I love Lego’s attention to detail. This is a really beautiful set that will put the heart of a child back into any adult.I like the direction lego is going with the app. Its very dynamic and it adds more of a sense of realism. However, the model itself is sometimes really slow even on top gear it lacks pulling power and speed. I think the app needs to have a recalibrate button, it may have one but i didnt see it and had to delete and re-download the app. I sometimes think that the firmware engineers and the software engineers are on 2 different planets and they need to be in one big studio together so everyone can see what the others are working on.This model is a really challenging build, not for kids or people new to lego. It requires a strong level of focus and a keen eye for detail. If you mess up one little detail the whole kit will not work. For example i got to the calibration phase and the hydraulic lift for the bucket fell apart. Turns out i miss interpreted the assembly to the gear box. I needed needle nose pliers to get the pins out. Thankfully i was able to fix it and move on without completely disassembling. Given the complexity and fastening of each gear section to the total gear box it can be tricky to tell if everything snapped together. Multiple points snapping means multiple chances of messing something up. I dont think the images in the instructions are enough. I think there needs to be periodic points in the instructions that point to components and ask you to move them to make sure everything is in line and working. But even then a video showing the more tricky aspects of assembly would be very helpful.Stickers are fun for small static models but this is something that people want to take outside and drive around. We all know that lego stickers over time pucker and peel away. I recommend just printing directly onto the pieces themselves. The assembly of the engine block and the cab was hard because as you are connecting pieces you are popping pieces off so it becomes a delicate process of push and pull which can cause mis-alignment. I can easily see people either out of frustration or by accident possibly breaking pieces on this kitOver all this is a really rigid build. Im not at all concerned about it falling apart. Even though I would recommend this kit there are strings attached to that recommendation. I definitely think the model could be designed to go faster. It looks great set up on a desk or a shelf, definitely a conversation piece. I need an rc loader to build now.

I still can't believe the price point on this set, for the amount of bricks and the motors, the steering servo.... its a crazy cheap set, the bang for buck here is really sharp and I will probably buy a couple more of these sets so that I can build a couple more and run them around the house with the kids. The build was fantastic, I had just finished the Land Rover and was very upset about it, I mean swear off LEGO upset about that awful build, but this Volvo set is Redemption! The steering servo gave me a little trouble at first, not gonna lie, I was a little bummed out for a minute there, but I contacted LEGO support and the sent me a new one. Just like that. I was able to change it out pretty easily from the bottom of the front build and it works flawlessly now. The controls and sound on the phone app are top notch and I have driven this thing all over the house. You can load stuff in the back and dump it out like a teddy bear or a bunch of ping pong balls, those are fun. It drives fast enough to not be boring but no so fast as you want but then it's a huge dump truck not a race car. Oh and the transmission works 3 speed forward and reverse, I can't say enough how solid the build is, if the Land Rover had had this chassis and transmission It would be heaven.

The box is huge! So is the final product. If you plan to keep it assembled, make sure you have space. It comes with a hefty book of instructions which could be intimidating if you’ve never done a big build like this before but they are the usual step by step instructions and are pretty clear throughout. This was a very fun and challenging build. My kids aged 6 to 11 were able to help with some of the smaller elements along the way too. It is built in four stages and each took a few hours so having a dedicated build space is useful. Throughout the build, I marvelled at the attention to detail from the designers and that it featured things like all wheel drive, slip diff, and a working gearbox with 3 forward and reverse gears. I have bought this model right before its official release, which means that I could not play with it untill official profile was released (There was a time when you could play with your motorized set right after the build, Power Functions, remember?)Model name, The Volvo articulated hauler, shows that it is NOT a particular model from Volvo heavy machinery line.Adding "A60H" markings will not change that.Whole model lacks proportions of A60H, especially the cab area, which should be much bulkier and cab itself should be lowered. There is a photo in the instructions showing the real A60H nexy to this model. LEGO used forced perspective to make this model look more like its real counterpart. You need to use your smartphone with that "cool" app to control this model. It takes up to 3 minutes to calibrate at first use and does not work properly with model after calibrating, especially with the steering. Sometimes it does not change the gears, even when particular gear is selected.Central pivot point has so many slack in it, due to usage of small turntable, that whole front part of the hauler goes up and down. The servomotor used fot steering, along with linkages with pins without frinction adds even more slack to the whole mechanism. Basically whole front part with should be rebuilt to avoid the slack and improve steering lock.Dump bed has few holes and places where small parts like 1x1 brick can be stuck.Only thing that looks good is fake engine with its surroundings and that "your average Volvo hauler" look.Great set for parts, good for display, poor for playing.Sincerely, your customer.
