What a great job LEGO has done with this redesign. The mark of a great set is accuracy to the actual ships, detail, and use of various building techniques. This one hit all of the points, and then some. Compared to older sets, the 75218 variant is much more sturdy in it’s construction. Additionally, much of the details added since the last version are right on. The back part of the fuselage has some great details added that bring it closer to what you would see on the actual X-wing.It was a great build, with a lot of different techniques used to obtain the graceful angles and slopes needed. The mechanism used to deploy the wings into attack position is new, and more effective in my opinion. The cockpit and canopy looks amazing together.Overall, a great buy. The X-Wing is my favourite Star Wars ship. I saw this set in a store on display and was surprised how much larger it was than what I imagined, (I never owned a single LEGO X-Wing prior to this). So I couldn't resist but to pick this up, also given the fact that I missed out on the 2012 version. Now on to the ship: The fuselage is very sleek, has a very clean look compared to past versions. The canopy windshield piece has a nice print and shows the pilot sitting in it very clearly. The biggest step up however, in my opinion, is the engine design. Finally, the engines are large enough in proportion to its size. The wings on this new version actually closes fully when in landed position. For the most part, the ship looks perfect. Now as for why there's an "ish" in the title... The cons: the laser cannons are very, very short (about 6.5cm or 2.5 inches too short). The rear engines too are a little short, 1cm or 0.4 inches. This probably isn't an issue for most people, unless you pay a lot of attention to detail like myself. The minifigures included are two pilots and two droids. The pilots both have brand new helmet molding, they look fantastic with an actual visor built into the helmet. However, I think the lack of chinstrap on the pilot's face makes it look unnatural. The figure legs could also use some black on the lower half to represent black boots worn by rebel pilots, sadly there aren't any. I presume it was done intentionally so it could be reused in Hoth scenes..? For the droids: R2-D2 is pretty basic, comes in many different sets. R2-Q2 is the grey and silver droid, very nicely done, one of the perks of this set. Most of the cons I mentioned are just nitpicks, it is a very good set overall. I totally recommend this to anyone. I also recommend getting this along with the 75211 TIE Fighter (I got both together), since they match up perfectly.

I'm more of a Star Trek fan but I also like Star Wars so when I saw this kit of the classic X-wing starfighter I thought time to get one.In terms of build there is nothing especially complicated. The bags are numbered (good) but I found the instructions are not great - they are a bit dark and at each build stage the new parts are (unusually) not highlighted so at first glance it can be difficult to see where some go. The wing opening and closing mechanism is simple and effective although I agree that the slot the lever operates in on top of the fuselage is (slightly) disfiguring as are the gaps where the hinges are but to be honest they're really not noticeable to a casual observer. It works well however and my elastic bands have survived the past few weeks (but ... MoreI'm more of a Star Trek fan but I also like Star Wars so when I saw this kit of the classic X-wing starfighter I thought time to get one.In terms of build there is nothing especially complicated. It works well however and my elastic bands have survived the past few weeks (but it's for display not play in my case). Also mine has very very little "wing droop" in landing configuration but were it a real vehicle (sorry folks, real X-wings do not exist!) then it is likely this would be accurate - it is in many (real) aircraft.Overall this X-wing looks good, the canopy in particular gives a nice view of the pilot. My only (small) criticism of this kit is that the parts-per-pound count is not as good as some other recent kits. I think a nice touch would be to have included a stand so it may be displayed in the wings-open flying configuration but overall I consider it a good buy. Only drawback is that now I have to get a TIE fighter to balance things up :-)

