enjoy this set. Not as good as previous trains
30 December 2018

My 2-year old loves the previous issue motorised Duplo trains since he can push them along by himself, or use the big green button to start them going and stop them as he pleases. On this new train, however, you can't push it along by itself - it will always start running, which limits his play options. (It also requires quite a shove which will also sometimes move and therefore break apart the train tracks it is resting on). Also, weirdly, it doesn't auto-power down when left idle - it just sits there, not moving, but draining its battery unless an adult thinks to turn it over and notice the blue light. Maybe it powers off eventually, but it hadn't after a few hours of not being used. The bluetooth app is not an essential part of the toy, but is poorly designed ... MoreMy 2-year old loves the previous issue motorised Duplo trains since he can push them along by himself, or use the big green button to start them going and stop them as he pleases. My Son loves to play with the decade-old Train we already had and so I decided to gift him this new train for his 3rd birthday. The color plates to trigger actions is quite good and he likes it a lot.But there's only one for switching the light, which is really bad because it turns the light on and in the next lap it turns it off right before a tunnel. He doesn't use the App because I will never give a 2-5 year old toddler my €1300,- iPhone to play with. Toddler loves it, batteries are a problem
11 January 2021

My two-year old immediately figured out how to make it run and loves playing with it. The squirrel that comes with the set is also a favorite. Our problem is that the four AAA batteries last for 1.5 to 2 weeks. (And note: it doesn't come with batteries.) The train takes a lot of energy. After reading other reviews, I went with non-rechargeable AAAs since they're 1.5 V, rather than rechargeable AAAs which only yield 1.2 V each. (And it's able to get up the bridge -- sold separately -- fine with the 1.5 V batteries.) The train doesn't seem like it turns itself off after it's been left on (running or not running) for a while. Which happens often. Don't get me wrong -- it's so much fun ... when the batteries have enough energy to make it go. I just wish it stretched the batteries longer or performed better with rechargeable batteries (which I haven't personally tested but assumed based on other reviews).

Very detail review for this train set
27 September 2020

1, This train uses 4 AAA batteries.2, This train's underneath contains a camera-light liked colour recognised sensor to recognise the action blocks. Actually you can replace the action blocks with the same coloured material like paper, the train can still read it and implemented the relevant actions.3, The tracks are compatible with other Duplo's manual push trains, as long as you don't fit with a switch-track from other Duplo track set like 10882.
