A good train set, 8.5/10

Overall, this is a good set, and a good build. It is my first Lego train. The build is very straightforward and offers little challenge, especially as it is broken into 7 bags. This is okay, as it is not meant to be challenging, it is designed to be able to be built by 6 year olds. The aesthetic of the train is fantastic, I think it looks great, the colours work well, and it is nice to see a change from the white and red we've seen in the passenger trains for a while now. The interior is slightly disappointing as there are only 4 seats for passengers, and the buffet car feels a bit empty. However, I like to think of it as a luxury train, with spacious areas for passengers, and the highest level of comfort. However, I like to think of it as a luxury train, with spacious areas for passengers, and the highest level of comfort. And you can't really fit in many more seats as it is, without loosing the aisle and tables. So for what is realistic, I think it does fine.More track pieces, as always, would not go astray, but I suppose to keep the price vaguely realistic we can't have too many pieces. Having said that, it is $200 (AUD) for 600 something pieces; that's almost the same price as a 2000+ piece creator expert modular building. The power functions and tracks obviously cost more than your average brick, but I still think that the price is a bit much for what is meant to be the basic train set.The new power functions are really great, I have heard several complaints that it is hard to use, but I found it quite the opposite. It is really straight forward and intuitive to use, there are five possible channels to use on each controller, and you can have two motors running on each channel through the two ports. So that means you can run two trains with one controller, and 10 trains all at once. And you can use a smart-device to run the train(s) if you wish, with sound effects. One downside to the power functions is that the motor battery isn't very efficient, it runs down quite quickly.Overall, it is a good set, not great value for money, but worth it I think. Now we just need a proper train station!

This is a really nice lego set, with a lot of parts for the money (compared to the 10-15 quid boxes) and the remote control is a lovely feature. what isnt so great is the batteries, you need 6 for the train and 4 for the remote, and for that you get about 10-20 mins run time. it isnt easy/quick to turn off and although there is an auto power off after 2 hours of none use, given how long the batteries last a simple on/off switch would have been better. If like most people you do have a charger it will probably do 4 at a time which means very long intervals of play. the other thing is that to take the batteries out of the train itself requires dismantling it in part (no big issue, it is lego after all, although the screws are an unnecessary fiddle) but when i can buy ... MoreThis is a really nice lego set, with a lot of parts for the money (compared to the 10-15 quid boxes) and the remote control is a lovely feature. what isnt so great is the batteries, you need 6 for the train and 4 for the remote, and for that you get about 10-20 mins run time. it isnt easy/quick to turn off and although there is an auto power off after 2 hours of none use, given how long the batteries last a simple on/off switch would have been better. If like most people you do have a charger it will probably do 4 at a time which means very long intervals of play. the other thing is that to take the batteries out of the train itself requires dismantling it in part (no big issue, it is lego after all, although the screws are an unnecessary fiddle) but when i can buy a £5 bike light that is usb rechargeable, that is a feature that really should be integrated into an item which costs over £100. especially as this could be done as part of the set by making a docking/charging station as part of the tracks.syncing the remote and train was simple enough, but i havent managed to get it to work via phone/tablet, i can see both items on the phone, but not control either. it isnt really required for my son to play with it but would be nice to use. i can see how these modules will sync and be useful for other lego items so it isnt bad really.