It seems like an eternity since 2012 when the last traditional X-Wing starfighter was released. Now we have a new one! At first glance this ship almost seems like a downgrade, having abandoned the same engine and cockpit pieces that were used for generation after generation of X-wings. However, I believe the change was worth it. The ship is a good size, not oversized but still well scaled to the TIE fighter released earlier this year. The figures are very good, with new helmet molds that look giant but I think will pay off once we get used to them. Biggs Darklighter hasn't appeared in forever, so it's great to get a new version of him, although I do feel like they could have done more with his alternate face printing, being that his story didn't have a happy ... MoreIt seems like an eternity since 2012 when the last traditional X-Wing starfighter was released. R2-Q2 was a surprise inclusion, since the last time we saw him in 2011 he was an Imperial droid. Anyway, I do prefer the original version, because this one looks a bit odd with gun-metal-gray legs but not torso...a little odd.Anyway, the ship is fantastic. The cockpit is very cramped, giving just enough room for a pilot and pistol to fit in. The droid is very snug, despite sitting on one 1x2 jumper plate only. The function to move the wings into attack formation works great, although I do think I'll take off the "deactivator" on the bottom, which is a Technic piece that automatically releases the wings back into flight mode. The guns are pretty good, although I wouldn't mind them being a tad longer. The stud shooters as proton torpedoes are a bit disappointing, and I'd rather just have the telescope and cherry pieces again, like the 2012 version. The unique color scheme making it look old and run down is fantastic, really making this look like a Rebellion vehicle. The engines are great, although the engines weren't as pink as they were red in the movies - but I do admit that red cones on the back don't look as good as the pink ones do. The engines are very large, but I think they're justified - maybe they just look that way after seeing the sleeker Resistance X-wings for so long.Overall, I'm super glad I got this set and it is totally worth the $80 price tag - be sure to pick this up for yourself!
Its been over 30 years since I had Lego for my birthday, and this is not just Lego, it's Star Wars Lego :)Open the box and you'll find 6 big bags, one for each stage of the build, and a huge manual clearly showing every small step of this completely absorbing activity.Step 1: make sure you have a big table or area for building on - some of the small pieces can roll very easily.Step 2: you may want to extend the experience, like I did, so take a break between each stage and appreciate the work that has gone into the design. For me, the opening wing mechanism in particular was very impressive. It switches from attack mode to normal with a slide of the control, and stays fixed in either position.Step 3: admire your construction. This is a good model, the detailing is getting better with each subsequent release. But as the parts increase--so does the price. In my opinion, a less detailed ship with more extras would be much better. The "new" gearing system for the wings is only a semi improvement, as those pain-in-the-neck rubber bands are still in use; remember that you can use regular rubber bands--they work just as well, just make sure they are thick enough. The original x wing (along with the Poe Dameron model) came with a technician cart and a ladder (and a mechanic as well). This one comes with two minifigures and two droids. And Biggs' droid is boring grey. Why not an orange, yellow or blue droid with a transparent dome? As Lego has proved, you don't necessarily have to be movie accurate. I just think grey is boring--there's too much grey in the Star Wars sets. This is very sparse for a model that is $80.00! I would have rather seen a model that is less complex with extras and more figures--perhaps even a small stand to display the model.I have the original X-wing and where I can say that this 2018 version has really great detail, it really is no better than the original one. And in many ways it's not as good, despite the much higher price tag.