Overall I enjoyed building this model, but play value, especially with younger children is low as there’s a bud design flaw. The cab section keeps pulling apart at the articulated joint if you don’t pick this up properly and it’s a pain to get it back together due to having to thread an axel and engage a small gear in an awkward location. I had to do this three times already. The model isn’t durable. I tried to look repeatedly if I missed some step to reinforce the connection but I followed the instructions exactly. I think it is possible to improve this joint connection at the expense of not allowing the cab to swivel so I might dig out some spare parts and try to mod it. As is every time you pick it up there’s a risk to the cab separating.
I absolutely love the top-level Technic sets that get released each year. While it strains my wallet, I eagerly order each flagship set shortly after it's released.Like many epic Technic sets before it, set #42114 doesn't disappoint. One of my favorite parts about this set- and the last few flagship Technic sets- is the fact that when you are building the model- especially at the beginning- you often don't know exactly which functions you are building as you follow the instructions. The designers may use the same parts each time, but they continually find new and innovative ways to utilize those parts to increase the range of what these models can do- and that's part of the fun of building these larger sets.Secondly, I really appreciate that Lego continues to ... The designers may use the same parts each time, but they continually find new and innovative ways to utilize those parts to increase the range of what these models can do- and that's part of the fun of building these larger sets.Secondly, I really appreciate that Lego continues to design these flagship models that, in a way, sort-of compliment each other. As a result, after years of collecting, I now have a complete construction set. My #42009 Mobile Crane goes well with my #42030 Volvo Loader... which goes well with my #42110 Liebherr R9800, which goes well with this Volvo Hauler #42114.I'm not a big fan of forcing Lego fans to use their cell phones as remote controls though- but that seems to be the trend lately. While it certainly adds functionality to the finished product, one of my favorite things about building these epic Legos is that it gets my son and I off of our electronics. I'd much prefer an old-fashioned physical remote control. That said, there's only so much you can do with those remote controls- and things like the automatic transmission function on this Volvo only is possible with a cell phone/app.In terms of finished design, I'd say Lego got a lot right here... the overall shape and scale is pretty good to the actual real-life truck. The angles on the front end are especially impressive. My only two complaints in terms of design are the cabin and headlights. The cabin is very sparse. it would have been nice to at least include a sticker for the instrument panel, for example. I also wish they would have worked out a better design for the headlights- which on the real truck don't point so much to the side as the Lego model's does.In terms of the motorized functions- the steering works very well, as does the raising and lowering of the cargo area. The automatic transmission works okay, but not great. Sometimes it works fine, at other times it seems to make some unpleasant noises while shifting through the gears. That seems to only happen in automatic mode- not when you use the app on your phone to lock it in 1st or 2nd gear.Overall, I think Lego did a great job with this model. While it's price tag is high, you have to remember that you're getting a hub and three motors- which usually cost quite a lot if you buy them separately from Lego. Well done Lego... well done.
