This is a beautiful set with many pleasing elements. The addition of the scenery elements (and modular to boot!) is much welcomed innovation compared to previous LEGO chess sets and greatly enhances play value, especially for younger kids who may be just learning about chess for the first time. The storage compartments are another outstanding addition, although unfortunately seem just one brick too shallow to fit the pieces in without partial disassembly - a very unfortunate oversight, as it makes set-up and storage much more time consuming.A few major cons include the rather unorthodox and unrecognizable forms chosen for the bishops, knights, and pirates' rooks, which make them easy to confuse with each other and very hard to distinguish at a glance. This significantly undermines the value of the set for teaching kids chess. The other major con, in my view, is the completely baffling decision to provide the bluecoat pawns with *neither* the epaulettes *nor* the shako hats that bluecoat soldiers normally come with. This greatly decreases the utility of the set as an "army builder", because to make these pieces look like actual soldiers, these missing parts would have to be ordered separately from a second-market reseller. A very, very unfortunate decision there.PROS:- Beautiful set!- Modular scenery!- Storage compartments!- Good value!CONS:- Storage compartments are too small for the pieces- Some pieces are unrecognizable- Soldier pawns lack hats and epaulettesOverall, a good set and a great value for the money, albeit with some glaring (and surprising) flaws.

I was excited to hear that Lego had produced a new chess set for a popular theme and decided to purchase it in hopes of teaching my sons the game of chess. This set does seem to have a very good value due to the 20 minifigures in addition to a fair number of pieces. In fact, the chess set has even more parts than the Brick Bounty ship from this wave! There are plenty of figures, weapons, bricks, and it is especially nice that there are 8 of the 16x16 plates in it. It seems like money well spent. As for using the set for its intended purpose of playing chess, there are pros and cons. The pawns are excellent on both sides. I do wish the bluecoats had hats, but they are fairly uniform in appearance. I would probably rather have used the governer or admiral pieces from this series as the king. The hat on the king seems better suited for the 8 pawns. For the most part, the minifigure choices are good. As for the brick built pieces, it seems like there are some hits and misses here. The towers on the bluecoat side make excellent rooks. On the pirates side, I would have used a crows nest set up to counter that and maybe moved the parrots to either the knight or bishop position. The biggest weakness to me is the pirate knight. It appears to either be a skull or tiki head, not sure which one. The bishop pieces are maps and weapons between the two sides. Between the bishops and knights, I think they could have been a little more creative with the designs. It might also be a bit confusing remembering which is which when actually playing the game. I will probably modify the set a little bit, but in the overall sense, it is definitely worth having for a variety of reasons. You can play chess, or you can have a well staffed pirate ship and/or soldier fort. Get this one while you can.

Lego products have always been about encouraging creativity, not just entertainment. Chess is a game that goes very well with these values, and this set is up to the standard. It is a very fun introduction for any child into the actual game, for it will relate to the familiarity of Lego minifigs. Personally, I collect chess sets and this has become my favourite having just spent over am month owning it.BUILD: 4/5The board is very sturdy, with just enough space for figures to move comfortably. However, the addition of the beach on either side is a great decision to add to the Legoness of the game, as it can serve to display the set in a compact way if there is no space in the house to display the full set. It travels well with the integrated storage compartments as well. Makes me want to create my own chess sets following these instructions for other themes (ahem, Star Wars).MINIFIGS: 4/5If you're looking for a way to build up a Pirate crew and a small Bluecoat arsenal, look no further. The repetitiveness of the pawns is why I´m knocking off a star on this one, but they are of good construction and design nonetheless. I would have hoped personally for a better choice in some of the other figures, such as incorporating an actual knight or equivalent instead of a map, or the parrots on the Pirate's side look more like knights while the stone skulls appear more like towers.OVERALL: 4/5This is a fantastic set that makes me wish they had chess sets for every theme they make. I'm sad to see that this product has been on sale for so long, probably due to the low sales it has had (I hope to be mistaken on this assumption). I encourage more parents support sets like these that not only promote imagination and creativity, but critical and strategic thinking as well.SUMMARY: MUST-HAVE

I got this for my 6 year old son who is learning chess, and it makes the game a lot more fun for him. This set is a great value, with 20 mini figures and an interesting board build.I agree with other reviewers that some of the geometric pieces, like the bishops on the pirate side, are a bit odd. We replace those with different mini figures from other sets when we play. Also some of the figures need to be taken apart so they will fit inside the collapsed board for storage, but that's not too hard to do.My son also has the LEGO Brick Bounty pirate ship set, and he uses the mini figures from this set to stage huge pirate vs. soldier battles on the ship. Great fun.
I picked this up at the discounted price and have to say it was an excellent deal. The set includes 20 mini figures and a host of other interesting parts, like building plates. Overall, I'm pleased with it as a collection of LEGO pieces. As a game, it leaves a bit to be desired. pieces are to be held in place by attaching the bottom of the piece to the little nub in the middle of the square. This tends to work unreliably, so pieces tend to want to fall over or take a fair amount of work to get into place. This becomes particularly problematical because the pieces are often as wide as the squares, so there is no room to maneuver them and you end up knocking over adjoining pieces when moving your piece. It's just not very functional. Also, the base is advertised as ... MoreI picked this up at the discounted price and have to say it was an excellent deal. This becomes particularly problematical because the pieces are often as wide as the squares, so there is no room to maneuver them and you end up knocking over adjoining pieces when moving your piece. It's just not very functional. Also, the base is advertised as being the place you store the pieces. That's a great idea! You just lift off the sections of the board and put the pieces inside. However, when you go to replace the board, so as to securely store the pieces, you find out that the storage space isn't deep enough to hold all of the pieces, quite a few of which are deeper than the storage compartment is high. If they would add another course of bricks to the side walls of the compartments, then the pieces would all fit. I don't understand how they managed to overlook this simple shortcoming. So, buy it for the minifigs and the building plates, but don't expect to be able to play chess very well with it, or to be able to store it intact using the provided case.
Its a nice set and I like that there are extra areas on the sides that add to the theme. I will definitely add more to these like a complete fort and ship. While the pawns, Kings, and queens are great pieces. The knights, rooks and bishops dont seem right. But the nice thing about lego is it is easy to modify and personalize. Over all it is a decent set.
Classic combination of toy meets game. As per usual Lego quality standard, excellent build and very clever use of pieces. Great assortment of pirates in this set (obviously)! The amount of minifigs alone make this kit desireable. If you can catch this at a low buy-it-now price, don't hesitate....just buy. As a bonus, over time, this set will also rise in value as it is a retired set.
I had seen a review of this set on you tube which intrigued me and got me to thinking about buying this otherwise I probably never would have. I am not a chess player and don't intend to become one! However its fun staging them on the board. That all said I love mini figures and there is a large collection of them here. Yes there is some reception but if you are looking to get many figures this is a way to build up your collection for whatever purpose. The other point that the You Tube reviewer pointed out is that there are some relatively useful pieces in the set so if you have no plans of actually using the set it makes for some good parts. Its super easy to build so no challenge here for those that are looking for that.
My 9 year old son begged for this for Christmas. He was so excited to get it and put it together. He has played with it every day. He loves Chess, but he also just loves playing with all the mini figures. The only thing he said he wishes was different is that the little storage compartments were a little deeper so he did Have to break apart some of the bigger pieces. All in all a great set even if you don't like chess. Lots of great pieces and characters.