This set, 75218, is my first classic LEGO X-Wing, as I didn't get the X-Wings before this except for Poe's X-Wing, which was different from this.First, let's get started on the mini figures:Luke Skywalker: I'm actually a fan of the new helmet design, I really like it. With that being said, the mini figure was awesome, with the classic torso piece and Luke's face with the new helmet, I especially like the detailed markings on top.Biggs Dark lighter: Again, the helmet mold has different markings on it compared to Luke's helmet. He has a nice mustache and is a very good figure.R2-D2: Not much to say, same as the other R2s being released as of now, with the classic astro mech build with R2's markings.R2-Q2: Same as R2, but with grey markings. And now, the ... MoreThis set, 75218, is my first classic LEGO X-Wing, as I didn't get the X-Wings before this except for Poe's X-Wing, which was different from this.First, let's get started on the mini figures:Luke Skywalker: I'm actually a fan of the new helmet design, I really like it. The start of the X-Wing was also fun, creating the nose.Play features:Set contains 2 small spring loaded stud shooters on the sides of the cockpit area, and four spring loaded shooters near the blaster cannons on the tip of the wings.Using a sort of lever, you can pull the lever forwards to open the S-foils.Using a pin on the bottom, you can close it without pulling the lever back again, although you could pull it back with the lever as well.R2 can fit in horizontally, unlike the 2012 set.You can retract the landing gear and extend it as well. You can open the cockpit and put Luke or Biggs inside. You can swap out markings for Red Five (Luke) and for Red Three (Biggs).Set is very very easy to swoosh around and easily gripped and very sturdy to fly around the room. And that's all I can think of for the moment. Now on to...Aesthetics:For sure, the best looking X-Wing set yet, besides perhaps the UCS X-Wing. The best part of the aesthetics is the front of the engines, it uses something new rather than the pieces used in the 2012 set and before. The nose looks really cool, back of the engines look cool, the only bad looking thing is that the laser cannons are a bit short compared to the detailed 2012 X-Wing cannons. Spring loaded shooters can look off, so if you don't play with your set and instead display them, it is easy to take out the spring loaded shooter brick and fiddle around with the pieces already available, no need for spares. Also another bad looking thing is the pin on the bottom, though that isn't essential and can be easily removed. Also, the top with the lever looks weird sometimes, and I don't mind it, but some people might.Pros:Very swooshable, minifigures are very good.Build is very engaging.Arguably the best looking normal sized X-Wing yet.Front of engines are a huge improvement.Lever piece is very fun to use.Cons:Cannons can be short.Lever might be considered not good looking.Pin on the bottom looks off.The back of the X-Wing doesn't have fixed pieces, so the hexagon pieces might be slightly loose.Spring loaded shooters don't look too great.Back of engines fall off easily.Overall, I think even though the cons are more than the pros, the pros way way outweigh the cons in being more important.Besides, about ALL of the cons above can easily be fixed, especially the first few.Overall, one of my favorite sets, certainly my favorite display set that I have. I fully recommend this set to anyone who is going for the medium price of 50-100 dollars. Those who don't have an X-Wing, this is a very good set and if you want an X-Wing and don't have one, I really recommend this set. If you have enough money, the Solo TIE Fighter is a good set to pair this up with.So overall, amazing set, super cool, probably my favorite set to fly around in and to display.Probably one of the best Summer 2018 sets, along with the AT Hauler according to some reviews.
Soooooooooooo many X-Wing models to choose from. Naturally that gives the latest model a lot to be compared with. This version has a lot going for it.PROS: First off, I like the two version builds we get in this set. It really is nice to get an updated Biggs as well since he is long overdue. The new Droid is also welcome and I was surprised that it was in fact a new print not a reissue from the Imperial V-Wing. There is a new wing mechanic in this model as well that has changed how the S-Foils expand. It uses a switch rather than a knob on the back. As such it blends more pleasingly into the look of the model and works quite well. The model also has some rare color elements in it and of course the newer canopy design which I really love. While The price per part ratio is not great this is a nice example of LEGO upping the game. This version has 25-30 more parts than the previous 2 iterations of the X-Wing and the price point is unchanged.CONS: Stickers...not just stickers, stickers on round parts. I have just built the sets and already they are peeling. I normally deduct on my reviews for stickers but these are particularly bad. The adhesive on these (I bought two of this set and it isn't a fluke for one set its present on both) stickers is bad...even the stickers on the flat