I mean, seriously, how can you go wrong with a LEGO train that functions and operates?- The train itself looks great... the dark blue coloring with yellow really pops and is a significant improvement over the previous passenger train.- The new train system has two different options for operation... you can operate the train with the remote that comes with the set, or you can download the 'Powered Up' app by LEGO for free to control the train via your mobile device. When you download the app and operate the train via your phone/device, you get a series of sounds that you can use via your phone's speakers while operating the train. The process of downloading the app and connecting the train via bluetooth to your phone/device was fairly easy and didn't take much time.- The new 'Powered Up' app leaves a lot of growth potential for the future and I can only imagine what LEGO comes up with for increased playability and functionality in the future.A few areas of consideration:- The cost for a set this size is a touch high in my opinion... there are lots of larger LEGO pieces and train functions which command a higher price, but the amount of track you receive and the overall piece count are on the lower end.- The detail on the inside of the train (in all three sections) is rather limited and underwhelming. Sure, if more would have been included, the price may have gone even higher, but be forewarned, there's not a lot happening on the inside.- The amount of track gives you a basic circle... once again, I know it would probably increase the price, but more track would have been a nice touch.- The new bluetooth system for controlling the train is much different than previous systems for train operation. If you are accustomed to using the previous system, you'll find the new system much different and thus far, I would say more cumbersome and less user-friendly. The remote control feature takes a few seconds to actually connect to the train before use. Batteries... you'll need 10 AAA batteries to get this train going (better start stocking up on batteries now).- The 'Powered Up' app seems to work well, but I'm somewhat disappointed in how quickly it loses the connection if you stop using the train for a few minutes. I'm also concerned that the speed of the train seems to function differently from the app on your phone/device than it does via the remote control. This may be something I'm doing incorrectly on my end, but there seems to be something off. The sound functions that are available via the app are a great addition and without a doubt increase the level of fun and playability with this set. I can only hope there will be added features in the future as LEGO expands the possibilities via the Powered Up app.- The small train station is really underwhelming and adds a small amount of additional playability.Overall, I like this set, but I'm still on the fence with exactly how much I like this set. It's good, but it's not amazing. Now, perhaps after more use I will come around and my enthusiasm toward the set will increase, but right now, I have a slight hesitation and skepticism.Would I make this purchase again... yes, however, I'd probably look for a reduced price and I would measure my excitement if I'm familiar with the previous LEGO train systems. If this is your first LEGO train set, then I have no doubt you'll be pleased and excited.Hopefully you found this review helpful. If so, please let me know below. If you have any questions, don't hesitate. Also, be sure to check out my other LEGO reviews.Happy bricking!

Fun Christmas gift for my train crazy 7 y/o son!
1 January 2020

Our son LOVES trains, and we bought him a high speed LEGO passenger train for his birthday last year, but he's autistic and has no patience for assembly or for when pieces fall off or it derails from the tracks (which it did quite a bit when he would run it too fast). In a fit of frustration he threw it against a wall, it shattered and lots of pieces were lost. He really wanted another one for Christmas, so I bought this one and pre-assembled it with super glue, gluing each piece down as I built it. He was super stoked on Christmas morning to have a fully assembled train, ready to run and play with! It works great! For some reason this one derails a LOT less than the last one. Maybe they've put a better speed governor on the remote so it can handle turns at top ... MoreOur son LOVES trains, and we bought him a high speed LEGO passenger train for his birthday last year, but he's autistic and has no patience for assembly or for when pieces fall off or it derails from the tracks (which it did quite a bit when he would run it too fast). Maybe they've put a better speed governor on the remote so it can handle turns at top speed. I don't know but I'm thrilled. The remote paired with the train very easily and there are lots of cute and fun details that my son loves, especially in the dining car. He really likes to use the LEGO play app on his iPad to control it because it opens up all sorts of additional features like sounds. That being said, pairing the train with the app can be finicky. We could only get it to work by taking the remote it comes with out of range. There is no way to switch off the remote so you can use the app. You'd have to unscrew the back and take the batteries out. If there is a better/easier way to pair the train with the app so you can control it that way, there were absolutely no instructions on how to do it included. Otherwise the app is very intuitive and simple to use. All in all we really love this train! It works great, has lots of great detail, wasn't too difficult to put together and runs reliably and well. We love that it came with both the remote and app access unlike some other LEGO trains that you can only control with the app. He's a happy boy! And yes I paid full price for this train.

This is a sleek looking site and definitely more attractive than the prior year's models. I have the high speed train version of 2015 and 2017 as well.Unfortunately this just sits and collects dust because I have not connected the remotes to the 2019 trains through whatever process is needed.I can't tell if I have an issue on my end or yours now.I don't remember what controllers go to what set. I have the high speed train version of 2015 and 2017 as well.Unfortunately this just sits and collects dust because I have not connected the remotes to the 2019 trains through whatever process is needed.I can't tell if I have an issue on my end or yours now.I don't remember what controllers go to what set. This is completely unnecessary. Why can't the controls that come with the trains just control the trains? This adds more probable consequences than benefits... what are the benefits exactly?Do I control the Train that has a remote much more reliable than my phones touch screen... why not VIP points perhaps of some type? I am looking online for other retired sets.I just purchased the Lone Ranger Set. And am going to purchase the parts needed from the HIGHLY SUGGESTED LEGO TRAINS BOOK (HAS INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO BUILD OFFICIAL LEGO ENGINES AND CARS NEVER MANUFACTURED FOR SALE.

