These things are baffling. I bought a few without looking very closely at them, but they are really only meant to be used with the three new City sets IMO. First the good: everything is printed on the bricks and there are a lot of unique and interesting pieces here. I actually have no problem with the value for money and I will use some of this stuff. Just not the actual road plates. The problem I have with them is that I have a big modular city, and most of the parking is on the edge of the street. I had assumed that these consisted of several 8x16 plates so you could make multiple lanes but they are actually these big 16x16 plates that you can’t split in half. Perhaps I’m the fool for not looking more closely at the box, but since when does Lego sell you something this rigidly defined? There is almost no room to customize these or use these for any purpose except those three recent City sets. I am an adult so I will probably try to just buy some long plates to make parking lanes but don’t buy these for kids and don’t buy these for modular cities. The plates and bricks that LEGO has been making your entire life are cheaper, more fun and more adaptable than these.

Bad for kids, new system good 4 adults, Poor value

Playing Lego with my nephew (7) and niece (10), I know they don't have the patience to build roads to play with. Furthermore, unlike the old plates, they can't be quickly stored in the bin and taken back out.For adults, the modularity is awesome. Very customizable with just enough attachment points to be able to have wider roads/more lanes, or even a concrete or green margin. The value is very poor though. By far, my biggest complaint has to do with what is and isn't included.1. You get a TON of ramps. For everything except what's shown on the box, you will quickly be swimming in ramps. I have just two sets and have extra. I can't even imagine how many extra people will have with full cities.2. NO BIKE LANES. For some reason these are included in ONLY the most expensive road plate set.3. So many green plates. I realize the lego included all the green plates so you can assemble what's on the box, but this contributes to getting so few roads.4. Just one half plate. It takes 4 sets just to make one 4 way street crossing. Quite a lot of money compared to the old road plates!4b. In a perfect world, the half plate would have been studded all the way down the center so you could convert it to another road or used zebra crossing.5. The main thing to realize is that if you want to completely encircle one standard baseplate, you need 12 new road plates (3 sets), and you'll be "missing" zebra crossings.I actually personally really like the new road plate system in of itself, but Lego needs to sell a better "base kit" than this. They also need to consider what's needed for their younger audience, and that is not this.

Fun, Flexible and Fantastic

I thought I would buy a couple of these to see what the fuss was about and WOW! This new road system is so much fun and true to what Lego is all about – imagination and creativity.Playability – My 5-year-old daughter loves them and had so much fun driving around the roads. The traffic lights, zebra crossing and road signs included add so much to the play factor as well as being educational.Compatibility – We immediately added the petrol station and a Speed Champions Mini garage (and since a hospital and airport terminal) and they looked fantastic and were easy to integrate. Though the baseplates are narrow we have used the spare tiles wisely to add an extra stud to either lane and the road copes with 6 stud vehicles easily.Creativity – The big jump forward ... MoreI thought I would buy a couple of these to see what the fuss was about and WOW! Dual lanes? Center barrier? Floral displays on the barrier? Drains? Manhole covers? Car parks? Paths/sidewalks? Up to you!Value – If it was just the baseplates then it would be poor value for money, but the accessories make sure that you can make a ‘real’ feeling road out of the box and they add so much that you feel you get your money’s worth.Difficulty – They are easy to assemble and are very stable, but it takes an enjoyable amount of effort and planning to get the best out of them in terms of a working layout. The new flexibility is fantastic but it makes you think!Overall, a wonderful revolution in road building. Highly recommended.

Good idea, terrible product.

The problem is this is a bad product.Lego says they wanted to create a flexible brick built road system. That’s great. But they didn’t do that. This is a perfect example of a potentially good idea with terrible execution.Lego has released the least flexible road system in over 30 years. It’s not really even a system if we are being honest. There is no way to create turns. There are no sidewalks. The lanes are two narrow for nearly all lego cars. There are obvious improvements that lego could have made that are missing such as bike lanes, manhole covers and street gutters. There is very little actual road included here so you obviously would need to purchase several of these sets. But...Lego doesn’t include pieces to actually connect several of these together. Because there is very little road and you need to purchase several of these, you would end up with an enormous amount of useless pieces such as the downward slopes. It also feels like the accessories (road signs, streetlights, trees) should be a separately set that you purchase as needed. The accessories don’t make sense in a set that clearly needs to be purchased in bulk. For many of these reasons mentioned above this is one of the worst “value” products Lego has ever released. You can only make straight road and there is very little of that included in this set. You end up spending money for a significant number of pieces you won’t use. It ends up being a product that is impractical for almost everyone. This feels like something that was created as an addition to the 2021 city 4+/Junior sets and not as a legitimate attempt to create a better road system. Lego has far to many talented designers and they understand their customers well enough that it is unreasonable to assume anyone at the Lego group thought this was a good product.