parts are having issues adhering. additionally I prefer the older method of using tiles to denote the Red Number on the wings...the tiles allowed for even more variation. This version using stickers locks you into either Red 5 or Red 3. Lastly I am not a huge fan of the wing design...they are bulky and thicker than previous versions. They look good but they are just heavy enough that the rubber bands have a hard time keeping them closed in use. Finally, the spacing is just tight enough that with only minimal use the rubber bands have already snapped after mere days. The older X-Wing models have all gone years and still have the initial rubber bands that work fine after years of use.SO-SO: Not sure even now if I like the new Rebel Pilot Helmets...they now have an attached visor which is accurate...but the shape and proportions are very awkward looking. The old method of having the pilot heads painted with the visors allowed some variation in having the visor up or down as well. It isn't a deal breaker but I don't know how much I like it. Price wise this set is also in the middle ground. It is better than the last 2 versions but isn't exactly a bargain. That said it also doesn't feel like a rip off either.Overall I like the set. The rubber band issues have been a problem but LEGO is always great about their service and provided replacements in a very timely manner. If I had my choice I would like the canopy and wing mechanic of this model with the wing and rubber band design of the older republic X-Wing. If only there was a way to get the best of both worlds...like if I could take parts from one and combine them...ah well wishful thinking. :P
Love this ship! It is sleek, smooth and clearly looks updated in comparison to the 2012 version. The astromech compartment with the correct orientation is excellent. So good to see my droids sitting in there properly. It is also really nice to see this thing looking smoother without so many studs showing. The new canopy piece is also a nice touch. Makes me feel like I have truly updated X-wing Fighter. I also like the new color scheme. Looks cool! The minfigures are really good and I dig that new helmet. Big thumbs-up on that piece. Great to have Bigg's and his droid. I like the grey looking astromechs. There are a few issues but nothing that can't be easily corrected if you have the right parts. I like the grey looking astromechs. There are a few issues but nothing that can't be easily corrected if you have the right parts. But, I have to admit that I'm stunned they are even present in the first place considering all of the advanced parts and building techniques available these days.First, the gaping slot for the wing mechanism. Goodness, that is horrendous. Really takes away from the overall appearance. It was the first thing I 'fixed'. Not to mention that horrible rod sticking out of the bottom that releases the wings. I removed all I could and just built a piece that sits in the hole covering the wing lever. I can still open and close the wings easily and it looks a ton better.Next, is the landing gear. Or, rather the lack thereof. Seriously, gives us true landing gear and not these built on parts we see so often on the ships. I used the landing gear from a few other ships I had laying around( a total of six pieces), moved its location further out on the wings making it look perfectly accurate. It even matches the front landing gear pieces. The ship also sits much better with this configuration and the wings don't droop like they do with the original design.Which, is another thing. Why in the world would you make an X-wing with such droopy wings. The whole mechanism is 'flexible' and looks terrible when sitting on your shelf without some type of fix. The 2012 version didn't have any of this type of thing going on.Anyway, it's still a great version and I think it looks great in comparison to the older ship. The overall updates are excellent minus the few things I mentioned. A great addition to my rebellion forces!
To start off, I purchased this set for $50.98 (shipping included!) from eBay--what a steal!!! I am aware that this is not the going price, which is $79.99. Value. The value of this set is decent; four spring-loaded shooters, two stud shooters (the ion cannons), a cool new wing opening function, Luke's best friend, Biggs Darklighter (and Luke, or course), nice detail, and R2-D2/R2-Q2 sits in the proper position--the past X-Wings had them sideways. So points for movie accuracy. The set's overall value is a solid 4 out of 5. I would have liked to see at least the ladder Luke uses to get into the cockpit and a lighsaber/blaster storage compartment, this would have bumped it up to a 5. Price. The price is too high for my taste. The ship, apart from a slight issue with how the hind engine pieces attach, is solid and very detailed, but the price just really stinks. I give it a 3 out of 5 on price. If Lego would have included a ladder (or maintenance cart) and on-ship weapons storage, it would have made it up to perhaps a 5. If you are wanting an original X-Wing or just want to build your starship fleet, then get it! It is a great set and a ton of fun. But try to find it on sale. Thanks for reading!