Lego 60197 Passenger Train

I would say this is a decent to nice set. It i s pretty durable. You get just enough track for an oval. The train looks nice but to me it appears too short and the flat rear train looks like something is missing. It is fun if you invest more money into a train station, more track, switching tracks, Lightailing lights to light up the 3 cars and the flashing red and green light. You also need 6+4 AAA batteries for the motor and Bluetooth remote. You need a decent amount of space and extra track to design a more interesting track. The train has nice power with 10 speeds forward and reverse in remote. Had trouble connecting train to iPhone app for PowerUp, but I will keep trying. The app offers sound effects through your device and controls to operate the train. Watch YouTube videos for help with paring and how you can operate up to 4 trains with one remote. I added a second train and the motor has no issues pulling it around. Just make sure your track has wide curves to handle the turns with a 6 car train. Try to find a new one on sale, $100-$130 and its a good deal. I recommend the passenger train, and if you like it you may end up wanting to build a Lego city inside the track area

Lego's 2018 Passenger Train
15 January 2019

I am the nut-job parent that you'll see in some of the other train reviews. I grew up with Lego and returned to it when I had kids. I am terribly partial to Lego (ignore my star rating), but I'll give you the best review I can so that you can make the best decision for your kids.Set 60197 came out in mid-2018 and if Lego follows its longtime pattern, we can expect this train to be available until 2021. It replaces 60051 and, importantly, uses a new motor/battery system that incorporates the Bluetooth standard. For this reason, I recommend that parents focus on this and set 60198 so that you avoid any issues with compatibility or potentially discontinued parts (e.g. replacement motors). My quick review is that I very much like this set and can easily recommend it. For this reason, I recommend that parents focus on this and set 60198 so that you avoid any issues with compatibility or potentially discontinued parts (e.g. replacement motors). My quick review is that I very much like this set and can easily recommend it. I do think that the cargo train (60198) offers more play opportunities, but this is a sharp train that kids will enjoy. Everything you need is in the box except for 10 AAA batteries. Actually, you should probably stock up on a lot of AAA batteries, perhaps a value pack. The train does eat batteries. I also recommend buying a pack or two of points (switches, set #60238) and more track (set #60205). It gets boring watching the train go around in an oval, which is all the track you get out of the box. If and when Lego sells a rechargeable battery box, I recommend buying it if the price is not too astronomical. The Bluetooth controller works well, as does the smartphone app (which is not required). As for my longer review... aside from styling changes, Lego has made two big changes in this next generation of City passenger train. First is the switch to the "Powered Up" smart hub (i.e., the Bluetooth enabled battery pack). Compared to the previous generation of motors, this one has the advantage of dispensing with a discrete receiver. The old receiver was infrared, so you needed to have line of sight to the train. Bluetooth provides greater range and there's more data capabilities between the controller and the smart hub. When I paired the app with the train, the app updated the firmware on the smart hub. My kids and I like the new system. We had no trouble pairing it. I would have liked to see more than 10 discrete speed levels for the motor, but it is an improvement over the old one. I am also hoping for a rechargeable smart hub, or at least a replacement battery portion (so that we are not paying for another hub). Second, the train dispenses with the double ended carriage design of past City trains and goes with a single engine and two passenger cars. This is what Lego did for the Horizon Express (10233) which was a beautiful Creator Expert level train. I'm okay with this arrangement though I think everyone agrees that the train looks incomplete. Some people are going to go and buy two of the sets just to have a full trainset.Styling-wise, Lego chose to keep the one piece plastic nose. This one is not as aero looking as the prior train, though it does have a lifting windscreen so that you can easily place the conductor. The engine is very nicely designed with great studs-not-on-top (snot) grillwork built right on to the side of the smart-hub box. Not having the infrared receiver from the earlier generation really frees up space inside the engine, too. Unfortunately, access to the smart hub does require deconstructing/reconstructing the engine every time you need to replace the batteries. This is going to drive some kids/parents nuts. As a cost cutting move, Lego now makes you pay extra for engine lights (part #80005); these will fit in the new smart hub and can be operated via the controller or app. The passenger cars include a dining car (with two side tables and cafe, complete with food) and a spartan coach car with four chairs. The tops lift off of the passenger cars for play access. The smartphone app is, thankfully, not necessary for running the train. There are quite a few parents who are tired of loaning their smart phones to their kids so that they can access toys. However, the app does add support for train and station sounds; if you have a bluetooth speaker, it is nice to port the sound from your phone to the track area. Interestingly, the "Power Up" app has slower throttle settings than the regular controller. These slower settings actually make the train operate more realistically. I am hoping that Lego builds in more functionality into the app, with, for example, the ability to pair with two motors for trains that require more hauling power. The set includes an oval of track (16 curves and 4 straights). As I said above, I think you need to add more track to take full advantage of the set's playability. There is a small passenger platform and trackside signal. Lego did a bit of cost saving on this set and removed the level crossing from the prior generation (boo!). As for mini-figures, there is a male train conductor, a female cafe worker in an apron, a woman traveler with a suitcase, and a boy with a shoulder bag. There is a printed brick d