As of writing this review, I have 10 large Lego sets including the Bugatti and the UCS Falcon. Ever since this set was announced, I knew I wanted it! I mean at the end of the day who doesn't like big heavy construction machines. While I do like the end result, I have to say there is room for improvements and below is a list of my biggest complaints:- The instructions, for some reason a few of the images showing part placement also showed other parts that were not going to be built until a few or several steps after where the image is. This is quite confusing as I have not encountered this in any of my other Lego sets and I would advise Lego to review the instruction manual for this set to possibly make changes.- Some of the design choices, so one of my ... This is quite confusing as I have not encountered this in any of my other Lego sets and I would advise Lego to review the instruction manual for this set to possibly make changes.- Some of the design choices, so one of my announces is with the engine bay. Now I will be honest I have not seen the engine bay of a A60H but considering the engine area of my Crane and Bugatti, the engine in the Volvo seems lack lustre and quite pathetic compared to the others I mentioned. Then there is the motors and the cable routing, so Lego actually has cable tidy pieces for the rear two motors which allows you to have neat cable runs to the control box but the front one doesn't and even in the instructions it just shows you plugging the front motor in despite there being a really long cable that you have to somehow tuck behind the drivers seat.- Carrying on with the design side of things, I would have loved to have seen some of the attention to detail that was on the Crane carried over to the Volvo. Both sets cost the same when they were new, the Volvo in my opinion is lacking exterior panel pieces to hide some of the raw internals of the set and also there is no real detail to the cabin, where in the crane there is.Overall I do like this set and it was still fun to build, it is Lego at the end of the day! However, compared to other sets around this price like the Crane; I feel this is lacking and I would've liked to see more in this set.
I bought this item because I like the Technic & Creator series. What appealed to me about this set was the size, amount of pieces and the CONTROL function. Building took four days which I enjoyed. When the truck was complete I noticed that due to the motors you can't play with the truck without the CONTROL app as the wheels won't move and the bucket can't be lifted by hand. I downloaded the app onto my phone to try the remote control function. Using the app was confusing at first but eventually I figured it out.Unfortunately some buttons don't function properly. The buttons for the bucket to lift up and go down didn't work. While the truck will drive forwards and backwards in 1st and 2nd gear, when switching to 3rd the truck would stop and raise the bucket. Only by repeating would the bucket go down.I decided to take it apart piece by piece to rebuild to see if that would fix the problem by double checking the instructions. It was exactly the same. How much you will enjoy this item depends on what interests you. If you enjoy large sets with lots of pieces and displaying them afterwards you will enjoy it. If you like to play with them after building you will be disappointed as without the app the truck is a paperweight. If you like remote-controlled vehicles be aware some things work and some don't.I mostly enjoy building and displaying my sets therefore I can recommend this item for those with similar interests. But I wish LEGO had spent some more time working out the bugs on this set before releasing.
I ordered the set 11/30/22 and it arrived 12/12/22. I started building it around 1pm Monday and ended at the number 3 bags around 5. I then went ahead and continued and finished bags #4 Tuesday morning. When I tested it with control+ and when I tried to raise the bucket it went in reverse. I removed the bucket and looked at the gearbox. It wasn’t shifting to the spot it was supposed to raise the bucket. I called Lego customer support and the lovely assistant tried a few things to troubleshoot with me. We eventually figured out that I forgot three gears. I added those and recalibrated the set. It then worked well. There was a grinding sound though when I used this function. I removed both linear actuators and the sound was coming from one of them. It worked sort of. ... I enjoy playing witht the model and the details that went into it. Props to the designer who thought of this amazing and fascinating gearbox and the way to build the bucket. If I got a working linear actuator I would have given this 5 stars. Still my new favourite Lego set.
After having to go through and rebuild this for my son, thinking he'd made grave mistakes or missed parts of the instructions it appeared that he'd actually followed the instructions down to the smallest detail. However it's a completely unpractical 'toy' build and relatively unusable. This is mainly due to the fact that the front cab section regularly comes away from the rest of the body. Placing any load into the tipper forces the lifters to come away from the body with every lift. Can't believe that for this price, lego have allowed this set to be sold. I can't believe that I will have to re-engineer this set to stop it from falling apart. Love lego but this set is such a let-down.