Good system, could be improved
25 January 2021

Just tried out the new system, not being sure about what I would think about it. Is it a good replacement for the old baseplates? In general, I think it is very nice that the system enables and invites to be more creative about the layout. Also, the accessories such as the lamp posts with glow-in-the-dark pieces are a nice touch. The roads are shiny, whereas the old road baseplates were matte. This is a matter of preference. I wonder how the roads would look after a lot of play. Looking weathered they might even look better. Time will tell. The pros:- As far as constructing the roads, it is easy to quickly build a layout- The roads are easy to make wider, for e.g. Speed Champions cars, or to make highways. Time will tell. The pros:- As far as constructing the roads, it is easy to quickly build a layout- The roads are easy to make wider, for e.g. Speed Champions cars, or to make highways. Overall versatility is good- looks good (in my opinion)The cons (or areas of improvement):- There are too little tiles included to build even a basic four long (plus zebra) section, so you'd have to get that from pick a brick or BrickLink or the like.- Picking up built sections is difficult, because they will easily come apart- It is not possible to build the standard/intended road width with the gray tiles aligned on the sides, while simulateously connecting the road sections to the surroundings. There should have been a way to snap plates onto the underside (without raising the sections) that may then stick out of the road sections.- It is not possible to vary much on the markings in the middle (such as creating a continuous line).- It would be nice to have orange round tiles for the traffic lights as well.- And last but not least: There is not (yet) anything to build curved sections. On another note:It would be good to just sell the old baseplates alongside this system for those that already have a large layout on baseplates. One way to make the old baseplates compatible with this is to just lay regular plates under the baseplates, so that the total height will equal two plates (four units).Generally, I'm happy with the system, but imho improvement is necessary to make it a success in the long run, and I hope that cheaper road part packs will become available in due time.

After weeks of anticipation, and looking forward to a new georgeous-looking, customizable road set, these have let me down in just about every way. They look great on the surface, but are not near as practical for the price, stinginess of extra pieces, and play capabilities. My biggest upset is how the speed bumps are so big, most of the lego cars in existance, and even those in the sets coming out with these road plates, will not drive smoothly over them and even keep the cars from moving at all. Either the speed bumps will get scuffed up or the cars will. It is a real imagination-breaker for lego fans of all ages. Also, these sets are not near as customizable as I had desired. The small gray pieces needed at the edges are way too limited, and force you to have to use the road signs and striped pieces, even if you don't want to. If you don't intend to have street lights, signs, and poles every few inches, you will be disappointed with the number of customizable pieces. For the price, these is another huge let down. The train tracks were more deserving of the money than these. And lastly, be warned that the street lights in this set do not match the street lights as years previous. The trees and signs and flowera are all same, but the color pieces for these lights will be smooth, instead of the classical pieces we have all been using before. It just looks weird since I am used to previous ones. The only good thing I can make note of with these tracks us how the street lights actually do glow in dark, although not bright enough. Nonetheless, it is cool feature that will impress kids when they turn out lights after building.

I want to start by saying that these plates are not a direct replacement for the retired road plates, with that said, these have mountains of potential and I think should be approached with an open/creative mind. If you have a stack of normal road plates you are happy using, these probably aren’t for you, but if you are just getting started or like customizing the roadway, these are a great pick.I don’t have massive real estate for a huge city layout but I have room for an avenue. So with these I’ll be able to reduce the width of my side streets and include an extra modular. It also allows one to elevate the road should they want to create a scene underneath the city. The best thing about these is customization and configurability. So with these I’ll be able to reduce the width of my side streets and include an extra modular. It also allows one to elevate the road should they want to create a scene underneath the city. The best thing about these is customization and configurability. The ability to choose where a walkway is, and a speed bump or even a manhole cover offers tons of possibilities! My biggest criticism of this system is that curves are not currently available, but that’s not a deal breaker for my city. A very minor nitpick I have is that I wish these included a couple extra 2x4 dark grey tiles to connect with other road sets. As it stands, you can push the two sloped ends of a road together and create a dip, but a smooth and locked transition would be nice as an option for expansion. Those two things aside, I can’t wait to get more of these.

The New LEGO Road System
1 March 2022

This is the new LEGO CITY road system, and some of the new CITY kits also include this system. Instead of a single base plate with a road printed on it, here you have a selection of parts to build your own customisable roads and car parks. Extra features include trees, flowers and road signs.Cons: These are not quite compatible with the LEGO CREATOR modular building series (height differences); there are no curvy roads at this time; costs almost twice as much for almost half as much (the old system came with two plates per pack, the new system works out to one plate, plus the extras).Pros: get a few of these and you won't lack for trees and signs. Highly customisable road system. Requires assembly. Looks great in the CITY system especially.