Looks nice, but drains batteries in about 1 hour

Got this for my 5 year old son who adores lego and trains.Pros:1. Nice looking train.2. Not too hard to build (son did most of it himself, following the instructions).Cons:1. Battery pack drains out 8 batteries in about 1 hour or less. Had a really unhappy 5 year old once that happened. Replaced batteries 2x but about 1 hour is all you get. I have now read or heard this complaint numerous times elsewhere and hope LEGO fixes the issue. I recommend reinstating the old system, or leave it up to the customer by leaving out the power system and dropping the price accordingly, then bringing the old power functions system out of retirement.2. Also have to hold both buttons down (though not simultaneously) to turn it off. Alternatively you can pair with your mobile device, but again, if it's a child playing, they likely don't have their own mobile device.3. Only 3 cars. For the price you pay, would hope to get at least one more. Or at least make the station a little more substantial.4. Not a lot of track provided. Again, given the price, would hope for more.

Mixed feelings

I have been a big fan of LEGO trains since my first set (171) in 1974. I have every generation of train from 1966 right through to this new train which arrived today.Good points:Up to LEGO's usual standard of detail and build complexity. Nice use of colours and overall a rather good train and an excellent addition to my collection. The usual selection of Minifigs and accessories and nice details like the signal and the small 'halt' - you can't really describe it as a 'platform'. Comparable to the 7938 City Passenger Train in terms of style, build and what you get in the box. Essentially a 'revised' version of a fairly similar train. The oval of track (complete circle plus 8 straights) is the usual minimum for a 'complete' train set to get you going and, fortunately, the track is the same as the older Power Functions track so if you have other sets, you can simply expand your layouts with ease.Bad points:Very few, really. I'm slightly concerned that for what is essentially a similar train set to the 7938 in terms of concept and content is much more expensive (>50%) that its predecessor. Certainly not a 'pocket money' toy. I appreciate that it has a whole new control system (using Bluetooth and 'Powered Up!' instead of the earlier infra-red Power Functions) which means that for those who use tablets or smartphones (I don't!) then an app is available, but the incompatibility with the previous trains means means having to juggle multiple controllers in order to control your entire collection. I have invested heavily in Power Functions, over the last six years, motorising both my Maersk Train and Horizon Express as well as retro-fitting many of my earlier trains with Power Functions.Perhaps Powered Up! will have future options that enhance the functionality of the trains? I eagerly await some lights (as the original Power Functions units are not compatible) as the cab of the engine appears to have provision for retrofitting headlights. Just controlling a single train motor as it stands right now limits the possibilities somewhat.Bearing in mind I have no intention to go down the 'smart device route' and will be exclusively using the supplied remote, I find that the controller is very hard to use. The much smaller size of the unit and the small speed +/- buttons rather than the rotary wheels of the Power Functions controller might be great for smaller children, but as a middle-aged man with hands like a bunch of bananas, I find the new controller very un-ergonomic and far too small for my liking. In summary, a perfectly good train, but I have major reservations about the control system. I suspect I will 'downgrade' it to PF to keep it compatible with my existing collection and make it easier for me to operate. I am sure there are those who will embrace Bluetooth and will possibly want to go the other way and retrofit older trains with this newer system, so I will be interested to see what sort of price point LEGO will pitch a new Smart Hub and PU Train Motor. I suspect it will be more expensive to convert older trains to the new standard than it is to buy the Power Functions kit to convert this train back to infra-red. I await developments (and lights!) with interest.

Nice intro to mechanisation, so much potential

I bought this set for my 6+ year old son - he'd been wanting it for some time.He was fine assembling the parts together to build each carriage and the locomotive, provided I kept and eye on him - picking up the odd missed part. (best not to have any other distractions in the background)The trouble started trying to get the remote control to authenticate with the hub controller, located in the locomotive, that runs the motor assembly. Given there is next to no written explanation in the provided assembly guides / instructions on what the various LED light colours mean (there are multiple colours to confuse you) on the Hub, it took more than 20 mins to get the remote controller to authenticate e.g. green LED on both the controller and the hub controller (Hub ... MoreI bought this set for my 6+ year old son - he'd been wanting it for some time.He was fine assembling the parts together to build each carriage and the locomotive, provided I kept and eye on him - picking up the odd missed part. Given there is next to no written explanation in the provided assembly guides / instructions on what the various LED light colours mean (there are multiple colours to confuse you) on the Hub, it took more than 20 mins to get the remote controller to authenticate e.g. green LED on both the controller and the hub controller (Hub 88009).The motor unit is quite powerful, so much so, when going at full speed, the train derails itself spectacularly!!There is no sleep (automatic power down mode) so the Hub controller will drain a new set of AAA batteries doing nothing in a day if you don't shut it off - you won't find these instructions in the supplied documentation - tried Lego forums.)The real headache started when trying to authenticate the Apple IOS (iPAD) Powered Up App. App installed fine, but the user interface is seriously lacking - it becomes apparent from playing with the App that Lego don't get software and really need help writing a better user interface. (perhaps they got a 3rd party to write this one?)We tried multiple times to authenticate the Hub controller to the iPAD App, each time the App wanted to download new firmware to the Hub - that's OK, but being a slow Bluetooth connection it take 10-20 minutes (Patients is a virtue here). On three occasions the iPAD Powered Up App crashed during the download process, first at 88%, the second at 15% and the 3rd at 76%. After rebooting the iPAD it worked a 4th time - taking approximately 18 mins. Wow - way slow! Wasted over an hour!!(Be prepared for the App to crash and leave your train running - with no way to control it - the supplied remote controller needs to be re-authenticated - else grab the train and hold down the button for the Hub controller until shuts off.)When using the Apple IOS iPAD Powered Up App; selecting the 60197 soft button you get into the control buttons for the train set. Of which 3 are useful. The Rest seem to control future functions that don't exist (yet) - really disappointing as there looks to be some really fun features.Living in New Zealand the local retailers tend to be clueless on most of the Lego product range, let alone questions about why things don't work or where can I buy the other enhancements for the train set. Your only lifeline here are the various Lego forums. (Lego documentation is largely silent on the various functions on the 'green' Hub button let alone things you can buy to add extra fun.)There is a lot of potential here, Lego just doesn't seem to recognise the potential value - yet.But please fix a few things, 1st - the hub needs a simple power off button. 2nd it needs to go to sleep (power down) if it hasn't been used for more than 15 mins. AAA batteries aren't cheap!! And that Hub loves batteries like no tomorrow.3rd, Where are the instructions on how to use and operate the 88009 Powered UP Hub?4th, the Apple IOS Powered Up App needs a better user interface design, run faster and stability testing against common in-use Apple IOS releases5th, Please thoroughly test your software (SW) and firmware (FW) - it's buggy - Writing great SW/FW isn't like designing and injection molding a plastic brick!!(Cautionary note - keep other Bluetooth devices away from the Hub and remote controller - things go a bit awry when they all get close together.)Last note, the build quality, look and feel of Lego blocks and the Lego system is second to none (just the SW needs some investment.)
